A new Dawn

Anyone with a complain should list it there --Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 16:59, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Use default picture

If there is "picture= |" (like on many citizen pages) it creates imagemap error witch looks ugly. If possible, template should put default image there if no picture is specified. --Icon-Finland.png sampo555 | Talk to me! 17:46, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Previous Template Code

MiniBill, does the code for the old template still exist or have you completely erased it when you replaced it with the new coding? -Chris Stanwick 20:50, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Admins (and only them) have complete access to the old template revisions --Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 21:07, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Where is the template?

Uhm, yeah, where is it? --QWERTY95 18:15, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

Military rankings

Military rankings no longer work. No matter what rank you have - it changes them all to "Private" unless you switch over to the new Citizen template. --Icon-Australia.png Timeoin| Say G'Day to Timeoin 06:18, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Can you link me a broken profile? --Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 21:07, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
Sure. Its any citizen page that has not been switched over to the new citizen template yet. Random example: Dajuliani. --Icon-Australia.png Timeoin| Say G'Day to Timeoin 01:47, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
The fix is essentially moving from |rank = {{{1}}} to |military rank = {{{1}}}. It's a pretty simple fix. However it'd be faster to just fix the template's code. Icon-Australia.png - Jameson L. Tai talk 19:10, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
Correct. Template code has already been fixed --Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 23:35, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
It still does not display correctly. Example: Zamrg. --Belea2008 08:25, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
Must be that {{Rank| doesnt work will with this new template --Icon-Australia.png Timeoin| Say G'Day to Timeoin 08:57, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
You're right. Unfortunately Rank must be manually removed from every citizen page using it :| (as soon as admins implement a working massregex it will be fixed massively) --Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 16:50, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

It came to my mind that could it be possible to fix this with {{#switch}}? --Icon-Finland.png sampo555 | Talk to me! 15:49, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

Its already been fixed - Abedecian ~ Flag-UK.jpg Talk to me and you get cake! Cake.png 11:22, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
I meant if there is {{Rank}} on some page it brokes the Rank (Example). --Icon-Finland.png sampo555 | Talk to me! 17:02, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Nope, you have to manually change every one, or get the admins to get a bot to do it. - Abedecian ~ Flag-UK.jpg Talk to me and you get cake! Cake.png 22:54, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

Positions

As well, a lot of Political positions no longer show up on my page. Now it only shows the first 5, not 10. Is this supposed to happen? --Icon-Australia.png Timeoin| Say G'Day to Timeoin 06:18, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Recent Changes to New Template

I'd like to ask why the following were edits were made: http://wiki.erepublik.com/index.php?title=Template:Citizen&diff=281638&oldid=281034

Namely, I'm asking why the Economic module was removed and the list of wars and RWs taken off.

In addition, I'd like to propose an addition to this template. It is the addition of military offices into the template. In the old citizen template, people used the political office section to describe their military positions. However, it seems out of place now that the section header has a "Politics" header slapped on it. I'm suggesting that a similar format to {{Citizen/Politics}} protocol be used so we don't have any further debugging, just renaming the sections to distinguish between the two.

Thanks. Icon-Australia.png - Jameson L. Tai talk 19:15, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

The economy section, for most people would require frequent updating and would have a lot of red links. Many people, especially those who move around a lot with wars change jobs a lot. In some countries, people job hop. This would require vigilant and quick updating of the citizen pages.... and lets face it: It aint gonna happen. I would allow it back ONLY if it were to that you were the General Manager of list organizations... In long time ago discussions with agentcheiftain, this section was to be hidden. Also is it relevant for people to know where you worked?
I wouldn't be against military offices, but you need to define the parameters? What is a military office? This also requires the appropriate pages to be created to avoid red links and regularity in creation of pages. What do you do with how pages have been done in the past, are you going to edit all of those wiki pages?
I asked for the war section to be removed because it put too much data in the template. The template should provide a quick snapshot of who a person is and their accomplishments. Every war/battle is tedious and not important in a snapshot. If we put so much info into the template then what will people write about? Already we have a problem with people NOT WRITING ANYTHING on their pages and just using a template. I had also asked AgentCheiftain to remove this section in earlier discussions. If you want to detail your battle exploits, by all means, do so in the text of your article. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 20:00, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
Cool, thanks for the explanation. I'm inclined to agree with you on the economy module, but I do agree that General Managers should be included.
Military offices are essentially pretty self-explanatory. Most organized military/paramilitary units have officer positions in which they serve a role that is above and beyond a simple grunt. In most instances you can refer to my character article, I've still got all of my military offices inside my Politics section.
On the War/RW section being removed, I'm also inclined to agree with you, but generally the body of the text would include military highlights, which is probably easier to get a "snapshot" by including this list in the military module of the citizen template. Icon-Australia.png - Jameson L. Tai talk 20:21, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
Also, what happened to the donate, report, and wiki user links to the citizen template? Icon-Australia.png - Jameson L. Tai talk/Deputy Marshal of the eAustralian DropBears 20:23, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
No one would use that section as "highlights". Seriously, people here would list every damn thing. As far as the report, donate, and other links, they were useless and it had already been discussed that these would be removed. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 21:39, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
I don't know... I just think that we're watering down the new citizen template so much by removing one module after another... that the functionality and realistic difference between the two are so small that we probably wouldn't even have noticed if it weren't for the color changes... :\ Icon-Australia.png - Jameson L. Tai talk/Deputy Marshal of the eAustralian DropBears 01:54, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
Do you mind linking me to the discussions so I don't ask the same questions over? Thanks. Icon-Australia.png - Jameson L. Tai talk/Deputy Marshal of the eAustralian DropBears 01:54, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
I would like to see that as well --Icon-Australia.png Timeoin| Say G'Day to Timeoin 02:43, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
I searched the archives and Agent's talk page. I can't find the discussion. I think we talked about it on IRC. The difference between templates shouldn't be that great because we have to have compatibility with the old one so legacy information can fit into it. Also remember, the new fields of the template are not populating on user pages... you have to do that yourself. The biggest change was how the template LOOKED so that it looked more like eRepublik. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 18:51, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
This isn't to look sarcastic, negative or anything of that sort, but for future reference, I'd feel better if these discussions were taken place on a discussion page on here instead of IRC. I understand the issues revolving around IRC and real-time code fixing when you're collaborating on IRC, they do the same thing and face the same issues on Wikipedia vs. #wikipedia-en on Freenode. However, there should always be a discussion record of the rest of us who weren't present in IRC may weigh in on the situation. Wikipedia also has a policy that issues discussed on IRC may not be passed as policies enforced on Wikipedia without discussion and voting on a Wiki discussion page or Wiki-space page. Icon-Australia.png - Jameson L. Tai talk/Deputy Marshal of the eAustralian DropBears 20:02, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
I agree and totally understand. If you want something added back in we can always discuss. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 20:19, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
Well, honestly I don't want to flip out old history, but I wouldn't mind adding my two cents in if other editors want to do this. Icon-Australia.png - Jameson L. Tai talk/Deputy Marshal of the eAustralian DropBears 20:23, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

Do you mind linking me to the discussions so I don't ask the same questions over?

--Belea2008 07:40, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

I must agree with the point of military positions, as a snapshot it would still be, but if the person desires they will write, limiting a template doesn't directly encourage people adding text content - Abedecian 11:18, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Color??

There is no default color on Template:Citizen/doc. We need to discuss... What is the blue that is being used? Do we want to even ALLOW people to change the color of their templates? --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 20:21, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

I'll take a look some time tonight as to what code they used. Icon-Australia.png - Jameson L. Tai talk/Deputy Marshal of the eAustralian DropBears 20:23, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
As the code is at the moment people can change their templates' color. Removing that option, or changing default color, is easy. If you need to just ask me. --Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 17:47, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

There is a problem with color changing. It doesn't default to orinigal color if you put empty "border" or "color" variables in your template. Example. I also agree with removing option of changing color. --Icon-Finland.png sampo555 | Talk to me! 15:22, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

Its a nice option, but is a not really that necessary and for the case of uniformity I think it would be best to remove it. - Abedecian 11:12, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Closjure

If no one objects I'll protect the template (for obvious reasons) in two days {EDIT: misspell is voluntary :) }--Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 17:47, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

Objection Citizen template is crucial for Wiki Engineers to help tweak templates. As an Engineer, I have helped fix some of the syntax problems with this new citizen template's transition. I don't think protecting this template would be a good idea. Icon-Australia.png - Jameson L. Tai talk/Deputy Marshal of the eAustralian DropBears 19:26, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
So you suggest a delay? Cause the Counter-Objection is that a wrong edit can cause massive damage Special:MostLinkedTemplates --Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 20:47, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
Rebuttal: (as I refuse to call it counter-counter objection...:\) The Engineer usergroup, containing all of two people, were given to users who understood the structure of the eRepublik Wiki so that they may gain access to edit templates. Protecting high-traffic pages and templates is the right call... from regular users. However, depriving engineers from doing their jobs make the Engineer usergroup completely pointless. Those of us who understand template coding, syntax, (and quite frankly... how to fix template errors when high-traffic templates are deployed before proper debugging and portability issues were fixed) are not here harm this wiki. We're here to help. If you're going to insist on editprotect=admin all high value templates that actually matter in this wiki, you may as well propose to rid the usergroup completely. ZING! --Icon-Australia.png Timeoin| Say G'Day to Timeoin 07:10, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
Seriously though, I do not agree with making it so that the engineers cannot edit this template. Speaking of the massive damage that a wrong edit can do - Banning IP addresses is something only the SysOps can do. 3 or 4 times now, they have done a "wrong edit" (i.e. banning 127.0.0.1), and noone has been able to edit the Wiki for hours/days. --Icon-Australia.png Timeoin| Say G'Day to Timeoin 07:13, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
I must agree, as this template is still in its youth and need updating until it matches the well established templates. - Abedecian 11:10, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Got it. Anyway, Engineer group is not only two people afaik --Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 07:01, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

Random color scheming

Until a standardized color scheme is agreed by the community, random changes to the citizen template should not be allowed. Icon-Australia.png - Jameson L. Tai talk/Deputy Marshal of the eAustralian DropBears 00:27, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Squadron

Does the squadron have to create an automatic link? I know many armies have their own wiki pages, but aren't different squads usually explained there? In my opinion the automatic link should either be removed or changed to, for example, [[Pakistani_Peace_Corps#The Pakistani Special Forces|Pakistani Special Forces]]. So it would pick up the link from the army and add #squad|squad after it. Having military squad in this template is a nice little detail but the link I doubt will be needed. Any thoughts?--Icon-Finland.png Kuhaa|sTalk to me! 09:15, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

In those cases, you may often use {{{!}}} to do it... like Pakistani_Peace_Corps#The Pakistani Special Forces{{{!}}}Pakistani Special Forces to do the job. However, there are cases like country name and other flag-ball or other syntax-related category or similar template syntax that breaks the template. {{{!}}} should only be used for the political offices at the moment as a general rule of thumb. Icon-Australia.png - Jameson L. Tai talk/Deputy Marshal of the eAustralian DropBears 21:07, 8 May 2010 (UTC)
Use {{!}}. If it doesn't work for some template, and you think it should, drop me a line --Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 20:37, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

+1 I like it, I know why you don't want it to be a link, but I personally think it should, because if you are anything like me, you will create the page to get rid of the redness off the page and I dislike external links from wiki - Abedecian ~ Flag-UK.jpg Talk to me and you get cake! Cake.png 17:16, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

There should always be a level of quality that should be maintained in our article content. Creating a subpar article just to rid one redlink is not really a proper reason why an article should be created. However, again if you do want to create a link, just slap the square brackets on and you got yourself a link... - Jameson L. I dunno, I am not the most gifted of writer (far from it), I normally {{stub}} most things I do to begin with and then go back and add a little at a time, its the fact that its started and ready to be expanded on that is important - Abedecian ~ Flag-UK.jpg Talk to me and you get cake! Not really a big problem as far as I'm concerned. If you want it to link to a page, then do it. I put a few extra links on my {{Citizen}}, such as the region I lived in --Emerick 20:52, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

MiniBill, you're just asking the same question when there was already consensus not to admin protect this template. Until there's enough consensus to overturn that earlier community decision, the previous decision stands. - Jameson L. Fixed errors

I fixed the error when you put an image to template that is non-existent by completely removing imagemap. The template currently uses #ifexist parser to see if the image is uploaded to wiki. If the file isn't loaded, it will return File:Unknown Person.jpg to the template. The link has been made with link=| -property in the image. If anyone has something against this change, please share your thoughts with me and others. --Icon-Finland.png sampo555 | Talk 15:06, 13 September 2010 (UTC)
