Since yesterday, I cannot upload images. Does it work? Thanks --Keihan 15:57, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Solved! --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 11:55, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Categories

I would like to get some opinions. I have noticed some categories appearing in languages other than English and I was wondering what everyone thought of these. In terms of wiki manageability, I can see them becoming a major problem in the future. The main language of the wiki is English, thus I think the categories need to be in English. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 04:06, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

You mean all the articles should be in English, but for the tutorial, we give translation in some languages? I saw some article written in local language, while majority written in English. For some reasons I agree, and disagree for other reason. Should we put two languages? (one is local, and the compulsory one is English) ~ Log 22:28, 03 March 2009 (UTC)
She means these pages Special:Categories and that some categories are using non-English headings e.g. Category:Politika. What is being proposed that despite the language of the article, the categories themselves should stay English only.--~✭βƓЪ✭~ 12:03, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for clarifying BGBW! I have no problem with individual pages being translated. I just don't want category names being translated. I suggest that pages in a language other than english be categorized by the language.--QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 19:04, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

+1 As this will help group related articles together. Also we are being overrun with categories.--~✭βƓЪ✭~ 12:03, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

LangMenu in Categories so that we have something like:

 • Category:Military - pages that are in English and are related to Military
 • Category:Military/Hrvatski - similar pages written in Croatian (the short introduction will be written also in Croatian)

Is it possible? --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 09:37, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

 • I don't know if that will work, besides,it doesn't solve the problem. We could still possibly have 15 military categories. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 04:43, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Bump

First of all Category:International Pages must go - it's becoming large and besides the fact that those pages have LangMenu in them, they are from different categories and have nothing else in common (therefore I consider it not to be a helpful category). Secondly, I consider that every MAJOR AND IMPORTANT category should have a subcategory for every language (in that language).

 • Example 1: I reach Category:Playing the game and I want to find all the pages that are written in my native language from this category. I press on the Croatian subcategory and I see a friendly message and all the pages (which help me play the game) that are translated in Croatian.
 • Example 2: I reach Category:Citizens and I want to see all the pages in Romanian of my fellow players. I press on the Romanian subcategory and find them.

Or, in reverse, from a page written in my native language (Croatian, Romanian, etc.) I want to reach a subcategory with pages written in that native language. What do you think? --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 12:18, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Category:Regions_of_Croatia - the pages written in Croatian should be in a subcategory. Pages written in different languages in the same category/subcategory are very confusing... --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 12:25, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
I see where you are going with this... I find it imperative that we resolve this ASAP before the problem gets any bigger. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 04:36, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
OK, I think that I know on what are you aiming, but let me try to see...
 • Example 1: Category Igraj igru[1] should be the subcategory for Playing the game[2] because in fact it is the translation of category Playing the game?
If yes, then the only thing that I must do is to create a subcategory Igraj igru, and not category as it is now. If yes is the right answer, then I completely agree with you Belea! ;) --AndyCro Croatia If you have a suggestion... 13:46, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
You have read my mind. Have fun at creating categories! :D--Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 15:02, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
+1 for subcategories --Mini "Template" Bill Italian in the deep core bother me! 19:28, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
But that gets to an earlier question about categories in languages other than English.... --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 03:53, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
If they are helpful for citizens, I have nothing against them. Rephrasing: we will not have 15 Military categories, we will have one Military category and 14 subcategories (one for each language). Do you understand what I mean? (the other solution would be having different wikis for different languages - like Wikipedia has) --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 09:40, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
I don't think we are big enough to have language segregation (yet). Here is an idea: On pages with a language other than English, create a category with the language name e.g. . It would be great if we could automate this through the lang template. but this would at least create a basic category of for each language pages. What do people think about that? --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 04:37, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
Nice idea. Signed! :D --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 17:22, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
Conclusion: "Categories on other languages will have only category with the name of language, but we will not put any other categories like "Economy" or "Politics, just: . If yes, I am going to do this in every other Croaitan article. I will remove category or categories in English and add " --AndyCro Croatia If you have a suggestion... 23:37, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
Go for it! --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 09:34, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
And now I have another idea... Can we create subcategories on Croatian for ? This should ease up searching Croatian pages a lot, especially if I all current Croatian Categories add to Category:Hrvatski. But unfortunately this will not decrease the number of subcategories. --AndyCro Croatia If you have a suggestion... 09:44, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
I have made all of your croatian categories subcategories of - Lets see how this works. However. This means that I entrust to you that all Croatian language pages are categorized properly. Because I can't understand the language, I can no longer be a judge. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 05:25, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Original country names

Doors need to open faster

Time is valuable. Information is valuable. We need more and a lot more editors/authors in this wiki. New editors are coming in slowly, people get tired of waiting for approval so they forgot they signed up for the wiki. A lot of pages lack information because nobody is writing them or don't know, yet there are many people out there who knows something and can help improve pages. For example outdated region pages, country pages, takeovers, wars (especially this) etc. What do others think? A lot of people should of course not be allowed in all at once because then there would be no control, but people should get in faster or maybe have access to wiki already but then make punishments a bit harsher. --Aryamehr Flag of Iran talk 22:22, 3 March 2009 (UTC) PS: Is there any statistic for active editors?

Another problem is all the character pages. I think people are afraid to edit a profile that isn't of them so we end up with a lot of stubs. Also not everyone likes digging up old quotes from forum posts and articles to add facts to pages. Maybe we need to add some motivation to it. At the moment we have the awards system but only the regulars pay attention to that. More Wiki mentions on the main website wouldn't go amiss.--~✭βƓЪ✭~ 22:27, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
Rewards are a great idea, but it would need Admin's support. The best we can currently do is give them a Cookie, and I don't think many editors would be motivated to invest time into the wiki in exchange for a mere template. - –Dr. AgentChieftain Flag of the Crescent and Star PPP! B / C / D / F / P / S 09:58, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
Edits for things like countries, regions, and wars should be automated. I remember hearing rumblings of Admin creating a bot that uses the eRepublik API to automatically update these kinds of pages, but this never came to fruition.
Biographies that aren't their own are probably thought to be taboo by the new editors. We can probably take a step towards eliminate this hindrance by adding something to the Citizen Page Tutorial about this, and possibly through a forum post of some kind. Nevertheless, I think that active players' biographies will always be this way since there isn't much holding back said players from writing their biographies on their own. - –Dr. AgentChieftain Flag of the Crescent and Star PPP! B / C / D / F / P / S 09:58, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
We can also set an example by editing other biographies, especially if they are dead or banned. I did my part Rockman_9 :awesome:.--~✭βƓЪ✭~ 17:40, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
I don't think it is so much that we need "more editors" we just need the current editors to get more involved! (as well as adding new ones). People seem to get a wiki account to write about themselves. I will brainstorm some ideas (while on painkillers) to think of ways to motivate and get people excited and working. Something like a "Wiki Week" where we see how many stubs we can remove during a week or something like that. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 01:58, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
The team changed the Special:RequestAccount page and removed the redundant Help page associated with it. --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 17:49, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
Waiting period (before approving/rejecting accounts) is now 24 hours (instead of 3 days). Also, the forum topic related to creation of Wiki accounts has been changed. --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 11:03, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
A lot of outdated maps, images, information. A lot of missed information that will be very hard to fill in the future. Especially the war pages, it will be very hard to write a year later how the war between Indonesia and Romania actually was and will be very hard to use normal "sources" for it after such long time. --Aryamehr Flag of Iran talk 00:08, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
We have 2 options:
 • open edit + extension 1 (on anonymous edits) + Extension 2 (to prevent certain words or phrases) + Changing variables (protecting userspace, templates or other namespaces from anonymous edits) --- can be done in maximum 2 weeks
 • registration integration with eRepublik (contributors to login with their citizen names and passwords without asking for accounts) --- lots of coding, cannot be implemented in the near future
Which one do you prefer? Or does anyone have any other solutions? --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 19:42, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
Honestly, I'd work towards #2, and stray away from #1 as much as possible. I think the wiki needs further integration into the game itself, and it should at least be the focus of the Wigs for improvement for a brief stint. - –Dr. AgentChieftain Flag of the Crescent and Star PPP! B / C / D / F / P / S 00:59, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
I don't find either of those solutions very good. I don't think we are looking at the real problem here. It isn't that getting an account is difficult or takes too long. The problem is that users become quickly disinterested and rarely follow through with pages they start (even about themselves). There are some users that are hyper-diligent about every page they create. There are a few that seem to dabble in all aspects of the wiki. While most users log in once or twice, create a bare-bones citizen page and never log in again. The problem with the wiki does not lie with the number of editors, rather the editors themselves. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 04:43, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
I think an even greater problem is that we rely too much on random editors for reliable statistics. Things like maps, rankings, population data, territory control, and averages should be updated by a dedicated bot at least once a week. After all, you're the only one who regularly updates such information, and with your legs downgraded, you might not be as capable as a dedicated bot maintained by the staff.
Then again, my current goal is to make the wiki a more integral part of the game through templates and visuals, so I'm obviously a little biased towards having the game take care of the wiki itself. If all else fails, Admin can advertise for editors to come an help through eRepublik Insider and possibly offer more rewards to those that come and contribute the most (As we do now, but on a greater scale). - –Dr. AgentChieftain Flag of the Crescent and Star PPP! B / C / D / F / P / S 00:59, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
It is official - the team is working on an Automatic Integration Login (see my bump in a section below), but (like always) it will take some time.
Regarding automatic updates of "statistics" (I'm talking about the ones in templates), the team is analyzing several ideas on the best way to do it. Any suggestions/ideas/possibilities are welcome.
And about the "real problem", a solution is to tag pages a few days after their creation (while the citizens still check and make improvements to pages they create). I tried to do this with Toothpaste page, but as you can see, I did not have time to "follow-up" the discussion. Here is what I propose - create a new tab in eRepublik Official Wiki:Citizen Page Tutorial about Follow up - with the following information (anyone can come with other ideas about this las tab in the Tutorial):
 • inform citizens what are references and the correlated tags;
 • inform citizens what fictional means and what are fictional tags for;
 • train citizens to add references and to not get scared by them;
 • remind citizens to check on pages that they create/improve.

Belea, I will write the text if you can create the page in the template. However, after a month of patrolling new pages, I am convinced people don't get past the Image tab in the CPT. Thanks, but I don't know what [&shy] means? -- Citizen1257373.jpg Mr. Awesome | Talk | 16:43, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

I have some comments:

 1. "Congressmen" is exclusive - please change to "Congress Members" like it now is in the game. Not everyone who plays the game is male, you know...
 2. What is the point of breaking the list down by party or region when the main list for the country allows you to sort the table? It seems like a lot of needless work. If a person wanted that information, he or she could easily sort the list.
 3. Are you expecting other "countries" to use this template? Others have their own way of doing things. Do you plan on publicizing it?

--QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 03:20, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

 1. "Congressmen" is a general term that includes women, but I'll change it if you really want me to. It makes the page names longer though...
 2. You can have only a list of congress members from a specific region for that region's page.
 3. I don't care who uses it, but my country loves it.
-- Citizen1257373.jpg Mr. Awesome | Talk | 00:15, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
I am sorry, I do not know of any English speaking country where female members of congress refer to themselves as congressmen. It is NOT a gender neutral term. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 02:55, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

I don't think that the history category should refer to only the calendar. Some articles are about historical events that deserve to be mentioned and don't necessarily have a specific date or range of dates. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 05:21, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

A start

Based on eRepublik Official Wiki:Bar/Debate 6, I drafted this. Any improvement will be more than welcome. --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 02:41, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Nobody knows who country A is, and nobody cares about country B

I was editing Alliance, when I came across an issue that I've had with this wiki for a while: an explanation that seemed more jumbled than the definition because it uses country A and B as the example. I don't know about anyone else, but when I see letters in an explanation, it just makes me have to try that much harder to get what it's trying to say, because country A doesn't mean anything to me. I could understand using country A in a definition, because a definition has to be able to be applied to every use of the word, but an example is supposed to just be a tool that makes it easier to understand the definition.

To show you what I mean, here's what was originally on the page:

If countries A and B both have an Alliance with country C and country A decides to attack country B, the Alliance between countries A and C will be canceled.

Here's what I changed it to:

If Sweden and Germany both have an Alliance with Poland, and Sweden decides to attack Germany, then the Alliance between Sweden and Poland will be canceled.

It's just so much more readable with meaningful countries attached to it, in my opinion. So, should we change these kinds of examples every time we see them? y/n

http://wiki.erepublik.com/index.php/Special:Popularpages

This used to show the most popular pages on the erepublik wiki (the amount of times they have been viewed). Now for me it only shows the most popular OFFICAL pages of the wiki, rather than every page. Even though I am not one to gloat I did like looking to see if my page had moved up every now and again (even though 90% of the page views would probably be from myself due to the fact I constantly look at my wiki article at least several times a day). Basic Templates That Don't Work

I know we had quite a lengthy discussion back in Bar Debate 8, but I think these problems require some quicker updating. Many templates are just out of date and don't work well at all. I think an uber editor needs to just go into them and just make them work right. I'm not talking about drastic changes, I just mean that the functionality is really, REALLY off. Here are my grievances:

 1. Headers like 'Attributes' and 'History' only have one or two things that go under them. Headers should be reorganized ('Formation' should go towards the top).
 2. The 'Links' section is messy. The forum link just says "forum" and the 'Other Link' has a default ".html" thingy on it that makes certain links not work.
 1. There are way to many horizontal lines. Make them where they are on the other templates.
 2. The 'Military' header is out of date (none of those variables are available anymore).
 1. There is no data on eRepublik for number of views.
 2. 'Style' and 'Content' do not have definitions on the template page (I don't know what they mean).
 1. Generally okay, but I didn't really take an adequate look. I think someone else should look at it.
 1. I think that some of the variables are out of date in the 'Economy' section (i.e. eRepublik does not offer them)
 2. Needs to have some links in it (forums, website, etc.)

Update

Sunday, March 22, 2009, 14:00 (Romania time) - the MediaWiki software will be updated from version 1.11.2 to version 1.14.
The eRepublik Official Wiki will not be available for one hour. --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 11:26, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

The eRepublik skin and my Citizen redesign seemed to take a real beating. Other than that, it seems to have gone smoothly. - –Dr. AgentChieftain Flag of the Crescent and Star PPP! B / C / D / F / P / S 01:10, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
The eRepublik Skin is based 100% on the MonoBook Skin from MediaWiki 1.11.2 - it will have to be redesigned.
Citizen took a real beating because of the collapsibility changes in the MediaWiki structure. See below for more details. --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 09:51, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
Actually, that was more of the case of eBox. Citizen (And my sandbox) was breaking because the mechanics of <center> were changed. - –Dr. AgentChieftain Flag of the Crescent and Star PPP! B / C / D / F / P / S 00:45, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
Oh, and old collapsibility is gone in its entirety. - –Dr. AgentChieftain Flag of the Crescent and Star PPP! B / C / D / F / P / S 02:39, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
And it is officially dead. MediaWiki 1.14 relies only on collapsible tables (and all other types of collapsibility were dropped). Basically, they collapse everything by turning them into tables. --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 09:51, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
I was trying to devise something similar to this after discovering the special header in Wikipedia's (Template category), but I'm having trouble with the edit link. Take a look here.
Once I finish my top priorities (Citizen, Portal:Military, and a surprise), I'm going to get back to work on Collapse. If I can't figure out a solution to the edit link problem, I'm going to go to MediaWiki and ask the experts for a hand. - –Dr. AgentChieftain Flag of the Crescent and Star PPP! B / C / D / F / P / S 00:43, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
And file uploads do not work for the moment. --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 09:44, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
When a file is uploaded, a file page (also called "image description page") will be created, with a page name consisting of the file name (including extension), prefixed with "File:" (or in general the value of variable (MediaWiki 1.14 following) or (MediaWiki 1.13 or earlier).
Basically, all Image:Example.jpg must be moved to File:Example.jpg. And the new Template:Citizen must use the format type File:Example.jpg. That or a kind of switch must be used to choose from the two types of page names.
--Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 23:27, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
Isn't this just a matter of changing "Image:" to "File:" in the template? You can do this to the current Citizen, and if I'm understanding things correctly, everything will still work.
I've made the changes to the new version already, but since I can't edit protected pages, well, you know. :awesome: - –Dr. AgentChieftain Flag of the Crescent and Star PPP! B / C / D / F / P / S 00:34, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

CONGRATS! I hate to bring this up here but since it does involve this in some way (you may move this to somewhere more appropriate, I am not sure where that would be), but shouldn't you also remove editors like Emerick and ThisGenMedia who haven't done much of worth in a very long time, and based on the edits that gave them the title, aren't as 'good' (sorry I cannot think of a more appropriate word at this time) as the others who received it? This applies for others as well, but those two names would have to be the stand outs in this situation. Again congrats still for AndyCro, he is definitely one of those people who do deserve it!!. I am not including only you as people to remove. People don't deserve to be on that list if they haven't been on the wiki for months and especially if they haven't edited things in a long time. I agree a 'Past Uber Editors' list sounds good for this situation. Pierric Bross 23:15, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
Congrats and I also agree with Bross. --Aryamehr Flag of Iran talk 00:14, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

agreed with bross--Mr.Srachit (talk with me) :awesome: 13:42, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

agreed - People should not be on that list if they haven't been active for months and especially if they haven't edited things in a long time... Oh, almost forgot... congratulations AndyCRo, you have earned it.----Hrvat User_talk:Hrvat 03:46, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Hello, I am HIZUMI and I will try to translate parts of Wiki in Japanese. However I have not found any guide to create new files, especially files in other languages. If there is any guide about translations, please let me know about it. Respects. --HIZUMI 15:01, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Help:Tips#How_to_translate_pages Japanese is not in the list, so I need one information before you can continue: the name of your language, in your own language --Mini "Template" Bill Italian in the deep core bother me! 18:33, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Portal for Politics?? hmmmmmmmmmm that might.........might work, but we will need quiet a lot of information. Some suggestions of what we can include:
 • Various successful Presidents
 • People who are known for taking over countries by winning presidential elections.
 • Different government systems of different countries i.e one section where names of different countries comes up with the different ministries they have.
 • If I remember right there is some kind of what is a good congressman tutorial somewhere here in the wiki
thats all that I can think of for now :) oh and logo welcome to the WIKI!!!!--Mr.Srachit (talk with me) :awesome: 07:21, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Problems with photos

I have a problem, since I can not find why the photo I select to have as image does not appear properly in my page. (Please, see HIZUMI)--HIZUMI 18:20, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

I wrote here what the problem is. Wait for the template maintainers to stop by and give more detailed information on what to do next. To sum it up, there is a tiny problem with Template:Citizen that must be taken care of. --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 23:29, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Wiki Chronicle

I have started a newspaper about the wiki, it is called the Wiki Chronicle. I am hoping that it will spread some wiki-love and wiki-interest to the rest of the eRepublik community. Please subscribe, vote, read, respond, comment, etc. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 05:03, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

I read its article, its a good newspaper. Could the admins write an article about the wiki like u guys wrote last time?? this time with different pages. Also QJ u could post at the end of every article a link to a interesting article, it could be a historic one, like the different pages for history of different countries or anything like that. oh and if admins waited for some time for the Portal:Military to be ready then you could post a link to it also.--Mr.Srachit (talk with me) :awesome: 08:11, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
Interesting idea. (Coming soon with more feedback...) --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 08:16, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the offer but no thanks. --Aryamehr Flag of Iran talk 11:26, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

what offer?--Mr.Srachit (talk with me) :awesome: 13:26, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

He is just trying to be mean to me because he holds a grudge. Srachit, I will take your idea of posting a link to an interesting page and when the Military portal is rolled out I am thinking of a dedicated article for it! --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 04:31, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Numbers

http://wiki.erepublik.com/index.php?title=Experience_points&curid=5634&diff=95621&oldid=95580 - is it correct in English? (I mean in Romanian - 1,000 = 1; 2,000 = 2; 34,567 = 34 and so on) (it looks very strange to me, but if its correct, someone enlighten me, please). --Geo "Talk Pages" Belea 13:36, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

IRegion

I have created my first complex template, so I had to do a lot of minor changes. I hope that this isn't a problem. I just hope that I have done it correctly. I will also add IRegion/Hrvatski to all Croatian regions in few days when I will be updating the region information.--AndyCro Croatia If you have a suggestion... 09:18, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
