February Clean Up

HeadlessChicken.jpg Think of it as a Pre-Spring Cleaning... One of the biggest issues we have with the wiki are pages that are not finished. What is most frustrating is that these pages could be finished with just a few minutes of work and just need an image, template, proper translation or just a few lines of text. I would like every editor to start making an effort to deal with these pages. Starting in on February 15, deletion templates will start going on pages to remove low content pages. What you can do to help:

  • Check the pages you have created, are there any notices on them? Address the issues and remove the notice. To find the pages you created see Special:Contributions and type in your user name in the search
  • Spread the word. Do you know other wiki contributors who aren't as active as they once were? Remind them to check on their contributions and warn them about this.
  • Review these pages Is there anything you can do to finish the page?

For New or Inexperienced Editors

DO NOT BE AFRAID!
We are here to help! Look to the left and check out the New Users page. This will give you some basic info about the wiki and link you to all of our guides and templates. I will also work to be on our Rizon IRC channel #Wiki Room to provide assistance and I encourage the other Uber Editors to do so also. You can also leave messages on our User Talk pages. Check out this article too!

The room is now added to my auto-join list --Icon-Australia.png Timeoin|Say G'Day to Timeoin 14:35, 17 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks

I thank everyone in advance for their work in this effort --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 13:31, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

Update

Pages are starting to be removed. Warnings were placed on pages and in many cases I sent a PM to the user. NO MERCY!!!! --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 14:49, 17 February 2010 (UTC)

Seems evil, but you did give them a chance first. --Icon-Australia.png Timeoin|Say G'Day to Timeoin 14:57, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
Just making sure that are we supposed to send PM's or was it just your good will? As you said, those pages still had to be deleted so I guess it's ok just to smack Warning and Deletion templates all over the pages? --Icon-Finland.png Kuhaa|sTalk to me! 12:32, 18 February 2010 (UTC)

Updates/Improvements

New Congress Law

  • Name of the Law = National chat room
  • only congress members can propose it (like for other laws, there can't be 2 laws of the same type proposed in the same time)
  • how it would look like: http://wiki.erepublik.com/index.php/File:National_Chat_Room_-_Congress_Law.JPG
  • the congress member that propose it has to enter an id in the box (check "proposing the law" jpg)
  • "error" messages":
    • if the id is not a higher than 0 integer: "Please retype the correct ID"
    • if the id does not exist: "There is no chat room with the ID you have entered"
    • if the id is the one of the current national chat room: "The chat room with the ID you have entered is the current national one"
    • if the id represents a chatroom located in another country: "Only chat rooms from (country) can be set as national"
    • if the id represent a "private" chat room (protected by a password): "Only a public chat room can be set as national"
  • how the voting will look like: http://wiki.erepublik.com/index.php/File:National_Chat_Room_-_Voting_the_Law.JPG
  • congress members and the president can vote the law
  • the chat room proposed to become national cannot be edited to become "private" until the law is rejected
  • the "private" feature (any chat owner can set his chat room from public to private) will have color grey and the following text will be displayed near the "inactive" option: "This chat room is being proposed to be set as the national chat room. It cannot be locked with a password"
  • the law will be listed law in the list of laws a congress member can propose
  • "alerts":
    • to the previous owner of the national chat room - text: Your chat room is no longer assigned as national chat room.
    • to the current owner of the national chat room - text: The Congress has decided to assign your chat room as national chat room.
  • event with link to the law related to the residence AND citizenship country - will be displayed in national tab of latest events:
    • this law has been proposed - text: A new national chat room was proposed in (country).
    • this law has been accepted - text: (country) now has a new national chat room.
    • this law has been rejected - text: The proposal for a new national chat room in (country) was rejected.
  • effects if the law is accepted:
    • the links to the national chat rooms from the following pages become the one proposed in the accepted law
    • in society tab:
      • instead of “Featured Chat Room” , the section title will be “National Chat Room”
      • this is the only place where the real name of the chosen chatroom is being displayed
    • the new national chat room cannot be edited to become "private" as long as it is set as national
    • the private option will have color grey and this text will be displayed near the "inactive" option: "This is the current national chat room. It cannot be locked with a password"
    • If the previous national room is owned by a citizen (not admin) it can now be set as "private"
    • If the previous national room is not owned by a citizen (current situation), it is deleted

eRepublik Shop Project on hold

The following project: shop.erepublik.com is officially put on hold (the link will also be removed from the footer of eRepublik). Please remove any references to it from the Wiki. --Belea2008 18:03, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

New Welcome Message

I accordance with the discussion above, I would like to suggest a new welcome message....

Welcome to eRepublik Official Wiki!
The Wiki depends on quality contributions from users like you! Here are some things to remember:

And remember, if you ever need any assistance, check out the sidebar on the left for help with Editing, Policies, or Templates. Again, welcome and have fun! --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 23:59, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

January Rewards

eRepublik:Rewards/2010/January Sorry it took me a while to get these up... --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 16:20, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

New modules

As many of you must have noticed, an Insider article about new economic module was published today. As pleased as I am to see the game improve, I can't help thinking about the amount of work this will pour on us. New products, Happiness, new professions, customization and time management mean there are bunch of pages to update, rewrite, create and link to each other. There's pretty much nothing we can do now, but I want to make sure everyone is aware of this. Especially people not writing in English, as translations have the habit of becoming outdated. And this is only the economic module we're talking about. New military module is also coming, and we don't know if admins have even revealed everything about economic module. Luckily we still got plenty of time to get prepared. --Icon-Finland.png Kuhaa|sTalk to me! 20:27, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

I'll also be around. The "plan" with the Wiki and the new economy/military modules - offer to SysOps information so that the Wiki is updated in the same time as the new modules are "revealed" to the general "public" (through Insiders). --Belea2008 08:02, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

Redirects

From time to time I've been making some redirects just to make formatting articles (for the editors) and finding them (for the readers) much easier. However, most, if not all, redirects I make are deleted later on. Why is that? --SpeedKing 10:07, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

I do think we need to rethink the redirects system. A good example, yesterday my brother (who also plays eRepublik - just in case I am reported for multis) was complaining when he wanted to get to the World War III article. He tried searching WW3, WWIII, World War 3, none of which even have World War III in the list of matches... If I hadn't been there and known the wiki, i.e. he was an ordinary player he would have probably left and given up on the wiki for good.
Another good example is the Community Communication page. I know it is shown at the top of the wiki for unsigned in users, but anyone trying to find their national IRC would be hard pressed to reach that page. Searching for National forum, US Forum (for example) should lead you there.
In my opinion, common phrases such as WW3, XP, Health, IRC etc, things a new player would look up, should redirect to the right articles. --Martin23230 11:04, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
Hmm... Some of the things could be implemented, but some of them can't be implemented. For example, Speed King had some category redirects - there is no point of having category redirects. About some common phrases, I had a suggestion month ago with the similar thing. But I would rather create a disimbig pages which could lead to more places (For example Health could lead to Wellnes and Hospital), while for abbreviations... This is a long story. I believe that this new redirect system could be a project for March, but we should first try to decrease the number of STUB and OUTDATED articles. If we continue to work on one million projects, we won't get far. --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 11:30, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
We cannot deal with redirects until we deal with other more pressing issues. Stub, Formatting, and Outdated articles, implementation of the naming policy, etc etc. Also, at some point we were supposed to have a better search function for the wiki...--QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 15:07, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
What about shortcuts? They could actually be useful, it's such a pain writing Whateverpolicymightbeinquestion when it could be done with Whateverpolicymightbeinquestion. And it's not just linking them for someone, sometimes I myself need to check something. I'm asking because some of shortcuts are in use but some have been deleted. --Icon-Finland.png Kuhaa|sTalk to me! 12:45, 12 February 2010 (UTC)

Waste of time until he gets banned/account deleted (PLEASE DON'T DO A MASS BAN. D= ). The bots should be able to revert all much quicker. You can do it yourself tho, if you wanna challenge him hehehehe. =D. I once made mass additions like a bot. Quite satisfying. Got a cookie too. =P--~Laurana "Psi"~ (My Whiteboard) 17:35, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
It seems he's stopped blanking pages for now. I'd put him to eternal sleep but I'm afraid I'd mess it up somehow and I'm not going to stay online for long. What exactly happened before? All I can see from log is that Bill blocked his account with "account creation disabled" checked, that shouldn't block you all should it? Anyway, good job everyone who reverted his edits! --Icon-Finland.png Kuhaa|sTalk to me! 19:50, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
I have given him a permanent ban. After a 2 hour warning for his first round of vandalism (too light imho) he comes back and starts it all over again. I am not dealing with that bullshit here. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 20:00, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
I agree he had it coming. The 1 day ban I gave him was to give myself time to contact other Sysops as it seems everybody got blocked because of it. I'm talking with Psi at IRC and it seems the thing described above has happened again - only Sysops are able to edit. --Icon-Finland.png Kuhaa|sTalk to me! 20:04, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
I changed the parameters of ban. Try again. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 20:14, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
Still doesn't work. IP-block must be broken so it affects 127.0.0.1 that refers to everybody's own computer(I asked Squirrel and that's what he thinks or then I misunderstood. But we all agree that somewhere something is broken). So I guess this is not in our hands. --Icon-Finland.png Kuhaa|sTalk to me! 20:25, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

This is not funny at all any more. Is it possible to give him FPs on eRepublik? Because this is not only attack on wiki, this is attack on eRepublik (wiki is a part of eRepublik). Thanks, but I will not be creating ANY redirects. Problem can be easily fixed at its source. I just spent 2 months removing redirects and the links to the pages linking to redirects.
I am currently playing a Korean Pirate game. I ran into a problem, opened a direct online link/Chat to a developer... problem was patched in 2 minutes. The actual fix for the problem was uploaded at next weekly maintenance. (...and , yes, it is a free game). A far cry from BugRepublik, where it took 3 months to enable my Contact page, so that I could report Bugs and Multis. Respectfully, ----Hrvat User_talk:Hrvat 23:02, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
Maybe eRep needs to hire Koreans? The real issue is priority. Wiki linking is simply NOT a priority with eRep HQ. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 21:24, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

Former members

Well, I saw that someone created this category, and noticed that there aren't categories for former party members. I know that most of the times it doesn't apply to exist, but I just think of a possible that it might be useful: dead parties that had some significance, and their members (significant amount) just moved around or something like that.
An example: this party die a year ago, but within their members there were almost every older citizen of Chile, some others important citizens of Argentina, the party itself even put a president there, and just not to mention that one of their members later even got elected as president of Spain and is their current MoD, XD... that is a huuuuuge historial, and a lot of people that were former members of it.
I know that the linked category is not the case, and I'm going to add a deletion template to it, but just wanted to know what do you think about it--Icon-Chile.png Purohueso (talk if you want) 07:00, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

My two cents worth is that it would be worth looking into. The whole point of the wiki is to enable the finding out of historical information that cannot be found in-game. This meets that criteria admirably. --Icon-Australia.png Timeoin|Say G'Day to Timeoin 13:48, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
no. It is hard enough to manage categories as it is. Honestly, I don't think "Member of..." Categories are that useful either. Old party membership should be noted in the text of the article or in the text of the historical party page. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 14:16, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Hmm ... yeah, thats what i meant. It would be rather cool to have a list in there that listed some of their members. --Icon-Australia.png Timeoin|Say G'Day to Timeoin 14:29, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Well, actually I do it, at least for already deceased parties (see PTC & PRa), but in those cases there are no more than 4-5 people..., the idea goes more with a bigger amount, maybe a limit between "just in the page" and "maybe you need a category", but those people has to had some importance..., not the regular member who just die of boredom some months later..., and well, obviously it applying when there are those citizen and party pages already created within the wiki, and not just stub things. Also, it could be "applied" after a discussion, as the ones for religions for example, to see if really that criteria has been fulfilled --Icon-Chile.png Purohueso (talk if you want) 17:06, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
No. There are many - more urgent projects that require our attention. New category for past members of a long dead party is not needed. ----Hrvat User_talk:Hrvat 00:06, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
Personally I see the historical sentimentality of the issue, but don't see the historical relevance. I would vote no. Icon-Hong Kong.png - Jameson L. Tai talkIcon-China.png 06:30, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Minor problem with LangMenu

I don't know why it has been doing it, but at least the last 5 times I had created a language version (adding template and category), it just doesn't show the flag, while in the english version it appears. I write LangMenu, and I have to edit it and put a space between the 2 things to make it work. Ok, that would solve the situation, just write with a space between and it's all, but the problem is that when I do so..., it doesn't work, and I have to edit to remove the space, which makes it work.
Somebody can explain me what happens?..., or at least tell me an unfalible method so I don't have to minor edit each time I create a translation,
Thanks beforehand --Icon-Chile.png Purohueso (talk if you want) 23:00, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
PS: Just to ask, since I'm talking about LangMenu..., why there is a pakistani flag there?, there isn't any article translated on... punjabi?, urdu?, whatever language the flag makes reference to, nor category, probably no translator, and even could be that anyone speaks that on eR (that, at least, would use the wiki).
PS2: I think there is also a problem with the roll template, just look at the distance between the lines, and what it does now:  And I just didn't put a br between the template and the text, :O

Fortunately I believe I have answers to all of your questions. There's nothing wrong with LangMenu, it just takes some time to update. It happened to me all the time when I was translating pages to Finnish and it still does. So don't worry, it should be alright. Though the time it takes to update might vary so be patient. Pakistani flag is there because AgentChieftain(?) put it there. The addition didn't follow the policy and no one has even requested that language to be added so it's a mystery for the rest of us also. I recon someone contacted him about it but I don't know if he has replied. And I believe I have now fixed Template:Roll. Look here to see what I did. We had a similar issue back then with mrgreen, though it could have been due to image map I created. Don't remember. :D But I hope I helped you solve your problmes. --Icon-Finland.png Kuhaa|sTalk to me! 23:09, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
Ok, so I should wait for a few minutes and check later if the thing get fixed on his own..., I should had asked before..., well whatever, :P
I thought that would have been what happened there, I was about to check who did that, but you already solved that question, XD Well, I just can thought of 2 options, besides searching what language does it refer:
  • It get removed and it remains as a good anecdote for the future, XD
  • Or someone tries to find someone who speaks it on eR, so he do something about it (and maybe bring more people).

I think that maybe an article on ePakistan talking about it might found someone.

I vote for keeping it as is, just for the lulz :D (anyway, lol, how much time has that flag been here and no one got the fact that er pakistan wasn't inhabited by rl pakistan ppl) --Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 10:23, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
January 6..., even before macedonian, :O..., but just hope that some people doesn't bother us due to it, :P--Icon-Chile.png Purohueso (talk if you want) 13:40, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
Well, even if it's in LangMenu doesn't mean the language is officially accepted. So any articles written in that language will be moved to contributor's sandbox. But it's true it might provoke some people to demand their language to be added. But still, I'd say let's leave Pakistani there as a joke as long as it doesn't cause any problems. --Icon-Finland.png Kuhaa|sTalk to me! 21:40, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
