NEW TO THE WIKI?

--QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 19:17, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

United Netherlands?

I have noticed a lot of pages popping up with the name United Netherlands. Was there an official name change? In the past, when a country absorbed another one, the wiki has ALWAYS gone by what the game says - that the country is called Netherlands and Belgium has been conquered. I am concerned that this might set a bad precedence where things in the wiki are called one thing and then something else in the game, eg, not good. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 03:48, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

There's no official name change (that would be bizarre, if you think about it). I agree - we should change it back. Litro 05:50, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
just ask the dutch president about this. The name will be changed in "United Netherlands". The Netherlands didn't "conquer" Belgium, we decided to merge. (I was the president of Belgium and retreated all regions in 20 minutes).
We should not change it back! User:Creveroeland 08:45 24 april (GMT)
...that is very nice, but eRepublik does not recognize friendly mergers (at the moment). It is not possible to change the name of a country to "United Country A and B". In game it remains country "B" (Belgium) conquered by country A (Netherlands). It is very difficult to decide which countries "merged" and which countries were "occupied". We should not refer to countries in Wiki different to what countries are called in-game in Erepublik. At the moment (in-game) Belgium is conquered by Netherlands.----Hrvat CroatiaUser_talk:Hrvat 08:35, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
So why was Switzerland allowed to be renamed "Theocratic Switzerland"?--Malta 1990 13:26, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
If I am not mistaken, this is because "Theocratic" as a pre-descriptive is describing the nation under a certain government. ie. Communist China is the same as just China, or the Theocracy of Iran is the same as just Iran, just an administrative shift. - Jewitt eUS de A/Awesometown Hatemail is appreciated! 21:21, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
There is already a precedence in the wiki for peaceful mergers. The Belgium-Netherlands merger is not the first in eRep. Moldavia merged with Romania (and was called Romania) and Belgium merged with the UK was called the United Kingdom. In the wiki, we use the names that are given IN THE GAME. IF we didn't have this standard, what would prevent someone from changing the name of Romania to "Belea2008's Sexy Vampire Kingdom"? As for "Theocratic Switzerland", I thought we agreed last month that information in the wiki would not be changed. If pages have been changed, I believe they have been changed in error. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 23:29, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
I didn't just redirect to the page about "united netherlands". Just go to "Belgium or "Netherlands". I think it's the best solution. --CreveRoeland (7:25 UTC)
If I might drop in my opinion... The way I see it, the country page should still be the Netherlands page, but it could still have the United Netherlands flag and a note that that is what it has been called since the union. This would be exactly the same as Switzerland. The flag and name should be changed, but the page must remain at Netherlands.
However, I think the United Netherlands should be similar in format to the Germany-Austria page. It would have information about the politics and the formation of the union, but not the infoboxes, geography, economy sections etc... that are in normal country pages.
--Martin23230 10:00, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
Martin23230 +1 - that is exactly the way this situation should be handled. And region pages should be handled in the way described above. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 19:38, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

So I logged on to the wiki this morning and what do I see? A new front page! It is BEAUTIFUL!!! Thanks to the Wiki Heroes that worked on it: Mr.Srachit, AgentChieftain and Belea2008. (If I missed someone, I am gravely sorry, let me know for your name to be added). The page is beautiful and I think will be helpful. COOKIES FOR ALL!!! --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 13:34, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Religion Policy

All, a draft of the religion policy can be found here:User:QJ Lincoln/Sandbox. Please provide feedback.--QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 17:50, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

It looks good to me. I'm trying, but I can't really think of any major rules for posting religions other than what you've already laid out:
  1. Any claims of numbers of followers will require sources.
  2. Religions must display some sort of relevance to the game.
Have the admins approved the policy yet? Can we include Lewdaism yet? --Emerick 18:44, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
You seem to have covered most important problems with 'religion pages in Wiki'. ----Hrvat CroatiaUser_talk:Hrvat 23:30, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
Once a policy is in place we can start the process for approving religions back into the wiki. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 12:30, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
Seems good to me, but I am not exactly religious ;). One thing though, doesn’t Churchism fall under the Religions cannot be blatantly similar to Real Life religions section? The parallels are quite obvious.--Martin23230 11:49, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
Churchism might have to be revised a bit or get special approval to be grandfathered1 in. I think and have said many times, that it is way too close to Roman Catholicism. I need to read it more carefully to see if there is anything offensive/sacrilegious. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 18:55, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
I have an order kind of thing, found here, and we don't consider it a religion. What would your stance on this be? Mouj 06:47, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
No matter what you call it, it seems to have the same trappings as a religion - scriptures, leaders, followers. It also, at this inception, seems to have very little to do with eRepublik with is the standard for ALL articles in the wiki. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 12:10, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Ukraine

With the help of some fellow Ukrainians, I'd like to undertake a near-total rework of Ukraine, not to alter content but to expand the nation's history and better reflect its current status. As this page seems not to have received serious attention in quite some time, it's pretty out of date and very incomplete. I've detailed the intended alterations on that article's talk page, but I have two questions to repeat for everyone here:
1) Does anyone have any concerns at all about such a rework?
2) Would anyone like to help?

Please let me know. Thanks! --Irov 16:29, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

Always great to see new contributors helping and building the history of this game. Even though it's a game that I no longer support nor hardly like that much and very disappointed at the staff, it's still amazing to see the history and such. Keep up the work! I can't help because I already have a ton of pages myself to do. --Aryamehr Flag of Iran talk 16:56, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
Irov, go nuts! The Ukraine was conquered by Romania by the time it got any mention in the wiki. So have fun building out the newly independent country's page. For ideas, I suggest you look at the other country pages to see what information should be included. Oh, and just ignore Aryamehr's bitterness. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 19:17, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! Ironically, Ukraine actually once again is NOT sovereign at the moment, but should be again by tomorrow, so I'm hoping to begin work ASAP. And if anyone has any historical information regarding the country's pre-Romanian period, I'd REALLY appreciate contributions. --Irov 20:54, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

New question. Despite my edits, Category:Regions of Romania won't disappear from pages whose regions are no longer part of Romania (Volhynia, for example). There aren't any references left to Romania anywhere in the templates as far as I can see, but maybe I'm missing something or not using the template properly. Can anyone help? --Irov Ukraine Talk to me! 03:08, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Dear Irov! I have double checked everything and there was a small error on template Regions of Ukraine. Author (guess who! :P) of that template put that the automatic category would be Regions of Romania. Now, I have fix this template so on each page that you put the template Regions of Ukraine the system will by default put Category:Regions of Ukraine. There is no need that you put additional Category:Regions of Ukraine on the end of region that belongs to Ukraine. For more sense, just checked my corrections that I have made to region: Volhynia. If there will be another problem, just write it here! --AndyCro Croatia Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 07:21, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks Andy! --Irov Ukraine Talk to me! 13:37, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Okay, something totally new. Once the craziness surrounding the page moves settles down, I'd like to try and jumpstart initial translation of some of the most important pages into Ukrainian. The problem is that I don't know what the best way to go about this is, especially where page hierarchy and linking are concerned. Is there a convenient resource that could teach me the parameters so I don't have to bother everyone all the time? --Irov Ukraine Talk to me! 21:17, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

Dear Irov. :)
My suggestion is: Go to the Main Page, choose something from the game concepts menu or the tree structure and translate. For instructions how to translate review Help:Translating_Pages. If you will still be puzzled how to proceed, I am always here. --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 21:29, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
Once again, many thanks. When do you sleep, man?!?! --Irov Ukraine Talk to me! 02:57, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Brazilian Content

Some of you may look at all the new stuff that is appearing in the wiki/Portugues Brasileiro and all the links that go no where and all the links to the English pages. Please have patiance we are first adding all the content we can. After that we will start organizing the content. Also some pages look very horible don´t worry no need to add tags. Not at this time at least we will make it look better after we have done organizing all the new pages.
Thanks for your understanding --Bunaly 17:01, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

We understand, but please use template Link. This L template is specially created for translated pages instead using classic marking Name of the link. Why to use it? If there is no translated page on your language for Link, it will automatically redirect to English version of article Link. If there exist translated article on your mother language, redirection will not happen. ;) --AndyCro Croatia If you have a suggestion... 17:33, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
Well this helps a lot, i did not see that in the help page. Thanks i will tell everybody to start using the new link. --Bunaly 00:28, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Bad news

As some of you have noticed there a script working: Special:Contributions/Conversion_script. It runs because there was a modification in the settings of the MediaWiki made by the team: now, all the Wiki pages are case sensitive - that means that "Bear" and "bear" are two different pages.

  1. The bad news: some links are broken for the moment.
  2. The good news: when it will finish, all the broken links will be fixed.
  3. Even more bad news: all the pages are renamed to have lowercases at the beginning. Even redirects.

What can we do? Just wait for it to finish... --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 14:37, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

The page names are the page titles so when this is finished all the page titles will be lower case? I don´t think that will look good. --Bunaly 14:42, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
JUCK! awful. --Mini "Template" Bill Italian in the deep core bother me! 14:55, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

I still don't see the advantages of doing this, only a lot of disadvantages. --Aryamehr Flag of Iran talk 18:55, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
Belea, I am going to buy q6 weapon and assassinate you. 50 % templates that I put now doesn't work because I used small letter instead large letter. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. You owe me a gallon of beer, cookies, milk and wiki money (you must invent it for me). But, as I like you (not as much as I like QJ) I will get to work and fix this case sensitive templates. Only for you. But tell me, ARE YOU FINISHED with this nonsense scripts? What the hell? This was stupid and it has made the entire wiki look like utter shit. Way to go. —Nicolae Carpathia | PEACE Global Community | Talk 20:45, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
Ugh, this is seriously awful. You're redirected to "main Page" instead of "Main Page", "aTLANTIS" instead of "ATLANTIS", "second Balkan War" instead of "Second Balkan War" .... what the fuck link issues does this fix? If you had a link to "second Balkan War" it would have already worked because of how the wiki software works. This is the stupidest change you possibly could have made to the wiki short of changing the background of every page to cornchug.jpg and looping awful industrial noise music. —Nicolae Carpathia | PEACE Global Community | Talk 21:01, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
I guess it's reasons like this new people don't want to get involved, for example me I don't care anymore because of sudden changes that messes up all the hard work. No thanks. This is awful, as others have said and messed up tons. Please tell me the advantages, so far you gave one advantage and two disadvantages which one was very bad. --Aryamehr Flag of Iran talk 21:40, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

do we have to manually change all "#REDIRECT" commands?
eg:

klick on a little black book does not take me to my 'Hrvat' Wiki page, which is now of course (hrvat) Wiki page :::::::::::----Hrvat CroatiaUser_talk:Hrvat 05:04, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
Let me know if there's any way I can help. Litro 03:41, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
The team will run the script again in a few hours - this time making all the pages from lowercases to uppercases (even redirects). Have patience, please! --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 08:28, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
Okay thanks, I'll stop manually redirecting then. :o Pierric Bross 08:57, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
After a careful analysis of the situation, we have decided not to run the script and we will use in all the pages that requires it. We will start deleting all the unnecessary redirects, including the ones posted in the discussion below. --Admin 10:30, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

V1 Wiki Integration

Examples:

A lot of help will be needed with these ones.... so any one can start creating links for these structures. --Belea2008 07:22, 29 September 2008 (PDT)

I don't like this at all! We already have categories for the exact same thing.. No thanks, I am not helping with that as it will just make the wiki look stupid. We can just keep it the way it is and make the categorization better.... and it seems like you are already busy with doing those changes. A big finger just shown to the others, could atleast talk with us since we are the main contributors of the wiki (we = the main contributors, you know who you are..) --Aryamehr Flag of Iran talk 07:26, 29 September 2008 (PDT)
It is not about categorization... it about integrating the Wiki into the site.... in all these pages, there will be a Wiki link (that will be used like http://wiki.eRepublik.com/index.php/Country_Japan - all these will be standard.) --Belea2008 07:29, 29 September 2008 (PDT)

Regions with the same name:

Make the Bot run.... it will probably mess these two pages (4 "regions").... and we will fix them manually after "he" is done.
And for pages with names containing non-latin characters, (if you cannot figure it out) "tell" the bot to just skip them and we will do them manually. --Belea2008 00:07, 30 September 2008 (PDT)

I'm sorry Admin, but this just makes it cumbersome for the wiki editors, especially ones who aren't quite "up to speed" when making links to citizens, countries, parties, ect. Honestly, I think that it would be best for everyone if you just changed the way that the links are provided in the game. -- Emerick 18:01, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
"We wish to eliminate completely the redirects created when a citizen clicks on a Wiki link in the eRepublik site. We have eliminated all the redirects that were related to countries."

Well you surely did fail on that, then a person will search after a nation, they will not write Country Malaysia, no, they will write Malaysia as thats what they are searching for! In fact sweat Admin, you have just created tons of new redirects. This is crazy house. My watchlist is completely filled with pages and I cannot organize myself at all to start working. Please ban everyone (including me) except experienced people (QJ, MiniBill...), or everyone except admins for a period of one or two days until you fix or install or whatever you have to do because everyone are trying to do something and they don't know what is happening (Images are messed up, Links are messed up, everything is messed up -). Of course, put some kind of explanation why are they banned and when wiki editing will be allowed again. --AndyCro Croatia Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 21:33, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

New Syops

I would like to introduce to the community three new syops. These users have been instrumental in the life of the wiki, specifically in creating templates, working with portals, aiding other users, and managing translations.

  • Agent Chieftain - One of the "oldest" contributors to the wiki. He is known for making great templates, helping other users, and being an active editor.
  • AndyCro - AndyCro has shown his skills as a community leader and guide in heading the wiki translation to Croatian. (and not because he said he liked me better than Belea)
  • Srachit - One of the newest Uber Editors, Srachit showed his wiki skills in creating the new Main Page Portal. He took this project on himself for the benefit of the entire community.

Congratulations guys!

I am really glad to have you all onboard. Lately, with MiniBill busy with RL, I have been the only active syops. It is on the brink of being unmanageable for just me. I have been working with the eRep staff to get this to happen for quite a while, so please do not think that it is because of the recent redirect issue. (Though your help would be appreciated when we figure out a plan of attack.) Congratulations once again.--QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 23:19, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Wiki edits

So, what's the big idea behind the wiki software edits they did? If I understood correctly, page names will be like "country_xxx" "citizen_xxx" but titles will appear correctly, as set in name parameter.

Is it that way round?

Then: I don't like it. . Are we supposed to have 99% of links being redirects? Cause most of the links are links to country/region/citizen/party pages. --Mini "Template" Bill Italian in the deep core bother me! 14:25, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

OK, redirects will be made for every old users, citizens, parties, regions... but every new citizen, party, region will not have to create redirects because he will start immediately from the new Citizen and User page (tutorials have to be changed also!). So, in a long run, this is a good idea. But for us all that are here, that is a great deal of redirects to create. --AndyCro Croatia Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 17:10, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Second thought

Why case-sensitive? --Mini "Template" Bill Italian in the deep core bother me! 14:25, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

I can appreciate implementing case sensitive into our wiki community, we will teach a lot of new editors how to create a good wiki links. But the thing that I don't understand here is WHY, OH WHY DID YOU RUN THE CONVERSION SCRIPT??? Converting page titles to lowercases? I still have nightmares when I see this conversion script. Unnecessary, confusing and this move destroyed 80 % of the links. Even for the people that were careful and that were case sensitive when creating wiki links, because you have CHANGED articles from, for example, Party President to party President. Completely not necessary. Case sensitive OK, script, NOT OK. That is my view. --AndyCro Croatia Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 17:10, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Third though

WHY THE FLUFF HAVEN'T YOU ASKED FOR THE COMMUNITY OPINION? I mean, even if you chose to do it anyway, we would have KNOWN it. --Mini "Template" Bill Italian in the deep core bother me! 14:25, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

I agree. I can't work for last three days because I don't know what is happening and when will it be over. I am lost. I try to work, but then I see broken links, redirects and a lot of edits and I stop. And I am still waiting that your job ends. When will it end? --AndyCro Croatia Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 17:10, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Fourth thought

Did you really tested it before making it live? --Mini "Template" Bill Italian in the deep core bother me! 14:25, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Again, I must agree with MiniBill. Did you test this? --AndyCro Croatia Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 17:10, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Just my 2 eurocents. ANGRY eurocents. --Mini "Template" Bill Italian in the deep core bother me! 14:25, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Great 2 eurocents, as always! :) --AndyCro Croatia Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 17:10, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Uncool Changes

I'm also going to reiterate one of my comments on v1 integration: I think that it would be best for everyone if you just changed the links that are provided in the game. --Emerick 14:49, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
Links on eRepublik can't be changed because you can prevent someone to call his Citizen: Joe and his Party: Joe. If you will "lose" the Party and Citizen in the wiki links on eRepublik this will lead to the same article on wiki. I hope that this sentences made sense to you. :( --AndyCro Croatia Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 17:10, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
I see what you mean, but come on. Names of people and names of parties and companies are p different. My name is Emerick, I'm a member of the Libertarian Party, and I work at a company called Q5 Weapons. Generally, party names will have the word "party," "union," or something equivalent at the end. Besides, even if two entities happen to have the same name, you can change the names of parties and companies, so why is this in issue? --Emerick 20:57, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
When MiniBill starts writing his thoughts, that is never a good thing. But I would like to add my comments to his thoughts and I have done it by adding a signature to his ideas above and my comment with signature below his thoughts. I hope that he doesn't mind.--AndyCro Croatia Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 17:10, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
Emerick is absolutely right.
The Linkifier (Does this script have a proper name?) should automatically detect names when used by different entities. If this script requires some sort of entity identifier, let it be detected through a template within the page (Possibly within the infoboxes) or some other form of anchor.
Let's use AndyCro's example and consider the citizen Joe and the organization Joe. On the wiki, "Joe" links to the citizen's page, and a page for the organization doesn't exist. Now imagine a player clicking on the book icon on the organization's page.
If the wiki page "Joe" contains Citizen, then the Linkifier should detect this template or an anchor contained within the page. So, if someone clicks the wiki link for the organization Joe, the Linkifier will detect that the entities (Organization on eRep and Citizen on the Wiki) are not the same, and thus directs them to Joe (Organization).
Forgive me if I'm confusing you; this concept isn't really easy to put into words (Especially when you have no information on how this thing works). - –Dr. AgentChieftain Flag of the Crescent and Star PPP! B / C / D / F / P / S 22:00, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

I deleted all the redirects. But we have a problem: if the team changes settings so that the first letter is capitalized, all the current pages with lowercases will be unusable. Therefore, all the pages in the Wiki MUST BE uppercased. What everybody can do:
  1. Move pages so that all the pages start with an uppercase.
  2. Write here (eRepublik:Bar/Deletion) all the pages that need to be deleted - one page title per line.
  3. Sysops can copy paste that Deletion list and mass delete all the pages that are not required.
When there are no more pages with lowercases, we can move on to step 2.
Also, a script will not be used for this job, because that will create a bazillion redirects (again). The best solution would be to use MiniBot to do all the moving, but I don't know if miniBill is available.
I will not be available all the next week. If you have anything urgent to say to me, give me a PM in-game.
Thank you all for the patience. --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 14:19, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

How YOU Can Help

See FAQ

  1. Find a page that needs to be moved (lists of all wiki can be found here eRepublik:Bar/Deletion)
  2. Check the URL... Is it in Lower case when it shouldn't be?
  3. Click the Move Tab
  4. Rename the page with the appropriate capitalization.
  5. If there is an option to "Move subpages" click the box
  6. Click Move
  7. Repeat.

Check with #wiki for help or for coordination. :) --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 15:18, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

Pages where the titles were put into lower case have been moved to their new locations except for a few that can be found at the bottom of the page here:Special:LonelyPages. What else needs to be done:

  • Finish the stragglers mentioned above
  • Delete the redirects that were created from moving pages
  • Get a bot to fix the image names that were messed up.
  • Determine what to do about country names
  • Await instructions from Wig HQ on what to do next and what the plans are.

Thank you EVERYONE, especially Litro, Taksas027, KristofferAG, Hrvat, Shakal, and AndyCro who helped move pages over the last few days. Your patience, time, and good humor have been greatly appreciated. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 19:14, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

Regarding the third task - bot for images. I would like to say: Images are "down" because the links to the images were written without taking notice to small caps. For example: It is not the same to put the image link: Image:Andycro.jpg and Image:andycro.jpg. I think that it would be better that editors simply edit the articles with the link corrections. The same goes for templates. For example: stub is not the same as Stub. --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 11:13, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
No. Images no longer appear as well as the notices because the conversion script was used. Thus things need to be fixed. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 13:41, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
The forth task. Determine what to do with country names. Honestly it is the same thing. If we are going to relocate them to Country_Name of the country, we will have to create redirects from Name of the country to Country_Name of the country. If we decide that we are going to continue with Name of the country we will have to create redirects from Country_Name of the country to Name of the country. Maybe it is even better to remain simply on the Name of the country. Honestly, it is the same to me. --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 11:13, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
I'd say: for pages that are never gonna increase/decrease in number (countries, regions): call them Name and create a redirect from Country_Name. Case Sensitive Wiki

Case sensitive is Cool My opinion is to let the Wiki be 100% case sensitive and what you type is what you get. My main arguments are:

  • all newbies are "lost" because they do not know the first letter capitalized rule. It's quite awkward to explain to them - "You know, the Wiki is case sensitive, but not fully . That first letter must be capitalized, but you can make links with lowercases". If we let the Wiki case sensitive fully, then is "There is one rule in the Wiki regarding editing and search: what you type is what you get."
  • there are still a lot of pages to be moved and deleted. If we go back to first letter capitalized, absolutely ALL the PAGES from all namespaces must have the first letter capitalized before making the changes (including images). If pages or files remain with lowercases, errors will start appearing.

And yes. The team should have asked or (at least) announce the Wiki Community about the changes. Nicolae Carpathia will write in a few minutes the arguments for which he thinks is better we go back to the first letter capitalized automatically rule. --Geo (talk) 20:51, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
Case Sensitive Is Stupid

  • It is not difficult to explain the way capitalization works. It's even like this on the real Wikipedia, which is much bigger than the eRepublik Wiki, and they have far more users than we do. No, the first letter cannot be capitalized. That's the only restriction. The argument "Oh, it's so hard to explain!" is a piss-poor reason to switch to a more complex system. If someone can't comprehend how we can have lower case links to capitalized articles, how are we going to explain that, in a case sensitive wiki, "You have to write your links EXACTLY AS YOU WANT THEM TO APPEAR otherwise they won't work and the people reading your article won't know what's going on!"
  • How is this a problem? We've already worked to move everything over to capitalized first letters. A few people have spent countless hours working thanklessly to move everything. Are you seriously suggesting that we go "Well I know we had consensus to move away from case sensitivity and you spent hours of your lives helping us get ready for that, but we were just kidding!" I'm sure they'd agree with me that this is complete bullshit.

The comments were removed from Case Sensitive is Cool here so they are all on one place! ;) —Nicolae Carpathia | PEACE Global Community | Talk 20:59, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

OK, I will rather post here than on Nicolae's idea. Why? I think that we must set some rules. As I am translator, a lot of articles had double translation. How do I mean double? For example, I translate Weapon and my co-translator translates Weapons. Also, for translators is quite better that rule of Case Sensitive and even rule of singular should be implemented. This will simplify work for them a lot. And as I can see, the search doesn't care is the word Case Sensitive or not. So, conclusion: Let's go with Case Sensitive with some basic rules: The name of the article MUST start with uppercase and it must be singular. For example, the name of the article CANNOT be weapon or Weapons! This is my view of the problem.--AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 11:44, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
Andy, that's exactly what I said. The page title has to be uppercase. That's exactly what Belea is arguing against. —Nicolae Carpathia | PEACE Global Community | Talk 19:23, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Prefixes

Prefixes are cool There was a long discussion when the Wiki Book Links were added in the eRepublik site if these links should have prefixes or not. The way it is now (with prefixes) has been chosen because there can be always two or more "entities" with the same name. Yes, some ideas are fixed: citizen/organization names (although it will be introduced in the distant future the feature of changing them), countries, regions and major pages (e.g.: newspaper), but other structures can be renamed at any time (companies, parties, etc.). They can take any name they want - country names, citizen names, etc. You can make an organization called "Newspaper" or "Greece" at any time. The majority of the persons which attended that discussion concluded that prefixes are required in order to have pages with almost zero possibility of having a Wiki link that leads to the same page in the Wiki. I wish to know if we are definitely decided that prefixes are not needed. Thank you all in advance for posting your opinions on these two ideas. --Geo (talk) 21:44, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
Prefixes Are Stupid Prefixes are not necessary. What is necessary is a clear set of naming conventions based on a hierarchy of naming rights.

  • Countries are in the first tier. Greece will always point to the country, no matter how many parties or newspapers change their name to "Greece".
  • Citizens and Organizations are in the second tier. As long as these entities do not take the name of a Country, they will always control their name space. For example, Nicolae Carpathia will always link to the citizen page because there is no country called "Nicolae Carpathia". However, if there is an Organization or Citizen called "Greece", it will be labeled as such with a parenthetical label. So, Greece (organization) or Greece (citizen).
  • Parties are in the third tier. As long as the party does not take the name of a Country or Citizen, it will control its name space. Otherwise, it will take a parenthetical label. E.g., Greece (party)
  • Newspapers and companies form the fourth tier. As long as they don't take the name of any of the above, they'll have their own space. Otherwise, it'll be something like Greece (newspaper). If there are multiple, then they can be further defined. Greece (Greek newspaper) or Greece (Alexandroupoli newspaper) or however specific it needs to be.

To make sure people who want to find these different things called Greece can find them, we would make Greece (disambiguathttp://wiki.erepublik.com/skins/common/images/button_sig.pngion) and link EVERY PAGE that starts with "Greece" or contains "Greece" so that everything can be found, and then we can link to that disambiguation page from the links section of Greece.

Prefixes are meaningless and ugly. If someone wants to look up Greece, they will type in "Greece", not "Country Greece". If someone wants to look up "Nicolae Carpathia", they will type in "Nicolae Carpathia", not "Citizen Nicolae Carpathia". Having prefixes will just mean that every single page will also need a redirect so that people can find the page they want when they want it. It'll double the number of pages on the wiki for no reason. —Nicolae Carpathia | PEACE Global Community | Talk 21:57, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

I agree with Nicolae with the fact that searching for countries and citizens is quite ugly if they have prefixes, for example: If someone searches for Greece he will get multiple results and Country_Greece will probably be in the middle. But on the other hand, this will pressure people to read other articles, not only "country article". But, again, on the other hand, redirect Greece - Country_Greece will be a MUST because nobody had used the wiki link Country_Name of the country in all articles created so far. So, whatever you decide, to use or not to use prefixes on have this in mind that redirects will have to be made if you continue with prefixes. OK, now this what I wrote is like use prefixes/don't use prefixes.
Conclusion: If there is no way that two persons can name their newspapers: My Newspapers, than leave the prefixes on wiki link. If two persons can name their newspapers: My Newspapers in the same time, that the Nicolae's idea is better and we do not need prefixes, we need disambiguation pages on wiki. ;) --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 11:44, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
I agree with what has been already said but I would like to make another point. Prefixes make it difficult for people to write articles, which is the point of the wiki. For example, if I am writing about my friend AndyCro. I am not going to automatically think Citizen AndyCro, much less will newbies think to write AndyCro. Even worse, people will start to make redirects so that the AndyCro link is redirected to Citizen AndyCro.
Furthermore, any pages that are named similarly can be handled with redirect pages. Since we now have a larger group of syops, I think we will be able to deal with these issues much easier.
A more robust search engine should also help with this situation.

+1 on that. --Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 16:45, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
An addendum to this. If a lower-tier subject exists and someone makes a Citizen or Organization with that subject's name, the subject that had the name first will control the namespace. For example, if someone makes a citizen named "Greece Prosperity Movement", any links pointing to Greece Prosperity Movement will link to the party because the party came first. The citizen's wiki page would be Greece Prosperity Movement (citizen). —Nicolae Carpathia | PEACE Global Community | Talk 19:31, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Articles position

I think that we should implement a rule that everything about party or citizen or country, should be "standardized" and put in this order: Citizen/Achievements, or Party/History, or Country/Congress. The best example is United Kingdom:

  1. United Kingdom/Government Apprenticeship Scheme
  2. United Kingdom/Belgian Division Policy
  3. United Kingdom/Ombudsman
  4. United Kingdom/Employment Strategy
  5. United Kingdom/Citizen Awards
  6. ...

I am wondering because I have found couple of articles like History of Croatia and I was wondering would it be better to move it on Croatia/History. (Yes, I create this article, but I think that this would be much "nicer"!) What do you think, should this rule be implemented?

No, "History of Greece" looks better than "Greece/History" in my opinion.—Nicolae Carpathia | PEACE Global Community | Talk 17:00, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

eRepublik

Should I restore eRepublik redirects because this could be an exception (official name of the game)?

Restoring redirects

I could restore some "old" redirects that were deleted by the script. For example, I already restore 3 of them:

  1. EREP:FIC
  2. EREP:REF
  3. EREP:DEL

I could restore more, but I need to know what are we going to do with countries, citizens, and so on...

Final decision and Editor guide

We have to make our final decision of what are we going to do so we can update old guides and create a completely new guide (especially if the "old" wiki links from eRepublik are going to be changed). I think that we must bring this decision until next Friday (22 May)

The admins have broke the wiki and I haven't seen them say anything nor do anything in a while. They are probably lost themselves, this is why I have always called them unprofessional and I will never stop because they will forever remain unprofessional, trust me - I know after more than a year of playing this game. I am waiting for them to do something? Rollback? They broke everything. --Aryamehr Flag of Iran talk 17:28, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

Personally, I don't like having the oceans as borders because there are no oceans in eRepublik. Most COUNTRY pages do not have the regions that they border because it is not in the game. If anything, the other countries it borders is normally listed. Bordering regions are usually left to the region pages where accurate information is provided by the game. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 16:18, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

Have changed it to only include land and maritime borders. Land borders include those countries where the land mass actually touches, whereas maritime borders refer to thos borders across the sea, ex. UK's border with US.--Malta 1990 16:56, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

Firstly, How do you get those cool sigs with flags and logos and coloured text? Secondly, is there a way to link to sub-sections of wiki pages from the citizen template?--Malta 1990 16:59, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

There's a thing about the sigs in the general help I think. Basically you go to your preferences, put in some code and then you can edit your sig from User:Malta_1990/Signature. Don't ask me what the code is though! Not sure what you mean for the other thing. You can link to sub-sections with a hash though. eg. Come on editors!

OK people, we appreciate your patience, that is great, but give us some info about what to do. I have like zillion options. I can restore the old articles (that will take like 1 year), but I would be more than happy to that. Also, there was said that the articles are now case sensitive. This is a little bit odd. Country and country are still the same articles. What is with that? :(

I am probably the most patient man here and there is no problem for me to wait additional week, month or a year, but the fact is that we have some new editors standing by with wish to create new, or translate "old" articles to their languages. So please give your thought on upper sections so we can create new guidelines for them if they are needed!
Thank you. --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 19:41, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Ideas further

  1. Case Sesitivity is gone. If you try to create a page with lowercase, it will be automatically created uppercased. The links with lowercases are automatically linked to the uppercased pages.
  2. Prefixes will be gone. The team has decided that the prefixes are not needed and that they will be removed from the Wiki links from the eRepublik site. At the moment, I cannot give an exact estimation when it will be done.
  • All the new pages will be created without prefixes.
  • The pages that now have prefixes will be moved to non-prefixed pages.
  • The Citizen Page Tutorial will be updated to reflect these ideas.
    • The Wiki links between the game and the Wiki will not work in the mean time.
    • The MediaWiki:SiteNotice will be updated to inform and explain why they are not working.
      • Creating redirect of any kind will not be a good idea because they will have to be manually removed when the Updates in the Wiki links from the eRepublik site will be finished.

Thanks to all for the good work, feedback, support, constructive criticism, ideas and opinions. It's good to be back! :awesome: --Geo (talk) 01:06, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

I think we should be ok with redirects now. Can't we just delete redirects with the prefix of Citizen, Newspaper, Company, or Party?--QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 03:20, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
Don't worry about redirects, I will delete them, but I would suggest that we prolong this until the new wiki links on eRepublik start to work (so if a person makes a redirect until than, that we don't kill him/her for it, just put a warning to his/her talk page)! --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 09:10, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

NEW WIKI ORDER!

ALL WIKI EDITORS SHOULD READ
We finally have new directives on the wiki. I want to condense what Geo said earlier into directives into what people can do.

BACKGROUND
When V1 was released, to connect the game to the wiki through the black book links, wiki editors were required to create redirects. This created a situation where the wiki had more redirects than pages. Also, at least 50% of users neglected to create the redirects, forcing other users to make the connection back to the game. On May 5, an attempt was made to change this. The redirects were deleted and there was an experiment to force all wiki pages to have prefixes (creating the lovely "Country X" pages). The wiki community revolted. Not only did it break every link in the wiki, it made it impossible to write pages, and just looked silly. As a result, it has been decided that the game developers will change the way the game links to the wiki, skipping redirects and prefixes. This code change should be accomplished in a few months.

THIS IS THE NEW WIKI ORDER:

  • The experiment with prefixes is over. From now on, prefixes will NOT be used in front of page names (eg, Country Pakistan or Citizen Frank)
  • The wiki is no longer case sensitive
  • The wiki will not be connected to the game for a period of time until the coding that links the game to the wiki is revised.
  • Redirects can now be made (after reading guidelines)
  • All new pages should be started from the wiki, not by clicking the wiki link in the game.

THIS IS WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE:

  • Pages with Prefixes need to be moved to non-prefix pages
  • Links created with prefixes need to be changed
  • Syops need to delete the pages that say "Country X" to remove from the system
  • The Citizen Page Tutorial needs to be updated (I have some other updates I want to make to it, so I will do this)
  • Redirects need to be recreated to link cities to regions

REDIRECT GUIDELINES:

  • It isn't preferred, but users can create redirects between the game and the wiki, no one will stop you. But we ask that no effort is made to recreate all of the redirects that were deleted after May 5 because they will be deleted again (why waste your time and someone else's later?)
  • Do not create redirects for party abbreviations. There are getting to be so many parties in the game, it is hard to know what the abbreviations mean. If you choose to use an abbreviation in your article and want it to be a link, please do this instead: BLF.
  • Do not create redirects for misspellings. (seriously, people do this...)

--QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 16:40, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm not sure about the last one being absolute; certain party titles with apostrophes or punctuation might be an exception. - –Dr. AgentChieftain Flag of the Crescent and Star PPP! B / C / D / F / P / S 03:30, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Once again, thanks for everyone's cooperation. I know that things have been difficult lately, but I have been really impressed with the community spirit, enthusiasm, and helpfulness that the majority of people have shown.--QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 03:18, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

There is a Special Page that lets you pick a prefix and then displays all pages with that prefix. Highly useful to us now. —Nicolae Carpathia | PEACE Global Community | Talk 10:40, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
Can the same be done with redirects? Like for instance, if people start putting redirects in for cities (eg, cities --> regions), can we keep those redirects but delete any that started with a prefix? I am hating this no redirect stuff...--QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 13:10, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
That page is very good. Shows redirects in italics, so you can see which ones still need moving --Sir Graystar Icon-United Kingdom.png got a question? 09:41, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
I have updated the English version of the Citizen Page Tutorial... but at the same time screwed up the foreign language versions. I apologize to all and have asked for template intervention from MiniBill. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 20:49, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
Apologies, but I didn't know to whom I could direct this question. I would like to know how the Wiki shall be linked to the games, as in, when you press the Wiki/book icon on a citizen/newspaper/party/org, will it end up going to, for example Citizen John Smith, or to page John Smith? If it's the former, will we be creating redirects on the Citizen John Smith page? Thanks Starks Hayter 10:22, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
According to what I have heard, the eRep game developers will create links so that the wiki link in the game will go directly to the wiki page. So if your user name is John Smith, clicking the link in the game will open the page "John Smith". There will be no interim redirect page with Citizen in front of it. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 20:36, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
Great, thank you Starks Hayter 02:08, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
Seems like that's it. I remember when they first introduced it, I think I was the only one going against it. Amazing how awesome I am and how the team thinks they know everything yet nothing. Others just blindly followed them. --Aryamehr Flag of Iran talk 12:22, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

Glad you agree that I am awesome! --Aryamehr Flag of Iran talk 16:40, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
Just a short growl : would have been kind to send a private message to the corresponding in-game avatars (maybe using a bot) a week before or so, before deleting the citizen pages ! I usually don't come and read my own page. Not very pleasant to discover deletion afterwards, and just hoping nothing was lost, just hoping ! (Note that I don't say I am against reorganizations. Nice thing when you decided to do it. Just the manner...) -- ELw 08:22, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
Growls I can take. Barks I can take. It is the bites that hurt! ELw, the pages that were deleted were pages that started with "Citizen" (or Company, Newspaper, Country, Region). These pages didn't have content, they only had redirects that linked user profiles to the wiki. So Citizen eLW linked to a page called ELw where all of your content is. You just probably didn't notice it. When the transition is over, the wiki black book link will work again and take you directly to your user page, without a need to create a redirect page in between. Oh and about the name "New Wiki Order"... I thought an homage to conspiracy theories was in order. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 19:52, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Spelling

For words like defence, should we use American or English spelling? --Sir Graystar Icon-United Kingdom.png got a question? 19:45, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

The game uses "defense" but we used to have enough redirects so that "Minister of Defense" and "Minister of Defence" were linked to the same page, same with Defense/Defence System. It will take awhile to recreate the redirects. Anyway, to answer your question, use which ever you prefer. Both are correct. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 20:24, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
I'd say: for ministers use the english name for uk/ireland ones the american one for US ones. --Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 21:13, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
Ok thanks --Sir Graystar Icon-United Kingdom.png got a question? 15:15, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Redirects

After conversion script there's some names with and it links nowhere so it may happen because a lot redirections were deleted, so I think we should find where it was linked before. Names: construction, Members of Congress, manufacturing, force, army, party election links to voting system, but I think there should be new page for it like with congress and presidential elections. Maybe someone have found more so write it here. Taksas027 Icon-Lithuania.pngTalk
