The First Croatia-Austria War began on February 11th, 2010 and ended on February 23rd, 2010.

Background

With France partitioned between EDEN allies Poland and Spain due to the Spain-France War, sentiments were growing in fellow EDEN nation Croatia that they too should have a high resource region from France. In particular, suggestions that they should take the Rhone Alps were made since January.[1] With two possible routes entailing the invasion of neutral nations Italy or Austria, it was speculated Austria would be chosen as the path of least resistance. However, Austria's President at the time, Alfred Ball, refused to give them passage and dissuaded Croatia from attempting an invasion. Relations between Austria and France remained close since France helped Austria out heavily in the Hungary-Austria War, and Austria had no interest in betraying France by aiding in their occupation.

After Borojevic von Bonjar succeeded Alfred Ball as President, he was approached by Phoenix on February 8th with a request for passage through Austria for the purposes of attacking Croatia in Croatian occupied Slovenia. Applying the same policy of no landswaps, Borojevic von Bonjar rejected the request. Two days later, on February 9th, Croatia approached Austria with the same offer given the previous month, this time offering a Q5 Hospital in return as well as repayments for Austria to RW regions back. President Borojevic von Bonjar, who met personally with Croatian negotiator Djani Ujkan Marich, rejected the request. This time, however, Croatia did not accept the answer, causing Borojevic to later remark "I thought that our neutrality was commonly accepted and respected. I was wrong." [2]

War

Hours after the rejection, President Apachy introduced a declaration of war against Austria which passed successfully on February 11th.

Carinthia, Styria, Salzburg

With the passage, Croatia opened an attack on both Carinthia, and Styria - the capital of Austria and site of the only hospital. Now rather than an offer for repayments and a hospital, threats were that unless Austria allowed Croatia through and retreated, it would be wiped off the map and charged 300 gold for the return of each region. Austria quickly signed MPP's through this process, with Slovakia, Slovenia, Russia, and Serbia - though none of these were in effect for the first two battles. As such, both were deeply in the underground with no prospect of recovery. Coordinating with allies and the MoD Kaiser Alex, the decision was made to first retreat Carinthia, and then Styria in a strategic move - with the newly opened battle in Salzburg triggering several new MPP's. While Salzburg would be conquered on the 13th, this would be the last Austrian region Croatia invaded due to the threat of all MPP's that had then gone into effect.

Blocking Phase

Having halted the advance into Austria itself, Austria worked with Slovenia and Hungary to further block them. From the 13th through 16th, this was successful - until a missed block opportunity led Upper Austria - then held by Hungary - to be conquered by Croatia. Recognizing he did not have the time to handle the war, Borojevic von Bonjar announced his resignation from the office of President, handing power to Oraizan on an interim basis before she could assume the office of President through impeachment. As President, Oraizan vowed to continue the war effort, stating "I will not sell out for a hospital, I will not let our efforts thus far go to waste. I will work for an end to the war, whether it be through battles or diplomacy, to an end that is satisfactory and will ensure our independence protected from aggressors around us."[3]

With Upper Austria now in the occupation of Croatia, but Croatia back in a block, a Q5 hospital was built and placed there by Croatia with the intent of holding it "indefinitely" until they could escape from Austria to its intended target. Slowly, however, regions began to be successfully returned to Austria as Croatia placed its whole focus on retaining Upper Austria.

Battle of Upper Austria

By February 22nd, all regions previously held by Croatia had been returned - with the exception of Upper Austria. Several attempts to retake it had failed, and yet another counterattack was launched with only limited expectations of success. However, late in the battle Phoenix began to heavily tank on behalf of Austria. Over 1.4 million damage was put up - while Croatia could respond with only 1.1 million. Shockingly, Upper Austria was retaken and Croatia was completely pushed out of Austria.

Aftermath

With Croatia having lost its possessions in Austria, as well as losing all regions in Slovenia, for a short time it withdrew from its desires to expand outward. Phoenix had accomplished its goal of freeing Slovenia as a result of their involvement in the war, and Austria would go on to purchase a new hospital to replace the old. However, new tensions began to emerge as Hungary, who had possessed Burgenland to block Croatia, refused to return it to Austria. Nonetheless, the help from Phoenix led to growing positive sentiments for the alliance in Austria.

President Oraizan would not run for re-election, and Hedera - a candidate openly favoring joining Phoenix - rode this sentiment to an election victory on March 5th over the pro-non allignment candidate, bobbySAURON. However, Hedera would prove to be a Polish agent - directly leading to the Second Croatia-Austria War.
