The Defence Staff was the first professional military command of the British Armed Forces being formed during Version 1 (V1). It ultimately became responsible for control and direction of several military branches including the Royal Navy and the Special Forces Support Group.

The Defence Staff was replaced by the General Staff in April 2010, following Version 2 (V2) reforms, but was subsequently revived in the January 2011 military reforms. It is currently just known as the Ministry of Defence.
