New circular flag images

Who has done the round flag images (like Icon-Italy.png Italy ) for the game? We need one for Chile (and the other future countries for that matter).--QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 18:03, 14 January 2009 (EET)

Seductiv uploaded them. --Mini "Template boy" Bill Italian in the deep core have a biscuit 18:51, 14 January 2009 (EET)
These balls are public and on the internet. --Aryamehr Flag of Iran talk 20:56, 14 January 2009 (EET)
Where can I find them? --Mini "Template boy" Bill Italian in the deep core have a biscuit 21:01, 14 January 2009 (EET)

They are made by [1] this guy I believe, `-kol. South American flags are here: [2]. Note the terms of use, I don't know if this wiki applies or not. Martin23230 22:50, 15 January 2009 (EET)

--Edit-- Here you go: 50 px Icon-Chile.png Chile
So it could be the case that we might have to make our own graphics.--~✭βƓЪ✭~ 23:06, 15 January 2009 (EET)
I can't reach that address... --Mini "Template boy" Bill Italian in the deep core have a biscuit 00:17, 16 January 2009 (EET)
Fixed the addresses - but they appear empty galleries to me. Also, read their terms of use. They are copyrighted, so basically we "have to make our own graphics" - anyone wants a give it a try? --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 00:22, 16 January 2009 (EET)
I could have a go this weekend. It'll be good practise.--~✭βƓЪ✭~ 00:35, 16 January 2009 (EET)
Wouldn't it be easier to create a page with all of the flag images on them (current ones) and give credit to the guy who created them? I heard If you don't take credit and if you're not profiting from it then it's legal to use however you wish under the fair use act or something... of course what I heard could be wrong considering I've never researched it myself.. Pierric Bross 05:42, 16 January 2009 (EET)
You can’t use these icons on personal website, software, prints, or any other place without permission from StudioTwentyEight. The icons must not be redistributed, sold or exchanged without written permission.

Unless someone asks for permission we are better off making our own. Like I said, I would mind whipping up a Photoshop template this weekend.--~✭βƓЪ✭~ 10:30, 16 January 2009 (EET)

[3] This seems to be free to use, and might help to speed up the construction of some new icons. There is already a pretty large collection on the same page, but I don’t know if we could use them.--Martin23230 19:44, 16 January 2009 (EET)
New icons.png
If I might enter my contribution, I whipped these up pretty quickly in Inkscape* (since my last comment), so it would not be too hard to do the rest. If a disclaimer is needed, these were all my own work and I am fine with anybody using them.
* by the way, I see .svg file uploads are disabled. Could they be allowed possibly? I am sure the benefits would be large; however I don't know how decisions like this are taken, perhaps a vote on it separately. Anyway, that is a different topic. What do you think of the icons?--Martin23230 20:05, 16 January 2009 (EET)
Fine, here you go:
New icons 2.png
I had some time to kill! All made by me using free images, and anyone can use them. I will wait for any reactions, as I assume most people in the US are asleep. Any comments for improvements would be most welcome, or ideas on integrating SVG files. --Martin23230 22:51, 16 January 2009 (EET)
They're very nice! Do you mind cropping them? - –Dr. AgentChieftain Flag of the Crescent and Star PPP! B / C / D / F / P / S 23:37, 16 January 2009 (EET)
Well darn, I just finished my template.--~✭βƓЪ✭~ 23:46, 16 January 2009 (EET)
Well I might as well give an example of my work so far:--~✭βƓЪ✭~ 01:14, 17 January 2009 (EET)

Very good. I will be gracious and say it is better than my first attempts, however I think if we could enable vector images (see below)then they would be very successful and probably better suited. Congratulations on yours however, I may have to go about matching mine to your high standards! Oh, and don't let the size fool you, mine are infinitely scalable! --Martin23230 12:46, 17 January 2009 (EET)

Here you are, version 2:

Fantastic! Just, the Pakistan, and Australia balls seem like "cutting" a piece of the flag, could you solve this? --Mini "Template boy" Bill Italian in the deep core have a biscuit 16:17, 17 January 2009 (EET)
Lookin' slick.--~✭βƓЪ✭~ 16:34, 17 January 2009 (EET)

I was thinking about the Australian "cutting", the reason being that either the edges could be cut off or it could be stretched like the current one. This might help: Australian icons.png

Either:

  • Keep the flag in proportion, centre sphere on it.
  • Stretch flag to square proportions.
  • Compromise, resize Stars and Union Flag to fit in the sphere.

I did option three, but any other ideas are welcome. See, this is harder than you think! --Martin23230 17:29, 17 January 2009 (EET)

I'd say use the bottom proportions, but shrink the stars even further and move them inwards. - –Dr. AgentChieftain Flag of the Crescent and Star PPP! B / C / D / F / P / S 09:53, 22 January 2009 (EET)

Here, I went ahead and made the adjustments myself to save you time:

Ausflag adjusted.png

If you put your "circle" template over this, everything should fit quite nicely. - –Dr. AgentChieftain Flag of the Crescent and Star PPP! B / C / D / F / P / S 01:45, 23 January 2009 (EET)

Some more, plus two different ones for Iran.

New icons 4.png

If these are OK I might start uploading them separately, the new design takes longer to make. Perhaps I should wait and see the outcome of the vote below. Thanks for the feedback! --Martin23230 17:40, 17 January 2009 (EET)

These look fantastic. I seriously doubt anyone disagrees, especially since you even included two choices for Iran. Marvelous work. - –Dr. AgentChieftain Flag of the Crescent and Star PPP! B / C / D / F / P / S 09:53, 22 January 2009 (EET)
Agreed +1 They're great. Pierric Bross 11:03, 22 January 2009 (EET)
+1'+1'+1 --Mini "Template boy" Bill Italian in the deep core have a biscuit 16:15, 22 January 2009 (EET)
+1 They are great. Please continue and start loading graphics. I can't wait to start using them! --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 16:20, 22 January 2009 (EET)

Typically, just as I was typing a comment to thank all of you, my PC crashed. I do have a separate data backup, however this reserve computer is much slower and I have other higher priorities to recover, no offence. Therefore they might be up by the weekend, also giving Admin enough time to enable the svg files. If they aren’t allowed by then I may upload them as .pngs as above, and then change later. Thanks for the support anyway, and I apologise for the delay!--Martin23230 21:45, 22 January 2009 (EET)

New icons final.png
OK, here are the final icons. Note all current countries, plus extra options for Mexico and Iran, and the next four (Malaysia, Singapore, Serbia and the Philippines) to be added, although I wouldn't be surprised if they were put on hold, the game as it is. Anyway, tomorrow I will begin uploading them as pngs, assuming Admin hasn't enabled svgs yet. If there are any more suggestions (see Austrailia above(thanks AgentChieftain!)) then it is not too late, comments are welcome! --Martin23230 14:44, 23 January 2009 (PST)
WOW, btw join #wiki @ irc.rizon.net --Mini "Template boy" Bill Italian in the deep core have a biscuit 14:46, 23 January 2009 (PST)
I'd edit Pakistan, moving the white moon a bit on the left, the Czesch whole flag a bit on the left to have colors more "balanced", the same for that top right --Mini "Template boy" Bill Italian in the deep core have a biscuit 14:51, 23 January 2009 (PST)

It is done, they are uploaded as .pngs. See [Category:New Icons] for them all. I edited the CountryLink template, however as they are used else ware (the language bar for example) they will have to be changed. Once this is done, I assume the old icons will be deleted, due to the licence issues above, which made me create these in the first place! Anyway, they are up, now do with them what you will. If svgs are allowed in the future I will re-upload them, but for now these are it. Thank you for all of your feedback! --Martin23230 09:16, 24 January 2009 (PST)

Replacing old images with new ones seems like a work for MiniBot, anyway {{LangMenu}} is using {{FlagBall}}, so no problem (changed my signature btw) --Mini "Template boy" Bill Italian in the deep core have a biscuit 11:51, 25 January 2009 (PST)
You have a bot? Great, all you need to do is change Image:Spain.jpg to Image:Icon-Spain.bmp etc... Also, nice idea to move Template:CountryLink2 to Template:FlagBall, may I suggest changing Template:CountryLink/CountryLinkNormal(any real difference?) to Template:FlagBallText, or something similar. Make a unified format or something. As for the cropped shadows, I am re-uploading them.--Martin23230 09:34, 26 January 2009 (PST)
CountryLink/CountryLinkNormal are going to be merged, and I guess we'll choose for the "normal" one --Mini "Template boy" Bill Italian in the deep core have a biscuit 10:11, 26 January 2009 (PST)
