The ONE Invasion of Bulgaria was one of the fronts of the Fourth Balkan War, and by extension part of the much later global conflict of World War V.
Prelude
In the months prior to the conflict, Bulgaria was a member of the Phoenix Alliance and had taken part in a rental agreement with two of Iran's regions. During that time Bulgaria and Iran had good relations, however, after a while, Bulgaria left Phoenix and soon after that joined EDEN. Despite the fact that the two countries were now in enemy alliances, the rental agreement continued, because it was an agreement between Iran and Bulgaria and not between the alliances.
After the implementation of the new resource system, Bulgaria decided to rent another region from Iran. During the swap tensions begun to surface. Bulgaria wanted to invade India and the Middle East and needed Iran to make a bridge. Iran refused. The relations between the two countries became even more strained when the USA (an ally of Bulgaria) temporarily invaded Iran as they attempted to enter the Balkans.
Shortly after, Iran decided to expel Bulgaria from its territories. Bulgaria took the offensive and managed to push forward to the borders of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Even though the two countries were now enemies, Bulgaria still had respect for its former ally and only kept the regions it needed to get to the other countries. Because of the automatic fights, Bulgaria had no choice but to attack other regions of Iran, but later returned them through resistance wars. There was even an agreement between the governments of the two countries to sell the medals from the RW and to give the money to the Iranian government as compensation for using their regions.
Bulgaria managed to get to India and rented three regions there. The next target was Saudi Arabia, but because of the already ongoing Middle East War it couldn't propose Saudi Arabia as a natural enemy until the border regions were freed. During that time the president of Iran, Laya was banned as part of the mass-ban President's Rebellion movement, and the post was taken by a pro-Phoenix and pro-ONE President who pushed the attack and managed to expel Bulgaria from Iran and the colonies in the Middle East.
Thereafter things began to calm down, but on 19 March 2011 Iran attacked Bulgaria in its colonies in Pakistan in an effort once and for all to expel Bulgaria from Asia. During this time Iran had drawn closer to the ONE alliance, though did not hold official membership. The attack would be part of a coordinated global offensive by ONE forces, including the Fourth Balkan War, Second Poland-Germany War, and the ONE invasion of France.
Forces
ONE Forces
Serbia, Hungary, Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), Turkey and Iran were directly involved in this conflict. They received help from other ONE and pro-ONE countries, especially in the Balkan Campaign. Serbia and Hungary were already official members of ONE at the start of the war and Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) joined ONE on 12 April 2011.
Bulgarian Forces
Bulgaria was the only country directly involved in this conflict. It received help from EDEN as well as some Terra and neutral countries. During the Balkan campaign, Bulgarian allies Romania and Croatia had both been conquered by Hungary and Serbia respectively as part of the Fourth Balkan War.
The Battle
The Asian Campaign
The war with Iran began on May 19, 2011. Shortly before the start of the war, Bulgaria and Iran had been involved in a protracted conflict. The war was unexpected because Iran had stated before that it didn't want a long-term war with Bulgaria, but just wanted to expel them from their original territories. Rumors surfaced that Serbia stood behind the Iranian attack, but nothing was confirmed. Serbia wanted to take revenge against Bulgaria, for leaving Phoenix and joining EDEN. Soon the purpose of the war was clear; it was to seemingly wipe out any Bulgarian presence in Asia.
Iran's attack was initially unsuccessful and Bulgaria pushed deep in its territories. During the battle for Fars the tide of the war turned and Iran managed to regain its regions, but was ultimately stopped again at Balochistan. During the war, many Resistance Wars were started in the Bulgarian colonies held in India and Pakistan in order to drain damage. Most of them would be unsuccessful.
Bulgaria again pushed deep into Iran's territories, this time conquering Fars and then Northwestern Iran. The Bulgarian strategy was to create a link between the colonies and its original regions through Turkey, in an attempt to take advantage of the newly implemented changes to the game. The plan, however, didn't succeed due to the invasion of the original Bulgarian territories.
During the Bulgarian march through Iran, Balochistan was returned to Pakistan, as a strategic buffer zone that was intended to prevent Iran from pushing Bulgaria out of its colonies in India.
Even though Bulgaria was easily winning the battle in Iran, they were not as successful in their fight on four fronts in the Balkans against much stronger opponents. Ultimately the exhaustion from those battles took its toll, and Iran managed to reclaim its regions.
When ONE conquered all Bulgaria's original regions, Bulgaria was left with only three colonies in Asia: Kerman Province, Sistan and Baluchistan, and Rajasthan. In an attempt to save its economy a deal was made between the governments of Bulgaria and India to rent additional regions. However before India could declare Bulgaria as a Natural Enemy, ONE liberated all of three regions through Resistance Wars, thus wiping Bulgaria off the map.
The Balkan Campaign
The Balkan front was opened on April 2, 2011, by a Bulgarian attack on Turkey. The Bulgarian people were growing tired of their battles in Iran, which were easily won, and were looking forward to fighting one of their neighbors.
At first, the plan was to attack Hungary, which had conquered many of Romania's region but as Romania regained the upper hand in the war, the border between Bulgaria and Hungary was lost. The next option was to attack either Turkey or the Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). At that time Turkey had begun to free their regions after almost two months of Greek occupation. There were rumors were heard that the Turkish government had plans to conquer Bulgaria, so the Bulgarian government decided to strike first. Unfortunately, the only bordering region of Marmara, was still in Greek hands and the option to declare war on Turkey wasn't available. There was a misunderstanding in the congress and the congress proposed Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) three consecutive times as a Natural Enemy, but those laws weren't accepted. When Turkey finally liberated Marmara, Bulgaria finally managed to declare Turkey as a Natural enemy and launched an attack.
The war between the two countries quickly reached a stalemate. Serbia and Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) had just conquered Croatia and Italy respectively, and decided to help Turkey in their war against Turkey. At the time Bulgaria was winning in their war in ONE-aligned Iran. Serbia felt that Bulgaria had betrayed them by joining EDEN. Tensions rose, with many insults exchanged between the two countries. Shortly after, Serbia declared Bulgaria as a natural enemy.
The ONE-supported plan was for the two countries to partition Bulgaria between themselves. At the same time, the Republic of Macedonia decided to declare Bulgaria as a Natural enemy, creating confusion in ONE strategy. Bulgaria knew it couldn't fight against the combined enemy forces, so it decided to stop fighting in the battles against Serbia and instead focus on Turkey and the Republic of Macedonia (FYROM).
This tactic was successful at first, as Bulgaria managed to capture Marmara and liberate Vidin, which had previously been conquered by Serbia. Even though Bulgaria managed to put up a good defense, its end was near. Hungary had just occupied Romania, and with its forces free from that front, shifted its attack to Bulgaria, beginning with Varna.
Bulgaria was now fighting in a direct war against five countries, and was trying to put down resistance wars in Pakistan and India. During the course of the struggle, there were days where Bulgaria had seven battles occurring simultaneously.
Eventually, Bulgaria couldn't withstand the pressure. Serbia, Hungary and the Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) had partitioned the Bulgarian regions between themselves, while Turkey reclaimed Marmara.
On April 11, 2011, the Balkan campaign ended. On the next day, the final Bulgarian regions in its colonies in Asia were conquered.
Aftermath
As soon as the last Bulgarian region fell, the war for Bulgarian Independence was started. Serbia would then use its conquered region of Burgas to launch an offensive against Russia leading to the Serbia-Russia War.
