It ultimately became responsible for control and direction of several military branches including the Royal Navy and the Special Forces Support Group.

The Defence Staff was replaced by the General Staff in April 2010, following Version 2 (V2) reforms, but was subsequently revived in the January 2011 military reforms. It is currently just known as the Ministry of Defence.

From the re-establishment of the post until the October 2011 reforms streamlined the tri-service, the Chief of the Defence Staff had been appointed to the highest rank in the respective, or associated special Forces, branch of the British armed forces to which they belonged, holding the OF-10 rank of Admiral of the Fleet (RN), Field Marshal (ARMY) or Marshal of the Royal Air Force (RAF).

Since that time all CDS appointments have been awarded the rank of Field Marshal.Template:ERepublik:WikiProject United Kingdom/Military/Branches
