Long term plan for the Wiki = Retirement

Retirement

Dear contributors,

It is time for me leave the "mop" aside. I did my first edit on May 7, 2008, at 17:26. Today, 605 days, 8 hours, 30 minutes and 12 seconds later, I'm writing these thoughts as farewell; in the memory of those that are not active anymore, as teachings for those that still are, manuscript for the future.

Initially, I wanted to write a wall of text, but after 4+ hours and 6 pages written, I realized that I'm not leaving for good, thus it is not the time to write my memoirs. Here's a short list of ideas/emotions I have:

  1. Few people know that the same day (May 7) is the same day I joined the eRepublik team.
  2. Even fewer people know that since that beginning, I'm 99,99% the person behind the User:Admin account.
  3. Because of it, I always have the tendency to write like the King of All Cosmos "talks" in the Katamari games.
  4. I strongly believe that the Wiki evolved on its own.... in the end I consider myself only a guide.
  5. I had learned something new every day, from every one of you, from every challenge.
  6. Shared my knowledge and my vision with QJ; so you guys and ladies will be fine without me (the "Admin") constantly watching over you.
  7. The phrase "with great power comes great responsibility" is a cliché, but it is so true...

I will never be able to leave for good, I feel that I'm leaving a lot of unfinished tasks behind; my heart and soul will always be a part of this project. I think I should have "left" a few months ago, but i couldn't. Even if I "leave" in 6 months, a year, 10 years from now, there will always be "unfinished" tasks, things to do, things to improve; pages to be written, decisions to be made, lessons to be learned. I think that is why I felt so strongly connected with the Wiki community since my first day: it will never be finished and there will always be things can be done TOGETHER.

During this year (2010), I have set a to do list for me:

  • finish the long term plan for the Wiki (you can find them in the section below);
  • handle bureaucratic tasks (example: approve accounts once per week);
  • answer to any questions or give any advices needed (you can drop by anytime to leave a message on my talk page).

To sum up, I feel a bundle of emotions; but I look forward with hope and I wish all good luck!

With a tear in my eye,
Just Geo.

Login Integration

Extended version: to be able to login with your eRepublik citizen name and password, without the need of requesting a Wiki account. Good or bad idea? --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 00:37, 16 January 2009 (EET)

  • -1 Bad, unless you make it triggered by being a certain level in the game.--QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 00:38, 16 January 2009 (EET)
  • -1 Bad, you can register in a LITTLE time, on the wiki you need approval and that's GOOD, we're too little for "open" registration --Mini "Template boy" Bill have a biscuit 00:39, 16 January 2009 (EET)
  • -1 I also say bad. If the state of newspapers in eRepublik says anything, the general maturity level, language comprehension, and fairness of most players simply is not acceptable for wiki standards. I know that a wiki is supposed to be free to anyone who wants to edit it, but I would foresee massive amounts of reverts and clean-up edits by senior members because of inexperienced and malicious editors. Having a small number of editors, and introducing a few new ones at a time, helps keep this potential at a minimum. I mean, look how much people have to clean up after me, and I'm trying to HELP! --Geno Garon 00:45, 16 January 2009 (EET)
  • -1 Very very very very very bad idea. I don't think every person should have wiki access. This needs to be a select group-- PrincessMedyPi 03:07, 25 January 2009 (PST).
  • +1 Good idea. As long as we increase the amount of sysops and encourage people to contribute well, then there should not be a problem. Also, this should be activated when citizens reach Level 10 after the ability to start a newspaper.
"If the state of newspapers in eRepublik says anything, the general maturity level, language comprehension, and fairness of most players simply is not acceptable for wiki standards."
Wikis, in design, are eternally imperfect projects that constantly improve. Wikipedia is an obvious case in point.
The main difference between eRepublik's media and the eRepublik wiki is that Wiki articles don't fall under eRepublik's freedom of speech, and there is always constantly active content control. Also, keep in mind that along with the flood of "bad apples", there will be a flood of "good apples" that will contribute and help us moderate the "bad apples". - –Dr. AgentChieftain Flag of the Crescent and Star PPP! Okay, how about:

  • no banned citizens;
  • no dead citizens;
  • only if your level is higher than "X"?

What number do you think X should be? --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 12:04, 28 January 2009 (PST)

Better, imho X should be ~=10 --Mini "Template boy" Bill have a biscuit 12:08, 28 January 2009 (PST)
What about people like Martin23230? He's new but contribute a whole set of flag balls for us? Also, just because someone has been on eRep longer doesn't mean they are more mature.--~✭βƓЪ✭~ 13:25, 28 January 2009 (PST)
I think that you should automatically login if youre > level X, have to "ask" otherwise --Mini "Template boy" Bill Italian in the deep core have a biscuit 13:29, 28 January 2009 (PST)

Internationalization

See this page: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wiki_family --Belea2008 20:09, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

IMHO we could start "spinning" off only "major" (in term of translated articles) languages, and keep minor ones inside the main wiki. Also, although the division may be useful it needs motivated people and, most important of all, I think every "new" wiki must have a mothertounge admin (that also means, btw, that before spinning off a language we should find a person with good enough wiki skill to act as admin). Existing admins could (maybe temporary) have their power expanded over the new wikis, but I think that finding mother-tongue admins is a must, even if in the beginning they are not very capable of being sysops they will learn (as every one of "us" has done). Also, if "new" admins are given power only over translated wikis, they can do less harm --Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 11:10, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
At this point, I don't see the wiki community strong enough to spin off yet. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 19:48, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Embedded Wiki

Just a random thought!

See the picture in the right to see what I mean. --Belea2008 20:09, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

IMPORTANT: If you prefer the old layout (with the sidebar with all the links in it) go to this page: http://wiki.erepublik.com/index.php/Special:Preferences - select "Skin", choose "MonoBook" and click "Save". --Belea2008 21:31, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
I would keep with the new one but, the layout doesn't work, the links and search are gone, this will be very confusing to any new citizens :( - Abedecian Flag-UK.jpg Talk to me and you get cake! 22:35, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
Layout changes finished (for now). Press CTRL + F5 if you wish the new CSS to load (also, you must have the "eRepublik" Skin selected in your preferences).
Any chances I make to any Wiki pages from now on will be based on this new layout...
Next step: I need feedback! At the first glance, the new layout is missing something very important: the SEARCH from the sidebar... thus, don't hesitate to come with suggestions or ideas on what is missing/needed. Also, I would appreciate if you point out where a missing feature (like the "search" I mentioned) would fit best in the new layout....
--Belea2008 23:10, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
In the meantime, the search function can be found manually by going to url and typing http://wiki.erepublik.com/index.php/Special:Search?search= followed by the search term, i.e. http://wiki.erepublik.com/index.php/Special:Search?search=Timeoin to search for my citizen page. --Icon-Australia.png Timeoin| Say G'Day 04:03, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
Search can be done also by directly visiting this special page: http://wiki.erepublik.com/index.php/Special:Search --Belea2008 08:25, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
Until the sidebar comes back, I'm using Monobook. --Icon-Poland.png Grzechooo (his discussion) 11:56, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
Missing search function is the smallest problem. In Opera it looks odd. I mean, the background is too small... Anyway, good look. --Icon-Poland.png Caroline au Marymont|Talk to me. 11:57, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
Agreed, its a good look - but ill be glad when people stop asking me where the search button has gone every day :D --Icon-Australia.png Timeoin| Say G'Day 02:17, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
Reverted to the "normal version" until I invest time to (at least) add the Search. The Wiki is useless without the Search. --Belea2008 19:40, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
If I was any good at coding, I would help, but im not, and I dont want to stuff things up :) --Icon-Australia.png Timeoin| Say G'Day 23:05, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

Bots

  • I require bots to help manage the wiki. I have asked MiniBill and other people with more technical skills but I only get empty promises.
  • I need a bot to automatically change links - specifically changing those with case changes

--QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 19:45, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

I (we) will install in a few days this extension: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:MassEditRegex --- Let me know which of the SysOps wish to have and maintain a Bot. --Belea2008 08:29, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
Installed. Try it and let me what you think: http://wiki.erepublik.com/index.php/Special:MassEditRegex --Belea2008 19:33, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
Would be cool. Doesnt work --Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 21:15, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
I've made some changes. Give it another try and let me know if it works. --Belea2008 00:19, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
The biggest problem is that I have to feed it with a small amount of pages, else it dies. No problem, I'm doing it --Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 13:28, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
What do you mean exactly? You lost me... --Belea2008 13:55, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

(uninded) Try this: replace {{{[Rr]ank\|(.*)}}} with $1 giving a as name prefix --Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 14:08, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

Done. No timeout. No complains about memory. See result here: http://wiki.erepublik.com/index.php/User:MiniBill/MassEditRegex_Result --- "If you get an error or a blank page when applying your edits, an error has probably occurred, most likely from trying to edit too many pages in one go. Until this is fixed, try splitting the edit into two or more smaller groups of pages." --Belea2008 17:01, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
It complained about ???nonexisting pages???. Lemme try with tha bot account --Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 17:06, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
The script often times out (after 30 seconds). Anyway, I'm gonna do it, full stop --Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 17:13, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
So, basically, it works; but with a "bot" account? --Belea2008 17:24, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
Nah, it just works with a normal one, but with the 30 seconds cap --Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 17:36, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

Content, Quality, Accuracy

When new items are released in the game, we need accurate information in the wiki online asap. This is where people go for more information. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 19:45, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Unless there is a bot to do this automatically, we need more people. --Icon-Australia.png Timeoin| Say G'Day to Timeoin 15:59, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

Templates

When will these ever get finished???????? --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 19:45, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Main Page Layout

Rethink the layout of the main page (or of the Wiki in general): http://www.wikihow.com/Main-Page --Belea2008 09:20, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Layout changes finished (for now). I'll work on this topic in the several weeks. Any suggestions or ideas are more than welcome! --Belea2008 23:14, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
I have one question, I do not know is this the correct place to ask it, but... Where is the menu which was to the left side of all pages? I am lost without it! :( --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 11:30, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
Andy, go to your preferences and select MonoBook as your skin. I did this because the new layout seemed to slow my computer down. I also liked to get the sidebar back. :) --Icon-Finland.png Kuhaa|sTalk to me! 12:26, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
Thank you darling, now I can organize my work much better! --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 15:13, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
