Template Design
These are two discussions had about design. We need to come up with a final decision and prototypes for the look of new templates. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 18:43, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
Fixing Old Templates
I will say again that making the Citizen template modular to include some of the Bio ideas is the best thing we can do. But we still need to think about many other generic templates that we are using. For instance the region, country, newspaper templates; they are out of date are not all formatted in the same way. I think we should update these templates. Let's get some ideas together on what we should change. Here are some of my suggestions:
- Change the background
- Make the top headings larger and have links so that we don't need integration
- Get rid of some of the horizontal lines
- Get rid of the pieces that V1 does not have like number of soldiers/average strength

- I'm curious to see what everyone else thinks of MiniBill's proposed color scheme here. Personally, I don't like the purple, but I do favor the light-blue-on-white.
- How much larger do you think they should be? I didn't think there was really a problem with this, but I'd like to see how much bigger you'd like it
- I haven't really seen them used more than twice, can you show an example?
- Average strength is still available, but what I've heard is that Admin wants to keep some aspects of the templates for historical purposes. It might be possible to mark these sections as "historical" or something, though, but it depends on what is being marked.

- Personally, I don't like headers at all, but that doesn't seem to be the case with most other people so I guess I'll just have to bite my tongue on that and go with whatever everyone else likes.
- The top headings should be as large as they are on Template:Biography (font-size:150%).
- I think that the only place you need a horizontal line is between the top heading and the picture: London - they're just everywhere
- I was talking about the average strength on the region template
- That is a good idea. I can't imagine what we would keep historical: give some examples.

- What if I were able to implement this functionality into the template?
- I thought I actually nabbed this one a while back. Good catch.
- {{Region}} seems to be a prime example of what needs to be changed, since it has both a normal-sized top heading and poor composition.
- Ah, you're right, that definitely should be removed. I recall Admin wanting to keep Mayors in there somewhere.
- - –Dr. AgentChieftain
“PPP!” B / C / D / F / P / S 09:34, 29 January 2009 (PST)
- I like headings, but they weren't really "carefully chosen", I just put them a bit ago, so they're ready to be changed
- I'm ok with that
- Agreed on that
- Agreed too, if Admin will reintroduce them we will also :)

Template style
As you may or may not know, AgentChieftain has been busy working on User:AgentChieftain/Sandbox/Template:Citizen.
Now the question is whether you think we should adopt the new border style and colour scheme, as shown in his template, or should we stick to the ol' grey boxes of yore?--~✭βƓЪὢ✭~ 13:31, 8 February 2009 (PST)

Speaking of style, Martin23230 has an interesting concept at the bottom his sandbox: separate color schemes. Although I might want to adjust his choices a bit, I'm in favor of having different boxes in different colors to make them easier to distinguish. The alternative to this would be to keep the "rounded blue scheme" for every template in this manner. What do you all think? - –Dr. AgentChieftain

- I have to say, I like what Martin has done. +1, square or rounded corners I really don't care. I care more about color, readability, and ease of use for the person using the template. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 18:30, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

New Flag Template
Yeah, I'm in love with making templates. This one I think will be very useful though. It integrates the aspects of all of the current flag/icon templates into one. It is fully customizable except for the size which I will get to a little later. So, tell me what you think. --
Mr. Awesome | Talk | 11:35, 31 January 2009 (PST)

- But it isn't exactly user friendly... the {CountryLink| and {{SmFlag templates were very easy to use, very little to remember except for one small prefix before the name of the country. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 08:52, 1 February 2009 (PST)
Collapsible tables
Collapsible tables are (finally) implemented properly in the Wiki. Here is a template that uses it and see it here at work. Have fun with it! --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 14:40, 31 January 2009 (PST)
- So, within all of that new markup, which table properties are needed to implement this in templates like {{Region}}, {{Citizen}}, and {{Country}}? From what I can tell, it's a special class of table, but there are a few things I'm unfamiliar with concerning how it works.
- Also, can I safely assume that this template is what made the TOC collapsible long before we even implemented that Javascript from ED? - –Dr. AgentChieftain
“PPP!” B / C / D / F / P / S 16:30, 31 January 2009 (PST)
- Long story short - here is how it's used: Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Collapsible tables. I have no idea what ED means, but yes! And the last idea - Wikipedia automatically uses .js pages from MediaWiki - example: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Common.js. If we want that our Wiki to use them we have to add them manually, like here. --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 16:49, 31 January 2009 (PST)
- So, looks like the big idea is just to add class=collapsible --Mini "Template boy" Bill

Final tweaks and introduction
I (not a coder) always had problems with trying to change/export a complex template. Importing the current Template:Citizen into another Wiki and making changes so that I used only parts from it took me 5+ excruciating hours of trying to understand what is where or where is what. Therefore, I wish (if you have time and energy) to also introduce comments for people like me (non-coders) to better understand how the template is structured. Thanks! --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 14:32, 1 February 2009 (PST)
- Well, basically the template header is a thing I haven't touched (although I'm going to do that), other things are just using {{Row}}, and {{Header}}, what's wrong? --Mini "Template boy" Bill
have a biscuit 05:55, 2 February 2009 (PST)
In these cases (when you have already received feedback in long-going Bar Discussion) wait 1 or 2 days to see if anyone has any final ideas (I see that BGBW already has a question for you) and then introduce it without a voting. I think that only Template:Citizen will require a voting because there are 3 contributors who work on different versions and it is a possibility that they will not reach a strong consensus in certain aspects of the template. --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 14:32, 1 February 2009 (PST)
Region,Biography Templates and Congress
Seeing as AgentChieftain and MiniBill have such great plans for the Biography template and how little I understand the collapse capabilities, I have handed the torch to them and trust them to finish the job. BGBW has some great plans for the Region template, and with the newly found collapse feature, I trust his work will provide us with a well-made template. Everyone, feel free to COPY my work if you wish to your sandbox. Please do not edit my sandbox directly. You never know if I just might work on them in the future.
On the other hand, I have begun work on a Congress template. It is used to create uniform tables of Congressmen. I am looking into creating a kind of faux-network for updating the pages or something along those lines. --
Mr. Awesome | Talk | 17:07, 3 February 2009 (PST)
- Why do we need templates for congress? What is wrong with just creating a wiki table? --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 19:46, 3 February 2009 (PST)
- My plan is to create a system of inputting congressmen each month all in the same way and all connected together on a well organized web. Then connections can be made to each country's congressmen page that would filter for regional and party congressmen to be placed on the different pages. This will make inputting and looking up congress members incredibly easy and unified under one system. Maybe a better explanation can be made by just looking at Template:Congress Table and Template:Congress. The Congressmen Table will be put on a new page for every Congress of every country. Then Pages will branch from them which show only congressmen from a specific party or region. Template:Congress will be put on region and party pages to embed those the congressmen tables directly on them. --

- Also, something I've discovered about the new collapsing tables: Set the title to "align=right" to center it. Yes, it's stupid, but that's how you have to do it, otherwise the alignment is pushed to the left. - –Dr. AgentChieftain
“PPP!” B / C / D / F / P / S 13:42, 7 February 2009 (PST)
I think it would be better to have a collapsible heading rather than table. The list of countries and possibly the list of dates need to look better. What are your ideas? --
