He has been the party president of Alleanza Democratica Italiana and of Partito Progressista Riformista.
In January 2009 he has been re-elected Party president of Partito Progressista Riformista.
He served one term as President of Italy and now he is the "oldest" member of the Italian Congress. He has been nominated Italian Economy Minister for 3 times since now.
