Category Review

I have been reviewing the wiki categories, trying to leave you all with a better sense of order. Making these changes will increase consistency in category names, reduce redundancy, and make it easier for both readers and editors to find. Unfortunately, changing a category name usually means making a change on every page in the category (unless there is a template). Please attend to these issues when you get a chance.

  • Branches of the British Armed Forces, Regiments of the British Army, Ships of the Royal Navy, United Kingdom Armed Forces…. These are four categories that are used redundantly. This is my suggestion to make it cleaner and fit with the other categories:
But Military of United Kingdom isn't even gramatically correct! :( I'm thoroughly disappointed - Icon-UK.png John F Baker Icon-South Africa.png talk/British Army librarian 20:22, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
    • Create a hierarchy. Category:Military of United Kingdom with subcategories of Category:Military of United Kingdom – Branches, Category:Military of United Kingdom – Regiments, Category:Military of United Kingdom – Royal Navy. Pages in the subcategory only need the subcategory on them.
Why does category:united kingdom armed forces have to be replaced? Frankly, "military of X" is a naff template name. If anything, we should change all of them TO CountryName Armed Forces.
Branches of the British Armed Forces, Regiments of the British Army, and United Kingdom Armed Forces are updated and added to often, as the British Armed Forces expand and/or change organizationally.
We already HAVE an up-to-date hierarchy of operational units here. It is put on all operational unit pages for easy navigation. Non-operational units' pages (e.g the Royal Navy) are not included in the hierachy, because they are not IN the hierachy. They were in another system of hierachy altogether when they WERE operational! - Icon-UK.png John F Baker Icon-South Africa.png talk/British Army librarian 16:19, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
Too late to change the categories "Military of X". That naming convention is based on "organizations of X", companies of X, etc. I am not married with changing the names of the UK's subcategories. I suggested it so that when you look at the category list, you don't have to search far. But the main category should be changed for regularity. You misunderstand what I mean by hierarchy. Pages that are in a subcategory, like "Regiments of the British Army" should only have the category "Regiments of the British Army". If it is also categorized as "Military of United Kingdom"/"UK Armed Forces" then it is redundant because Regiments is a sub category of the UK Armed forces. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 17:18, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
Ah I see. "Too late to change the categories "Military of X". - could we not use a script that'd change the categories for us? I really do prefer XX Armed Forces - it's more grammatically correct for the United Kingdom as a country name. (Category:Military of X does not have a "the" in it). Also, it shows the full country name, not just "UK". Regularity isn't too much of a concern. eSA, eUSA and eUK all used XX Armed Forces, and no one would look at that category name and think HIGHLY IRREGULAR, HMPH :P
However, I'll remove the categories from "redundant"'d pages :) - Icon-UK.png John F Baker Icon-South Africa.png talk/British Army librarian 17:34, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
Done! - Icon-UK.png John F Baker Icon-South Africa.png talk/British Army librarian 21:26, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
We don't really have anyone skilled or with the time to create renaming bots. I have wanted one for a long time, but we never got one up and running. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 13:59, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
Hmm... *googles creating wiki bots* - Icon-UK.png John F Baker Icon-South Africa.png talk/British Army librarian 16:32, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
Seems you can make a bot with php code! I know basic PHP and I have a couple of friends in the eUK who are professional PHP coders... if we COULD ask them to make a bot, would changing Category:Military of X to Category:XX Armed Forces be agreeable? - Icon-UK.png John F Baker Icon-South Africa.png talk/British Army librarian 17:21, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
I do not know... Croatia Armed Forces seem like that this is not gramatically correct... It should be Croatian Armed Forces. I do not know for the other nations, but I believe that only big named countries that you mentioned would apply for this Armed Forces naming system. For now I am undecided 0--AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 17:31, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
We could create a bot that changes specific Category:Military of A to Aian Armed Forces, Military of B to B Armed Forces etc. - Icon-UK.png John F Baker Icon-South Africa.png talk/British Army librarian 18:09, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
  • Category:Organizations of United Kingdom should be Category:Organizations of UK. If you want to change UK to United Kingdom, all pages in the category must be changed.
    • Done. I'll add a notice to the template that people use UK instead of United Kingdom. edit: What do you know, there already is a notice.--Icon-Finland.png Kuhaa|sTalk to me! 08:36, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
  • Category:People of United Kingdom should be Category:People of UK.
    • Done. I'll add a notice to the template that people use UK instead of United Kingdom. edit: What do you know, there already is a notice.--Icon-Finland.png Kuhaa|sTalk to me! 08:36, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
  • United States Armed Forces change all pages to Category:Military of USA.
  • We need consistency in the naming of Congress List Categories. The pages in the following categories should be changed to "Congress of [Country]."
  • Combine the categories Category:Unreferenced articles and Category:Unreferenced pages. I think this has something to do with changing the categories on the templates used on these pages.
    • Done. I decided to delete Category:Unreferenced pages because the template using it was created before, and "article" sounds more official. I also believe it is more accurate a term. If we want to use the other category instead, just edit Template:Unreferenced and Template:Ref/? accordingly. --Icon-Finland.png Kuhaa|sTalk to me! 09:56, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
  • Reduce subcategories in Category:Dioism. The information is not diverse or so much that most of these subcategories can be dropped. I think you might have to change templates for this.
  • Remove these categories from the wiki all together WikiProject Australia pages, WikiProject Canada pages, WikiProject Military Articles, WikiProject Thailand Pages. There is absolutely NO NEED for these categories. If something falls under a wikiproject, it is best to put a notation on the Category page instead of marking every page. See Category:Thailand for an example.

This is a job any editor can do (except if it means changing templates). Most of these changes should only take a few minutes. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 16:20, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

I have a question regarding categorization of old articles which are now on One namespace. On many translated articles there are two categories: Category:Version1 and language category. Wouldn't it be better that we create around 20 new categories named Version 1 name of the language so that only one category should be on the translated articles? Example Category:Version1 Hrvatski. I have to mentioned that there are created categories One:Economy, etc. which I think that we DO NOT NEED and that regular Version1 is enough. --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 07:58, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I added them, Andy. They were the ones that I saw in the main economy section, and there was quite a lot of them, so I thought it made sense to make a category for them in the One namespace as well. I have no objection to them being removed if they are unnecessary - theres been a heck of a lot of updating happening the last few months, and Im not perfect :P --Icon-Australia.png Timeoin|Say G'Day 11:56, 19 September 2010 (UTC)--Icon-Australia.png Timeoin|Say G'Day 11:56, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
+1 for Andy's idea about version 1 categories for each language. It can be easily done with the {{Version1}} template (no need to update all pages manually). --Icon-Finland.png sampo555 | Talk 16:05, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
-1 to Sampo555 saying that there was no need to update all the pages manually, after I have spent the last 2 months doing just that! --Icon-Australia.png Timeoin|Say G'Day 16:23, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
Sorry Timeoin. I better say: "There is no need to do it again to add categories." Like it now? (but when it comes to deleting language categories, we'll have to do it again) --Icon-Finland.png sampo555 | Talk 16:31, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Idea about what happened to the productivity formula:

On Day (whatever it was), one of the Admins became clinically depressed. This can be directly contributed to their lack of happiness, which in turn was likely brought out about by their inability to chill out. As a result of this, they decided to try and destroy anything and everything they could. In the process, the managed to destroy the only known productivity formula in existence. Many lives were lost in this fire, and at the end of it all, very few people in the eWorld survived. Those that survived forgot how to be Architects, Builders, and so on, and instead focused on the one generic Economy skill, figuring that such skills helped the Economy anyway. It is unknown which Admin it was that went crazy, but was is known that they perished in the fire that burnt down the Great Library Just wanted to share my little burst of insanity with you all :P --Icon-Australia.png Timeoin|Say G'Day 12:40, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Retirement

To the entire Wiki Community:
I will be retiring from the wiki at the end of September. As most of you have noticed, I haven't been as active in the wiki. I don't really have the time or desire anymore. My job, other interests, and personal life have become more important. I also feel like I have done all I can for the wiki. I am proud of the work I have done here and very lucky to have become friends with many of you. But, it is time to hand it over to a new group.

About formulas

The eRepublik team will not longer make public any formulas of the game for the following reasons:

  • The game should be very intuitive when it comes to formulas.
  • Formulas should be something that it can be guessed; thus be rewarding for those that find it out.

On formula pages which are no longer up to date, the following text will be added: "The eRepublik Library caught fire on Day 1023 of the New World. Unfortunately, the documentation for the formula described below was lost in that fire. No other documentation will be created by archivists. There are rumors that a few citizens are trying to replicate the new formula and document it." ( you can improve that text any time; like adding Day 1000 instead of 1023 OR adding more emerging user story to the fact that the formula will not be officially updated)

Here's an example: Productivity

What happens if a citizen "guesses" the formula and puts in the Wiki? Just change the text to something like: "The eRepublik Library caught fire on Day 1023 of the New World. Unfortunately, the OFFICiAL documentation for the formula described below was LOST in that fire. This article is created using hints provided by a few citizens who tried to replicate the new formula and document it."

The team will never confirm or deny the accuracy of an in-game formula.

Feel free to post any questions or suggestions. --Belea2008 09:03, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

The said that they were fixing the productivity formulas to make it more productive for new employees. Well... that would mean that there was MUCH MUCH more incentive for immoral players to cheat. By hiding the formula, noone knows the EXACT amount of production by new players (or other players anymore) - so noone knows the exact risk/payoff ratio, anymore. --Icon-Australia.png Timeoin|Say G'Day 11:36, 9 September 2010 (UTC)
This idea isn't good at all. How many citizens want to start a company if they can't know how much that company will produce? Not many. But I think that our opinions doesn't matter. --Icon-Finland.png sampo555 | Talk 13:13, 9 September 2010 (UTC)
This is a horribly bad idea. The first thing many citizens do with bought gold is start companies. Admin are driving away the very people they most want to stick around to pay for gold.--Endy Proud to be American chat 18:43, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

WE NEED FORMULAS! --Marnes 19:05, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

Without formulas, company owners won't know their profit/losses, cost prices etc. It will become too risky to run companies and they will just shut down, increasing unemployment, not decreasing it like this idea is meant to. This is one of the most retarded ideas they have ever come out with. Viado Celtru

This isn't our problem, its the Admins, you make a ticket and let them not answer it. Icon-EDEN.png Icon-Australia.png Rowan Quigley Talk to me! 01:52, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
Honestly, this is just getting ridiculous. By trying to fix the economy, the Admin have decided to just make it to where "Hey, we're not going to tell you how your company runs, so just take a guess and hope for the worst!" I really am disappointed in the latest decisions. - Jewitt eUS de A/Awesometown Hatemail is appreciated! 03:12, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
New players earning more actually increases Cheating (in the form of generating millions of fakes). One method against fakes would be to have captcha in the registration process (which afaik is not implemented, even though it's the simplest thing...for a real programmer). Anyway, is there any meaning of writing wiki articles from now on? I was waiting for erep to "stabilize" so I can start translating articles again, but this is just becoming a big mess... A question for Belea, that concern all formulas ? just for be sure before edit all pages ~~ Azaret Icon-Paraguay.png déjame un mensaje (: 07:41, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
The new "policy" involves all formulas. Like I said in the beginning of the conversation, anyone can "guess" the new productivity formula. Thus, the first of the tools (or the one which has the most accurate results) (and others):
will be more successful in the long term.
And one last detail, no one stops any citizen to publish an article with presumptions or insightful information about any formula.

I so fully agree with what Azaret said. :( :) --Belea2008 12:20, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
Ok, people start to speculate and edit formulas, what I propose it's to keep the last known formulas, and add a 'speculation' section on formulas pages, and on the same idea, add the message about this measure on the summary page of formulas, with referrer to this page in all formulas page ~~ Azaret Icon-Paraguay.png déjame un mensaje (: 13:11, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
Nice idea. Go for it! --Belea2008 13:17, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
In my oppinion thats a bad idea. Formula pages are supposed to be informativ, the change proposed by Azaret will make them extremly confusing over time.
Please simply use the changed template like proposed at the begining of this discussion - I don't like this whole "admins refuse/are to lazy to give us information thing but don't make it even worse. Greetings, the first mythfinder --NosFi 15:28, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
I'm totally agree with that if pages are informative, but, it's not the case anymore, at least until admins decide to communicate formulas again. so all you can write now, is purely speculation, and not sure. The fire idea, it's just for make it more 'funny' and roleplay than just write "admin decide to don't give formulas anymore", then to keep the last known version and have a separate section for players speculations are better, because not everybody will be agree for these formulas, for example, on my article someone post a different solution than yours. ~~ Azaret Icon-Paraguay.png déjame un mensaje (: 15:43, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
1.) Please point me to that articel. I want to check that second solution
2.) In case we have to different formulas and can't agree on which one is the correct own we can still write both into the articel. The formulas will continue to change and the old one's posted by the admins will soon be completle useless. If we implement all changes according to your idea no one will be able to find out which formula is the right one. --NosFi 15:57, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
sorry, I checked but was not here I saw it, I don't retrieve it. Well, as I said to Belea, let's other said what they think about that because I'm not sure we'll be agree :D ~~ Azaret Icon-Paraguay.png déjame un mensaje (: 16:13, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
I think it`s bad idea to play in "guess the formula". In most cases companies runs with very small profit because salaries and prices wars. 20gold (and it`s for q1-companies only!) is pretty hard and long time to take back from companies profit. Companies management it`s about fun, not profit. But no profit at all - no fun at all. GMs need 100% accurate formulas to compute prices and salaries, or it`s become a lottery. Not only productivity formula, but other too, because there is need to decide customization and so on.Olesxander 17:54, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
Merged the two different theories into a single article. The theories could start piling up though, not really sure how long this is going to work. --Endy Proud to be American chat 19:03, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
Belea - it seems pretty unanimous - many many people dislike this new "no-formulas" idea. --Icon-Australia.png Timeoin|Say G'Day 10:32, 13 September 2010 (UTC)
I simplified the page + I left only one calculator on the page - the one that claims that it is using the new formulas. --Belea2008 13:43, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

Should you really be publishing the next NEW version of eRepublik here?
It should be kept secret, just like the formulas.
You have even published the future- expected population figures: 18983.

Categories Pt 2

The templates show up in the category "People of eRepublik". Templates should only show up in template categories. Is there a way to remove the categories from showing up on this?

  • Template:NCitizen
  • Template:NCitizen/doc

I thought we had talked about changing this template's category to just "Party Alliances" instead of specific countries.

  1. Party Alliances of Bulgaria (2 members)
  2. Party Alliances of Chile (2 members)
  3. Party Alliances of Italy (1 member)
  4. Party Alliances of eRepublik
  5. Historical Party Alliances of Serbia (1 member)
Done ~~ Icon-Romania.png McKayRO|Say hello! 13:22, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

My thought is that the party alliance template should create "Category:Party Alliances". Then users can add the additional category of "Category:Parties of [country]" so that it shows up in the category with the other parties of the country.

I think we can put both, but for now, don't know... 0 ~~ Icon-Romania.png McKayRO|Say hello! 16:56, 23 September 2010 (UTC)

We dropped the orientation category from the party template. However, these pages are still creating the categories. I believe that this means a template change/update.

  1. Far-Left Parties (4 members)
  2. Far-Right Parties (9 members)
  3. Center-Right Parties (11 members)
  4. Center Parties (15 members)

Vertical Clade?

So, I'm working on a project to show military units of erepublik armed forces, (see User:John F Baker/app6a and User:John F Baker/app6a/title for more info) with nato-stylized diagrams - it's ideal, with the different ingame weapon types :) I've got all the content sorted, but now I've got to the point where I want to make hierachy lines to turn a table into a proper chart. Template:clade only seems to work sideways, although the style is ideal :( Anyone know a "vertical clade"-like template, or know how to make one? My aim is to make a sub-template that'd allow a user to plugin the units, and it'd make the vertical chart FOR them, without them having to hardcode all the lines :) - Icon-UK.png John F Baker Icon-South Africa.png talk/British Army librarian 22:17, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

The delete page

(Log here http://wiki.erepublik.com/index.php/Special:Log/delete) I found that QJ Lincoln deleted this page [[1]] And QJ Lincoln left the message below: (langauge category not correct, and already have pages in the two chinese forms) But QJ Lincoln recover this page [[2]]

So, anyone can tell me that Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese are the same language on erepublik wiki? --BillWilson 05:22, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

As I don't speak Chinese, I am not 100 % sure, but according to the Jameson they are not the same language! --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 08:18, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
I think you should talk also with QJ about it. --Belea2008 09:56, 27 September 2010 (UTC)
They are dialects of the same language, but we had enough requests to have both of them. The pages were deleted because they had the wrong category/ One I figured was an error by comparing a few things. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 13:31, 27 September 2010 (UTC)
