Iain Keers is one of the senior economists in eRepublik, former multiple-time treasurer and SG of Phoenix, former President of the UK and current Secretary General of ONE

2009

Politics

Iain Keers is a former President of the United Kingdom and Treasurer/Secretary General of Phoenix. He has served twelve terms in the UK congress, as well as twenty-four terms in three countries as a Minister. Since he started his life he has been working towards strengthening The Unity Party, his first and only party since birth. He built the party from 237 members upon his accession to PP in March 2009, to a height of 825 members in January 2010. He is the author of the Economist newspaper, and economics is his passion ingame. He served as Treasurer of Phoenix from its inception to its unofficial close, saving three terms. This makes him the longest-serving Phoenix official. Upon the collapse of Phoenix Iain moved to Serbia to serve as Minister of Economics to the Kistru government, returning after the end of his term. Since then he has served as an advisor in the governments of Macedonia, the UK and Sweden, as Party President of the Unity Party and as advisor and current Secretary General of ONE.

First Congress Term

Iain Keers started his political career by running for Congress of the United Kingdom in the 25th January 2009 elections. A mere one month old, he was the youngest candidate. Glitches in eRepublik meant only three candidates stood: himself, Indiekid and Count Drakula. Iain Keers won comfortably. The first month of congress was for Iain, like most new congressmen, confusing. A great deal was going on, and in those early days of V1 legislation was incredibly complex. New legislation was regularly proposed, and congress was in many ways the power in the UK. This was partially due to the fairly balanced congress results, meaning that the President could rarely rely on a majority of congress to back them.

Second Congress Term

In February he ran again to maintain his seat, and won a landslide victory. Y&H had went from an all MDU region to a TUP region. Also elected were fellow TUP member Count Drakula and PCP member Jaden87. Jaden then betrayed his party by moving to the newly established Liberal Social Democrats Party. Iain focused his second term on assisting the MoFA Squiddy in international affairs, and inwardly attempting to introduce reforms into The Unity Party. This included some moves towards introducing the TUP Whip, the first TUP Policy Conference and the development of the Party Constitution.

Third Congress Term and PP

In March Iain ran for and won the Party Presidency of the Unity Party. He defeated friends and long-term TUP members Eadie
Tuplogo2.jpg
and Ares989, and immediately began to transform the party. During the Congress Elections he re-ran for his Y&H seat and won, coming top of the national ballot with 27 votes, which was 57% of the vote in his region. In his first month in office as TUP leader he increased membership by a third, took over the PCP, made The Unity Post the seventh most subscribed UK newspaper and helped Malta_1990 win the Presidency. The first Party Presidency was also marked with a mass defection of those who opposed the internal reforms, leaving the Party somewhat light of older players, but more single-minded in its intent. This defection paved the way for a policy of external solidarity which defines TUP to this day.

Fourth Congress Term and Minister

He was selected by the new President as Minister of Finance, one of the fastest elevations to high office in UK history. Iain had never before served government, even as an apprentice or Under-Minister. He appointed Arthur Wellesley as his second in command, and had great respect for his abilities. In those days the principle purpose of the MoF was to supply currency to the various branches, to act as a Financial regulator in the Money Market and to advise the President on issues regarding spending. In his month Iain also made the first purchase of a state company for military use. The Q3 weapons company, purchased from Lotfire formed the backbone of the new era commune based military. On the 15th of April he contested the Party Presidency and narrowly defeated North East congress member and veteran Unity Party member John Forseti.

On April 25th Iain stood once again in his beloved region as congress member. He won again, though this was his final term for a while. After his terms as Minister, PP and Congressman expired he founded the paramilitary group Camelot, and sought to indirectly reform the military. With the support of around thirty citizens, he perfected the 'Camelot Model' of military communes, which was later adapted as standard in the UK, Germany, USA and many other countries.

Return to politics

After serving for two months as leader of the Paramilitary group Camelot, Iain returned to government as Minister of Trade under President Hassan Pesaran. In his term he introduced regular monitoring and reporting on market trends,
Seal of the Ministry of Trade.png
supplied business advice to new players and considerably improved communication in the department. He went on to serve as Minister of Trade/Minister of Economics until May 2010, where he took up a semi-permanent adviser position in cabinet.

Hassan Pesaran's government was marked by a notable shift to the left. Military communes were opened in large numbers, and military expansion was built on the back of mass government nationalisation of the arms industry. Around this time the first Co-Operative Group measures were taken by Iain Keers to regulate the food market. The goal was to provide Q2 food, the minimum required by new citizens, at a price approaching minimum wage. This was eventually accomplished when prices dropped to £1 in September/October 2009. The companies are currently operating as part of Iain's joint ventures with fellow TUP member Jamesw, providing cheap food to the masses. As always, these companies are designed to produce goods most attractive to new players with low incomes.

Fifth Congress term

On the 25th of July 2009 he stood for congress in Yorkshire and Humberside once again. Although saddened that so many old friends had moved on since he was there last, he still returned to Parliament with a comfortable ten votes.

Sixth Congress term

On the 25th of August 2009 he re-stood for congress. He won alongside Indiekid, beating KaiserAlex the UKRP candidate by just one vote. On the 5th of September 2009 GLaDOS was elected from The Unity Party as President, marking the election of the fourth consecutive TUP backed President. During the month, GLaDOS defected to the UK right wing, representing a betrayal which would mark the careers of both players throughout the coming year.

Seventh Congress Term

In September Iain moved to the West Midlands region and stood against veteran UKRP congressman LordJustice. He won first place in the region and took up position there for one month. On the 18th of October Iain announced he would not be standing for congress, choosing to take another military break as a member of the PEACEKeepers.

Eighth Congress Term

In November Iain returned to congress in the West Midlands region with 21 votes, alongside FatefulDestruction from the UKRP

PEACE/Phoenix

Shortly after joining the PEACEKeepers Iain rose to officer rank, and eventually joined the PEACE community as emeritus. Thus he represented the UK as an international leader after the collapse of PEACE and the rise of Phoenix. His financial history led to him being unanimously selected nine times as Treasurer of Phoenix. During this time he has advised more than a dozen countries on financial and fiscal policy, helped design a global stimulus package to end the first great recession and became permanent emeritus of the Phoenix Strategic Command.

PEACEKeeper

Towards the end of Hassan Pesaran's second term as President, Iain asked the then retiring MoDaFA (Minister of Defence and Foreign Affairs) Glorious Failure to recommend him to PEACE as a PEACEKeeper. The PEACEKeepers were a military force made up of tanks from every nation with high IRC activity and mobility. Despite being considerably weaker than the average PEACEKeeper, and not using the gold booster lana, Iain was accepted due to his organisational and strategic abilities.

Shortly after joining, he was promoted to be a supplier for the channel, and a few days after that made a full officer, along with PEACE SG Jazar, Chebbba and other senior figures. As time passed, much of the strategic decisions regarding organisation and deployment passed to Iain, and with the resignation of Glorious Failure from his positions in PEACE and the UK, and the unstable political atmosphere, Iain was promoted to the War Room as a replacement. He represented the PEACEKeepers there, as a commander in his own right. Since that first election, Iain has always represented internationalism in Phoenix, never a single nation, despite his UK background.

Phoenix

When serious internal problems pushed Indonesia to leave PEACE, many of the senior non-governmental emeritus figures moved to form a new alliance. At the early stages, this involved discussions between the likes of Kistru, NicoSianpur, Jazar and other senior Emeritus. Iain was invited to those meetings as both a representative of the UK and as an individual. In the early days during the formation of the constitution, Iain designed and built a model for the assessment of economic strength and the taking of payments which is used to this day. His contributions meant that he was unanimously selected as Treasurer of Phoenix. He also suggested the name, which was partly inspired by the still-born alliance proposed by JerryGFL to replace ATLANTIS. Despite these negative links, the name was adopted as many felt that it provided not only a strong identity, but a warning to later generations that everything passes eventually.

Emeritus

After five terms as sole Treasurer, and two as joint-treasurer, Iain stood down. Sharing two joint terms with other players had shown him that he was tired of the role and he stood aside. However, after just one month he was asked to return by veteran emeritus Donnie Bronco. He once more stood up to the role and has now fulfilled two more months of leadership. The role involves much more than the original intention of controlling finances, and he is often called on to mediate disputes, advise on strategy and lead the alliance as a whole. Iain changed his IRC nickname to Ivan Kersovic, in honour of the Serbians who play the game.

Secretary General

On the 22nd November 2010 Iain Keers was elected as Secretary General of Phoenix. Shortly after being elected Iain began a radical reform of Phoenix and led a fightback which allowed him to lead Phoenix members to regain all of Phoenix' original regions and then launch major invasions of the neighbouring countries of Cyprus, Australia, Canada, Spain, Ireland and Ukraine. Despite great victories, tension between Hungary-Brazil and a growing friendship between Hungary and Poland led to the withdrawal of those members from Phoenix, precipitating its dissolution in January 2011. It has been replaced by two new alliances, Terra and ONE, both of which are now struggling with the same problems Phoenix faced.

Conclusions

You can read in detail my first year as a citizen in this article, which I wrote on my 1st Birthday.

2010

Party President

On the 16th of January Iain stood as Party president of his party TUP, on the five part pledge card of 1000 members, 18 congress seats, 1 president, increased media activity and a re-opening of social programs. He won by more than 100 votes and took back his seat as leader of the party. The goal was to renew and reinvigorate the party by giving it ambitious goals and a clear aim in mind- left domination of parliament and nation. In his two terms, he achieved both, though he fell short of the membership margins due to an invasion midway through his second term which effectively lost all players living in the outer regions.

Ninth Congress Term

Iain ran for congress in January in his old region of Yorkshire & Humberside. He won comfortably. In February he was selected by the President Dishmcds as Minister of Economics. He reran as Party President and won with 95% of the vote.

Tenth Congress Term

On the 25th February he ran for congress in West Midlands and took part in the 19 seat record breaking TUP victory in February. This election was the first one fought with the mass use of what we now refer to as mobile voters. More than six hundred members were contacted and more than one hundred moved to vote outside of London. Along with two seats taken in London, TUP found itself within spitting distance of an outright majority of congress, making it the most powerful of any party in the history of the UK.

Pakistan

After standing down as PP and congressman, Iain moved to Pakistan and became a citizen of the Holy Empire. Although he served there as a government advisor, he maintained his position as Minister of Economics in the UK. This meant he had the honour of being the longest-serving Phoenix Staff Member, the longest serving UK government minister and only citizen to serve as MoE of multiple countries at once. He lived in the Punjab where he divided his time between worshipping Dio Brando, eating Sandviches, writing economics texts and helping manage Phoenix members finances.

Return to the UK and Presidency

In May 2010 Iain returned from Pakistan, and regained his UK citizenship. He began to prepare for a run for the Presidency, against old nemesis GLaDOS. Despite being the underdog against the 3-term president, Iain maintained media domination throughout the campaign and the public stuck with him throughout. After an incredibly close election, Iain emerged the victor and led the UK into V2.

Iain's term was marked by three major goals. Domestic expansion, Military expansion and Economic strength. The first was accomplished by high levels of communication (daily reports) along with a redevelopment of all UK Ministries, including the MoHA. The second goal was accomplished by the partial occupation of Norway, Ireland, and the reclamation of missing UK regions lost during the war with the USA. The third goal was matched as massive investment in the economy prior to V2 showed fruit, with the UK holding out a fairly high income until the collapse shortly after the election of his successor.

After Iain's term

July to September

In July Iain supported candidate Jamesw to win the Presidency. However, a coalition of parties managed to defeat TUP resulting in John Bartlett being elected. That month the UK lost several regions, including all her overseas possessions. Iain was not a member of cabinet in this period, the first month since mid-2009 that he has been excluded. After the impeachment of the President towards the end of the month, Jamesw took over and Iain returned to cabinet.

Since then he continued his work as a government advisor.

Eleventh Congress Term

In September Iain ran for congress in the region of Auvergne, which was temporarily part of the UK, to block any other candidate from running in the easily won region. He won with two votes. That month in congress was marked by the theft of the UK military by US agents acting in conjunction with a traitor within the UK armed forces. Thus the end of the month was marked by vicious battles in the House culminating in legislation being proposed and passed limiting the military for the first time. The remainder of this term consisted of a running battle to protect the UK's assets from future mistakes, as well as legislating a removal procedure for the CGS position (Chief of the General Staff).

Royal Titles

At the end of his term in congress, the newly crowned King Woldy named him Baron Von Kersovic, the Red Baron.

Serbia

Iain has lived in Serbia twice during his life. Firstly in late October 2010, where he helped to advise and develop a Serbian sister party, the UeS. Secondly in February 2011, where he advised the Kistru government as Minister of Economics.

He is seen as having very close ties with Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria and many of the Balkan countries, and served as a Minister of Serbia when the country was a member of NWO/ONE.

2011

Iain retired from front-line international politics in 2011, preferring to focus on his personal financial interests and his party. Real life commitments have kept him occupied since then.

Fifth Party Presidency and Congress

On the 15th March 2011, Iain Keers ran for the leadership of The Unity Party for the fifth time, becoming the longest serving Party President in the history of TUP. On the 25th of March he was elected to congress, coming first in the UK on the London ballot paper.

Vice-Presidency

In May Artela was elected as Country President of the UK under The Unity Party banner. Iain agreed to be her chief advisor/VP for the duration of her term, to counter a percieved lack of experience. According to critics he played Minecraft all term. Unlike certain other VPs in the past and present, Iain did not see running the country through a puppet as being the job of a VP, and simply offered advice and help when it was asked.

Poland

On the 9th July Iain left the UK for Poland, after becoming disillusioned with the childish state of the UK political scene. Since then it has only got worse.

As Iain was looking for a new home, prominent Polish citizen Bernard75 offered him a home with his military unit, Bluerose. As he had never been to Poland in the past (with them being an enemy most of his eLife) Iain accepted and served alongside the Polish army, bearing their unit avatar.

Macedonia

Iain served as an economic advisor to the government of Macedonia in the month of September

Sweden

On 15th October 2011 Iain moved to Sweden where he is currently living as a citizen. On the 5th of November the President of Sweden Parsons1 asked Iain to join the Swedish government as a special advisor.

ONE

After the collapse of Phoenix, Iain decided that the best interests of the UK laid with its former allies in the ONE alliance. Although the UK has historic ties to France and Germany, their alignment with the USA and Canada (as well as Ireland) made any sort of alliance with them impossible. Serbia and Macedonia had proved themselves to be strong friends of the UK in the past, and Iain took the position of leader of the proONE camp in the UK.

Although the UK had joined Terra in the first round of discussions, Iain was convinced that this wasn't the best place for the UK to be. Over time it became apparent this was correct, as Terra countries allied with long term enemies Ireland, and interfered in the war on their behalf. Subsequently the UK left Terra and became aligned with ONE as a proONE country.

As time went on, Iain became part of the ONE NightWatch project, arming and fighting with night-zone soldiers from across the ONE Hegemony. He slowly gained access in ONE, first as a representative of the Nightwatch, then as an advisor. In October he was elected as part of a DIR team (Director, Internal Relations) for ONE and gained access to the ONE HQ. In November, he was unanimously selected by the ONE member states to lead them as Secretary General. He was the first SG not from a ONE member state, though he does technically hold eSwedish citizenship.

Economics

Iain Keers is the founder and Editor of the Economist weekly newspaper, which covers news from all over the world. Economically, Iain has made a journey in eRepublik. Originally a champion of market economics, he has grown disillusioned with the failings of capitalism in eRepublik. Upon close investigation, he decided that a mixed economy is the strongest economy to have in eRepublik. Since then he began work on a project called The Socialist Challenge, which brings together many different socialist theories to create a blueprint model of the ideal society. Part one of the socialist challenge was released alongside Hassan's manifesto.

He founded several economics groups, think tanks and special project groups over the years, and is credited with developing many of the economic models in use today. He is the author of several influential articles relating to the economics of the game, which can be found mostly within his paper.

Iain is the joint owner (with jamesw), of Dastardly Corporation. Dastardly Corp is the UK's largest home-grown corporation and currently contains 74 companies. The net income for Dastardly Corporation in all it's ventures (company and otherwise) averages as roughly equal to that of the UK government.

Military

Iain never participated in any UK armed forces division during his early life. After initially signing up for the Royal Navy he was never approached and thus has only ever fought as a citizen. On the 22nd of April he created Camelot, a new military force.
Lancelot's Journals is a recruitment newspaper for the UK Military Regiment Camelot. It is written by company leader and soldier Iain Keers.

On the 24th July Iain signed up to the Royal Guard, with some help from the Minister of Defence and Foreign Affairs Dishmcds. He remained there for some time, before giving up due to the inactivity of the regiment. He served for some time in the PEACEKeepers, and helped set up and command the Phoenix mobile armies. He was also an Able-Rate in the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom. He served for a long time as a member of the UK Special Forces/Elite forces, and is still helping them.

He is currently a member of the Bluerose Family.

This soldier has been Mentioned in Despatches by the UK Military.

Media

The Economist is the newspaper owned by Iain Keers. After the admin purge there are over 2000 readers subscribed to this newspaper.
