The Monarchy of the Philippines (constitutionally referred to as the King/Queen of the Royal Family of the Philippine Islands (English) or Lakan/Lakambini ng Kadatoan ng Mga Isla ng Pilipinas (Filipino), and is also commonly known as the ePhilippine Monarchy) is a constitutional institution, and a symbolic and ceremonial office of the Philippines. The monarchy comprises a reigning King or Queen of the Philippines, their family, and the royal household organization which supports and facilitates the monarch in the exercise of his royal duties and prerogatives. The monarchy is currently represented by King Al Raposas, rightful successor of Queen Kadayao, and the members of the Royal Houses of Luzon, Visayas, Palawan, and Mindanao.[1]

Origins

There were attempts in the history of the Philippines to establish a monarchy that will represent the entire country internationally. However, all of these attempts did not progress.

Though, there was one constituent regional monarchy in the past. It was called the Kingdom of Mindanao and Sulu which comprises the whole region of Mindanao. The establishment of the monarchy was led by Ariel David Buena and was ratified and put into effect by the Philippine Congress.[2] The monarchy was ruled by King Terence I and his adopted Princes and Princesses. The Kingdom also had its own royal guard called the Royal Pintados. The Kingdom only existed for more than 300 days and only had two ruling monarchs, the other was Prince Terence II. Soon, a civil war broke within the region, with the guerillas calling for the removal of the King and of the members of th royal family.[3] The aftermath of the civil war caused the establishment of a new autonomous entity called Autonomous Region of the People’s Mindanao, which replaced the monarchy with a civilian-led government.[4]

The monarchy

Reigning monarch

King Al Raposas is the reigning monarch as designated by the official line of succession, and was brought to the throne after the inability of the Queen to continue. He was crowned on October 21, 2016. He is the second monarch, and the first king, of the Philippines.

Responsibilities

The following will be the responsibilities of a monarch:

  1. The monarch will assume the title of King or Queen in English or Lakan or Lakambini in Filipino. And also, his or her House will be called the Reigning House.

  3. The Monarch is the overall decision-maker of the Monarchy. All decisions of the Monarchy will pass through the Monarch and the Monarch will have the final say.
Removal procedure

In case the monarch is removed, or abdicated the throne, he must first appoint a successor during or before leaving the throne, this successor can be replaced at any time by the Monarch. The successor must be a Duke or Duchess, or Grand Duke and Duchess of one of the Houses of the Royal Family. The successor will assume the title of Prince or Princess in English, or Rajah or Uray in Filipino.

Also, the successor has the power to replace the reigning monarch if the monarch decides to acquire replace his citizenship, abdicates, or has been inactive for 30 days.

If there is no successor, the new Monarch is chosen using the selection procedure.

A royal house consists of at least one, but usually more monarchs who are regionally related to one another. Monarchs who are not regionally related to one another are usually deemed to belong to different houses, and each house is designated by a regional name which distinguishes it from other houses. A royal house consists of a head, represented by a Grand Duke or Duchess. Though, most members of each of the royal houses are non-hereditary related, all are considered part of the entire monarchic family.

Once a person is bestowed royal position, through a recommendation by a royal house and approval by the reigning King or Queen, he is then assigned to a royal house. A rule has been established that once a monarch is accepted as a member of a royal house, he or she cannot transfer to the other royal houses.

Members of the royal houses are entitled to a vote during the election of a new reigning monarch, which is picked among all the Grand Dukes and Duchesses.

There are currently four monarchs leading four royal houses: Al Raposas retains his title as Grand Duke of Luzon since there is no qualified successor to the leadership of the house; Boy Pick Up, Grand Duke of Visayas.; Vincenzo Roque, Grand Duke of Palawan; and Prince Terence II, Grand Duke of Mindanao.

Qualification to monarchy

All RL Filipinos will automatically be part of the royal family, unless they decline, then they will be eligible for the title of Sir/Madam. Other than that, it’s the Monarch’s decision on whether people can join the royal family or not. Also, all members of the royal family will be required to join the FB groups ePilipinas and/or ePhilippines else they will be kicked out from the royal family.
