Minor rules: categories place, red links and redirects

Hello. I'd like us to make some general rules regarding these things, so all the articles are the same.

Placing of the categories

I have noticed that some pages have categories listed on the top of the page, and some on the bottom. I always place them on bottom, because it doesn't really makes sense to make to have categories placed like this: Category:Presidents of X, Category:People of X, Category:Citizens, Category:People of Y. It kind of makes more sense to have it like this: first general category: Citizens, then another auto-category: People of Y (country of the current cs), then People of X (original/rl cs), and finally Presidents of X.

What Wikipedia says about this:

Category tags should be placed at the bottom of the article, after the appendices and before the inter-wiki language links (see Wikipedia:Layout). This ensures that when newcomers press "edit", they are immediately presented with the main article text, rather than the more esoteric category tags. It also ensures that the category tags are in a consistent place so they are easy to find when an editor is updating the categorization of a bunch of articles.
+1 I always placed them at the very bottom of the page too.

+1 I have no problem in implementing that kind of a rule. --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Do you need assistance? Then ask me! ;)) 23:26, 11 October 2014 (UTC)

Nobody really objected so I will add this to the rules for categories in few days. It is an ok advice, so all the future edits should be done like this. --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Do you need assistance? Then ask me! ;)) 15:14, 12 November 2014 (PST)

Red links

There are red links made by some templates, and I don't think it's really necessary to remove them all. If you can replace it with {{eLink}}, it's fine, but if you can't, no reason to remove data just so there's no more red link there. If red links are forbidden on this wiki, so be it. But leaving them there will help if someone writes the article some day to have better linking to other articles. It also might attract a new editor to come and write a new article. And what is gained by simply removing it? Nothing imho.

Wikipedia:

One study conducted in 2008 showed that red links helped Wikipedia grow.
-1 We have an informal policy about red links, so I'd not overuse them.
--Yamisuke «WANNA FIGHT?!» 12:30, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
-1 "If a link is red, rethink it. Check to see if the link adds anything to the article or if it is misspelled" is a current help tip for red links, with which I totally agree.
Also waiting for someone to write articles to get rid of a RED links is a pipe-dream. We can't even keep up with the important edits.
There are currently OVER 139000 Wanted pages on this wiki (that is ONE HUNDRED THIRTY NINE THOUSAND)- pages that red links point to. Many of this pages have been created by recent deletion/restructuring of Flags, avatars etc.., others are ::automatically created by usage of Language templates... and others are just simply added by some brilliant editor eg.: ALL (Current membership hails from Austria, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, India, Japan, ::South Africa, and the United States). <--- This is was the actual Red link on this wiki... just one of the many gems.--Sre8renica (talk) 14:13, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
Hi,
I removed the red link ad added some colour.
--Yamisuke «WANNA FIGHT?!» 15:05, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
We're having a misunderstanding here. I was referring to red links created by templates. I don't think this is a good idea: https://prntscr.com/4pkv3v . I think that it's better to either leave it red or replace with {{eLink}}. It is still an info, no matter if red. And this: https://prntscr.com/4pkw8o , don't know, keep it red or maybe remove automated linking, not really sure about it. --Icon-Montenegro.png Bogi | Talk 16:05, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
I can remove those red link generators but some pages will break.
--Yamisuke «WANNA FIGHT?!» 16:13, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
It is impossible to remove all red links and removing all of them would suggest that we have everything on wiki. I think that reason should always be a guide when writing an article. Personally I would also suggest new editors to write article without linking if they are not sure. Regarding the current articles, one million years ago people created the {{Citizen}} so that red links would be replaced with articles. Sre8renica, I hear you... Red links are at the moment so low on our TO DO list... Maybe one day we will find the time to battle with them much better than we can do today. --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Do you need assistance? Then ask me! ;)) 23:26, 11 October 2014 (UTC)
+1Definitely creating templates to avoid creation of stupid red links is recommended, but constantly removing red linking from existing templates on expense of thousands of already existing articles I don't support. --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Do you need assistance? This one is definitely for further discussion, but we need far more feedback than this about it.

Redirects

When someone changes nick, the redirect is deleted. Keep in mind that redirects are cheap, so they don't need to be removed. Someone writing an article and wanting to link an old nick might not know the new nick. Yes, they can search, but let's be honest, most players won't bother to do any additional work. So I say, keep old nicks redirects. Actually, a more thorough guidelines about when to have and not to have redirect could be made.

Wikipedia:

Redirects are cheap. Redirects take up minimal disk space and use very little bandwidth. Thus, it doesn't really hurt things if there are a few of them scattered around.

--Icon-Montenegro.png Bogi | Talk 09:32, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

+1 This one is already the unofficial policy for nickname change: we move citizen pages from old nickname to new one (to match the wiki link in eRepublik profile) by keeping the redirect.
--Yamisuke «WANNA FIGHT?!» 12:30, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
0 Again, it all depends about the citizen... Creating million of the redirects for one citizen which loves changing his nickname... I don't know is it really necessary. --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Do you need assistance? Then ask me! ;)) 23:26, 11 October 2014 (UTC)

I thought more about this problem... Well, admins didn't help us a lot by letting people, parties and newspapers to change names rather easily... I have no problems if we decide to leave the redirect, so for now I will not remove them. But it is definitely for further discussions, maybe in 2016 :D --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Do you need assistance? Then ask me! ;)) 15:14, 12 November 2014 (PST)

Maintenance notice

Do we still need this even half year after the maintenance? https://prntscr.com/4wr3kc It's not getting any better than this, and this is quite annoying... --Icon-Montenegro.png Bogi | Talk 10:09, 16 October 2014 (PDT)

You know that you can press hide button on it? :D --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Do you need assistance? Then ask me! ;)) 11:09, 16 October 2014 (PDT)
Yes, but it keeps coming back. --Icon-Montenegro.png Bogi | Talk 14:25, 16 October 2014 (PDT)
That is because you need to update all the pages, and wiki is just sending a reminder for you. :D --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Do you need assistance? Then ask me! ;)) 14:32, 16 October 2014 (PDT)
Yes, we do. We'll keep it until a proper maintenance will be sorted out for wiki.

Country presidents

I have a big task for anyone who thinks that he can...

  • Presidents by month pages needs an urgent update. For 2013 and 2014 there are a lot of missing information. So if anyone is willing to update this cca 12 months of missing information, please feel free to battle with it. If you are really good and person obsessed with details, feel free to add the information about impeachments also (with the link to the impeachment law and the name of the new President). Thank you in advance. --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Do you need assistance? Then ask me! ;)) 15:14, 12 November 2014 (PST)

Task finished. Thank you Sre8renica. --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Do you need assistance? Then ask me! ;)) 10:05, 23 November 2014 (PST)

New accounts

Gucio, what is with this??? --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Do you need assistance? Then ask me! ;)) 13:49, 14 November 2014 (PST)

Hi, wiki is falling apart, at last.
--Yamisuke «WANNA FIGHT?!» 14:25, 15 November 2014 (PST)
As I wrote on my talk page, the email address is not working, users won't get an activation link or their password, thus not accepting any accs as its useless. --"Gucio «Talk»" 07:40, 16 November 2014 (PST)
I understand that, but when is this going to be fixed? This is URGENT to fix. --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Do you need assistance? Then ask me! ;)) 15:35, 16 November 2014 (PST)

Meh, forget all the old account requests, at least now we can get new people. --Icon-Canada.pngCode-Y Talk/Projects 06:11, 21 November 2014 (PST)
