Why Was PEACE GC Page Deleted?

Okay, I've redirected the page to PEACE Global Community. Now my question is why it would be deleted yet not redirected, invalidating hundreds of links for the past three days.

We are in the midst of a major redirect cleanup. We are removing most of them from the system. Please be patient as these links will be fixed. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 20:56, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

Finland-Latvia War II or Latvia-Finland War?

I'd like to hear your opinion about this page: Finland-Latvia_Wars. Finland-Latvia War I started when Finland occupied two Latvian regions in order to get high grain. After a while, Finland was pushed away from Latvia and the countries didn't share border anymore. Yesterday Latvia attacked Southern Finland, and now someone has made a page calling this event Finland-Latvia War II. I think this is incorrect. As far as I know, battles between two countries are considered to be part of the same war unless there was a peace treaty between. Now there wasn't, so wouldn't this battle(and those to come) go under Finland-Latvia War(NOT Finland-Latvia War I!)? Also, if this was to be called a completely new war, it should be named "Latvia-Finland War" as Finland-Latvia War II suggest that Finland attacked again, which it didn't. I already brought this up on article's talk page (Talk:Finland-Latvia Wars), but afterward I thought it would be solved better here. I suggest Finland-Latvia Wars to be deleted and information be moved from Finland-Latvia War I and Finland-Latvia War II back to Finland-Latvia War. What do you think? --Icon-Finland.png Kuhaa|sTalk to me! 20:10, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

The second "war" should be included in the Great War of 2009 as it is a part of the ongoing machinations of that conflict. It is separate from the earlier conflict, but is not a stand-alone war in itself. I suggest deleting Finland-Latvia War II and adding it as a battle of the Great War. --Chris Stanwick 20:15, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
That's a good idea. I'll wait a day or two before adding deletion templates, because someone might want to add something. I'm also glad to see you're back, Chris!--Icon-Finland.png Kuhaa|sTalk to me! 20:45, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. It's good to be back. I'm not 100% yet, and won't be for a long time, but at least I can sit up and use a computer again. It looks like I have a lot to catch up on too. --Chris Stanwick 20:48, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
Good idea, Chris, and (sort of) welcome back.
Also, as a side note, I propose that all these types of discussions (military ones) to be moved to eRepublik Official Wiki:WikiProject Military after they are completed. Or to be started directly there.
Just a random thought...

Gold offers

How do you guys and ladies wish to tackle this one? --Belea2008 10:11, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

Or do you think it would be better to put it directly in the Buy gold page? --Belea2008 10:12, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
I'd say let's put it in the Buy Gold page. I also believe that Alerts pages need to be updated.--Icon-Finland.png Kuhaa|sTalk to me! 11:13, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
I have created an example of how Gold offers would look like with current information for it (a picture could be implemented, of course). It is basic information taken from link above. I wouldn't put it on the Buy gold page as it already has too much information. I would rather add section Earn extra gold by completing offers and adding link to the gold offers page. Of course, if you decide to implement it on the Buy Gold page, you are free to delete my work. ;) --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 09:19, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

News Flash

Check this out this article; it is what we have been waiting for... This also explains why I am deleting redirects....--QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 15:52, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

That's good news! No more redirecting citizen pages. \o/ --Icon-Finland.png Kuhaa|sTalk to me! 20:26, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
OK baby, this is all nice... But do you know that now I will have a lot of work to see what pages have to be linked in other way??? xD --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 21:25, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
But, lets be serious, maybe off topic, but I see that you have deleted some templates. I have removed templates for Romanian and Norwegian pages from the articles, but why did you delete, for example PCPPres? (I am not saying that this is bad, but I would like to know the reason :))--AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 21:25, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
And why is our Admin deleting redirect like United States?--AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 21:25, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
I deleted those templates yesterday in a fit of wiki rage. The discussion last month? September? was that region and party navigation boxes weren't needed because the categories were there to fill the role. I didn't do them all because they really need to be removed from pages first. As for the party presidents... we cannot support the categorization of party presidents. It is too much and really not necessary info. We can create categories for country presidents, but party presidents, no. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 21:31, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
As far as redirects, I told Admin to only remove those redirects that begin with - Citizen, Country, Region, Party, Company, Newspaper. A few other redirects are being deleted, like when there is nothing linking them, redirects that are not needed, etc. I am checking these by looking at the "What links here" page. Inevitably, some needed redirects will get deleted in the shuffle. We are doing this manually to try to not replicate the damage that was done in May. In some cases, we will try to fix links in articles to remove the need for some redirects. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 21:37, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
Thank you QJ for this fast answer, I thought that this was that. So, we are removing categories that are really not needed, especially connected to the parties (you could asked for help, you know that?), and while we are doing that our Admin is removing all redirect (needed or not needed, it won't be the first time). But, as I would like that this process ends before continuing to update articles, I will take a break until this Saturday. I hope that he (any you) will be finished with deleting redirects until then. But, if you need any help, I will be here, doing some minor changes. :) --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 09:45, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

Ok, gang, Part I is complete. However there are some more redirects that need to be removed. But before we can do this, we need to do some link changes on pages. How you can help:

  1. Go to Special:ListRedirects
  2. Pick a redirect - concentrate on the language ones first...
  3. On the side bar, click the "What links here" link.
  4. View the list of pages that use the redirect
  5. Go to the page, search for the link, and replace it

Let me know if you have any questions. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 15:39, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

I apologize for red links that have appeared... Some pages were deleted before their time. I am working to fix these. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 15:57, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
No way! I apologize for the not needed deletions. QJ has nothing to do with that idea. --Belea2008 17:14, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

Poking Around

Is this where I request to become an uber editor? I have experience with WikiText as a former active English Wikipedia editor and have been in the game for quite some time. The reason I'm applying is because I'd like to import some of the templates over from en.wiki including some of the military-related templates for users to be able to put devices (stars, oak leafs, etc) on top of military ribbons. This could be used for most military distinctions and could bring in custom awards from every country's military in to the eRepublik.

Also want to help maintain the integrity of the eRep Wiki as well. I have participated in countervandalism work on en.wiki and would be able to assist with CVU-related work as well. If I just barked up the wrong tree, please let me know and I'll post on the right page. Thanks. - Private First Class Jameson L. Tai talk / USMC 06:53, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

Check out eRepublik Official Wiki:Uber_Editors. Also, Uber Editorship doesn't convey any powers, it is more of a recognition of your work in the wiki. As for uploading templates, only eRepublik Official Wiki:Engineer can do this and that role is based on a number of edits. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 12:01, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
I understand that, but there's also no mention as to how users may attain their Engineering usergroup. There's no application process that I'm aware of where I may sign up. - Private First Class Jameson L. Tai talk / US Marine Corps 13:51, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
You are given the Engineer role once you hit 400 edits. There is no application. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 15:32, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
Bureaucrats can also grant the Engineer status, but, of course, that contributor must have done something really special in order to receive it. --Belea2008 17:07, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
On a related question, is there a user category for Engineers so I may reach them about importing a template over from en.wiki? I tried Category:Engineer and Category:Engineers and they were redlinks. I'm trying to see if I could get this done one way or another with the next week or so. Thanks. - Private First Class Jameson L. Tai talk / US Marine Corps 01:40, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
You can write in here, in the Coffee Bar, for contacting some of the most active engineers. --Belea2008 12:04, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
Cool. I'm trying to get Template:Ribbon_devices imported over to eRep wiki so military personnel can easily mark repeated service awards with the appropriate ribbon devices. Can an active engineer help me with this? Thanks. - Private First Class Jameson L. Tai talk / US Marine Corps 12:18, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
Anyone? - Private First Class Jameson L. Tai talk / US Marine Corps 06:34, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
This seems to be a fairly sophisticated template and beyond my skills. I also have problems borrowing real life service ribbons for a virtual game. Is there even a process in place to "award" such service ribbons? What stops a person from adding these to their page who doesn't really deserve it?--QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 15:08, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

(unindent) We are not borrowing the real life ribbons, we already have our own (See Military Decorations, Medals and Insignia of the United States Armed Forces) and we are simply borrowing their template for our usage. Also, it is standard practice for these military ribbons to be added on the word of the soldier (plus if this is Wiki, we can always change discrepancies if someone tries to add every single one of them for kicks). This is already standard practice via the original venue where these ribbons surfaced, on the US military forums. It has worked for the past 7 months, it should be fine. - Private First Class Jameson L. Tai talk / US Marine Corps 21:09, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

Ok, sorry, I didn't make the connection... PS "Operation Frostbite Ivan" is my favorite operation name. Talk to Belea2008 about adding you to the Engineer group. He is the only one with the power to do so. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 21:23, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
We have added Jameson L. Tai to the group Engineers. --Admin 13:16, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

What if the party change just its name

As stated in the What if... section, it's said that there should be created a new page as if it was a new party..., but sometimes it just overcome a change name, the people, principles, project stay the same.

What to do in that case?, I just got an example, just look at the history page of this party, I had created a redirect to the new name (so inwiki and maybe ingame article's linking don't get lost but go where it should be appropiated), but well, probably due to this week changes, it get erased, so before doing it again, I wanted to get an idea of what to do... if theer is a differente policy about it, since personally, I don't get why it should be craeted a whole new page just for a slight change name, since it even didn't mean a new era or something.

Its obvious that it need to be mentioned inside the page that the name got changed after that discussion that day, and etc

Thanks, ;)--Icon-Chile.png Purohueso (talk if you want) 05:18, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

It is easier to create a new page rather than a redirect.
  • We are trying to keep the numbers of redirects low.
  • It is one thing if the party changes its name once, but lets say you get a party that changes its name 3 or 4 times, that means you have a whole chain of redirects - A Party -> B Party -> C Party -> D Party.... This is overly complicated for data management. It is confusing for a user who clicks "A Party" and the "D Party" page appears. And it also shows up on the Special:DoubleRedirects page that we monitor - this is a bad thing.
--QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 15:56, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
But it is also more confusing in terms of facts..., followed by the party... but its the party itself, and in the sake of space used..., it's better to create just a redirect with a pair of lines of code... than a full page with all the party information again (or it got even more confusing for the ones reading). I dont know if you understand what I try to say, :P
--Icon-Chile.png Purohueso (talk if you want) 17:10, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
Examples... This is where this system has worked well. Forward Britain! and Movement for Democratic Unity. The party changed its name for 2 months and then changed it back. The MDU page has info about Forward Britain!, but also more info is on the FB! page. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 17:19, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
I think I finally got the idea. I will apply it. --Icon-Chile.png Purohueso (talk if you want) 20:22, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

I got another question about "special cases" of party pages: this party (Movimiento Americano Social) has been present in 2 countries (when the chileans where living abroad in eArgentina, and the actual party in eChile). I know that I could just put 2 sections in the page as "In Argentina" and "In Chile", and even maybe put it on top as some sort of dissambiguation, but what about categories, since the argentinian one had his precesors and succesors, while the chilean obviously had others..., and just thinking also about when it comes to categorize the party under "Parties of Chile" and "Historical parties of Argentina" both. The problem won't be solved by using "Movimiento Americano Social (Argentina)" or something like that, since both parties are named the same and when it comes to reference them, unless they know about the existence of it, they will put the Chilean one. Any suggestion of what to do? --Icon-Chile.png Purohueso (talk if you want) 20:22, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

When parties have the same name, like in that situation, there really should have been a disambiguation page. At "Movimiento Americano Social" with links to "Movimiento Americano Social (Argentina)" and "Movimiento Americano Social (Chile)" --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 20:27, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

NOW HEAR THIS - OFFICIAL CHANGE

From now on, we will no longer allow the use of "navigation boxes" on party or region, or citizen pages.

  • What am I talking about?I am referring to boxes like this Template:Regions of Peru
  • Why? Well, first of all they aren't needed. Since every region, party, or citizen has categories, the navigation box is redundant. Second, they quickly become out of date... Parties change name, regions change hands during war...
  • Exceptions: Exceptions will be made for the general "playing the game" pages. Many of these pages have similar boxes which are helpful to users.
  • This was discussed a few months ago in the bar. I just wanted to notify people so that they can start being removed.

Thanks for your cooperation. I also wonder if a citizen category like "President of Country" would be helpful instead of the generic "Presidents" category? --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 18:48, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

+1 "President of Country" category.----Hrvat User_talk:Hrvat 22:55, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

Of course they would be, AndyCro! I believe that someone has already started "Presidents of Poland" and "Prime Ministers of UK" categories which would fall under here.--QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 02:24, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

Redirecting

Geo told me you have decided to disallow the use of redirects. May I propose for it to be allowed in the case of sysops? --adi.furk Icon-Romania.png i want fallout in eRepublik

Now that is not totally true... We have not disallowed the use, we have just curtailed and cut down the use.... --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 16:23, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
Does that mean I can redirect "ep" "EP" "xp" and "XP" to "experience points" ? --adi.furk Icon-Romania.png i want fallout in eRepublik
No, we are promoting this type of link convention: [[Experience points|EP]] or [[Experience points|XP]]. Link to the original page, it makes things so much easier in the long run. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 15:21, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
I have never searched "experience points". I always search "ep" or "xp", just check the file, all of it is filled with (EP). Plus, in the image you can see that it says "xp points". So, a citizen should quickly reach the desired page when looking for "ep" or "xp". We must also take into consideration that caps might be activated, and generally I don't care that I use or not caps, I want to find the information fast. --adi.furk Icon-Romania.png i want fallout in eRepublik
  • slams head on desk* I am just trying to make things standardized. For example, if an article uses "EP" then the translated article will use EP, so then we have 15 redirects for EP in the list (with different languages) and it just makes it a pain to deal with. We might create redirects in the future to make searching easier, but for now please just link to the original article. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 18:38, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
Evrika! I get it now! The idea is to remove "EP" from every other page that contains it, and keep "EP" only in the "experience points" page. Great Idea! --adi.furk Icon-Romania.png i want fallout in eRepublik
You've got it champ! I am trying to formulate my crazy scheme into words (and directives) because User:Admin left a huge list of questions on my talk page. I know what should be done, I know what needs to be done, I just haven't had the time or energy to articulate it yet. Just hang with me for a while. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 14:27, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

New Main Menu

Main Menu bar has been updated with one completely new section Gold and Extras. I have a picture of it and I'm ready to upload it, but I have a question. We currently have a clickable image map on pages related to Main Menu, but updating them all in translated languages will be a real pain. Should we create a template to make it more simple? I think the image map is great and I'd like to see it stay. I uploaded a new file and tried to get the measures right, but I don't know if it worked because it takes some time for image to update.

HomeMy PlacesMarketInfoCommunityGold and ExtrasMenu Bar (clickable)

The image turned out to be pretty poor quality(and it's bigger in every aspect than the previous one) so we'll need to work on this. But I believe it would be easier to just update few templates than few dozens of pages if there are changes to menu bar in the future. What do you think?--Icon-Finland.png Kuhaa|sTalk to me! 11:13, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

Template ideas sound good. Also, your attempt with Image Map above is working fine :awesome:, but...
...the Menu you are seeing is part of "live split testing". What I understood (from the tech guys): there will be more variations of the menu bar (or other sections of the website) - they will be seen by less than 10% of the citizens/organizations (there's also one variation with the Gold + Extras button all blue without the small Gold icon on it).
The goal of the "split testing" is to see which of these variations have a better impact on the eRepublik community (user friendly/increased usage). After a final decision is taken - which of these variations will be rolled out to the entire community, I will let you know. Feel free to share your thoughts about the subject.
--Belea2008 12:13, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
This is the version I have, and I think it is better than then one above (the green just looks out of place IMO, and although you want the gold buying feature to be noticeable, its actually a turn off for me. The gold icon could be added though.
As for the menue itself, I find the current layout a lot better. It seems more logically where the submenus are.
--Patti11 12:34, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
I like the patti11 version, the green is too much distracting, though the gold icon should be added imho to leave that little bit of differentiation between the norml buttons and the "special" Get gold. The submenu division is much better and i like it. --Furio "UBW" Icon-Italy.png 12:38, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
I agree that the blue one looks better, that green stands out a little too much. Belea, do you have any idea how long will this testing phase last? Also, I wasn't aware of this so sorry about the picture, it was too soon to start making changes. I'll revert the picture to the old version(that's why my imagemap is(will be) broken) until we know something about this for sure.--Icon-Finland.png Kuhaa|sTalk to me! 12:48, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
My money is on the blue version with the gold icon on it. The unequal distribution of menu items (Home is so short compared to the others) is a bit annoying. I would make them all a bit shorter, so they can be of equal width.--Quicksilver 19:44, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
[Insert agreeable opinion with "Either way really doesn't matter to me personally. I don't think it makes that huge of a difference] --Dish
I don't like the Green. Keep it all blue. The green is disjointed. (ask a lady about color)... --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 01:09, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

Translations

I have been updating pages like Chat, Company, Company (presentation page), Buy gold lately. Of course, I have been making changes to the English versions. On some pages I have added the Out of Date template to the translated pages. But I am wondering if there is a better way to notify our wiki translators that the English pages have been updated/changed and they should update the translated pages.

My suggestion is to create a Wiki Translators page where we list what pages have been updated recently so people know to update the translated wiki pages. I would find this easier than having to add a notice to all of the translated pages if something was updated. Thoughts? --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 02:35, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

+1 I would certainly appreciate this. --Icon-Finland.png Kuhaa|sTalk to me! 10:39, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
See Wiki Translators Bureau --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 16:23, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
The Wiki Translators Bureau is a good idea. Now I'm not sure if this is possible on the current platform, but I was thinking of a template, which is added to the beginning of every translated article. If the English pages have gone through a non-minor edit, it would show a message on the translated page about it. Otherwise, it wouldn't show up (or would show up empty). This would make it easier to keep the pages updated, since otherwise you'll have to check the edit histories to make sure. Unless, of course, the watchlist is used extensively - but Translators Bureau wouldn't have much of a use. I have quite limited experience of the wiki platform so I don't know if it supports such functions, but in theory that would be sweet? Scadens 07:25, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
Scadens, I like your suggestion. A Bot would be the best thing for what you are suggesting... But the issue is we have a lack of wiki bot programmers.... As I seem to be one of the people who most often changes the English "Playing the Game" pages and I don't want to manually place notices on the translated pages when there is an update. We tell people that the most accurate information is on the English page, but I am sure that since we have people who are playing non-English versions of the game, they are relying on non-English pages. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 15:03, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
Apparently it isn't possible to determine the revision time of another page with the current setup. So either we need a bot OR we'd need an extension to the revisionday/month/year/timestamp function. That way we could just fetch the timestamp of the article above (i.e. the english version), compare it to the timestamp of the translated page, then using simple if-then logic output the text, right? I found some function extensions here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Brion.finlay/PathFunctions - although I haven't come up with a way to determine whether the edit is minor or major. The ingame wiki link has dashes instead of spaces. For example Western Transdanubia opens the page "Western-Transdanubia" instead of Western Transdanubia. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 18:03, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
Understood. Wait for a few days to see if the team will solve this one (from the eRepublik site) in the near future or they are setting a low priority for it and "will be solved in a few months". --Belea2008 16:44, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

LangMenu update

Today, two languages have been removed - Afrikaans (South African) and עברית (Israeli). This languages didn't have ONE article translated. This is only the begining of adding new and removing unused languages from the language list. Also, new rules will have to be implemented for translators and adding languages so we can normally function with this section of wiki. Also, I have been experimenting with the flags for English version, so I would like to discuss about it... Do we need one flag (and which one), or should I leave this dinamic trio. Please, comment on everything above, leave as many smart comments as you can (and don't write it on pig latin! xD) so we could improve relationship translators - editors - sysops. Thank you all. --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 08:37, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

Glad you brought this up... There are over 50 countries in RL that have English as an official language and many more countries have a large number of people that speak English language. I firmly believe that English Flag is sufficient to mark English Language in the language bar... otherwise we shall have 20 or 30 countries demanding to have their flag included (after all USA, UK and Australia are already included so why discriminate against others?).----Hrvat User_talk:Hrvat 09:23, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
British flag please, not English flag. They are not the same! Seriously, we should also remove the Slovakian flag and leave just the Czech one, after all, that was the flag of the united Czechoslovakia.--Martin23230 12:01, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
I think the flag of the UK should be used for English, just as it is used for language selection in the game. If we add Australia, then we should add Canada. And notice we are using the flag of Spain for Spanish when it is only one of the MANY Spanish speaking countries in the game. Martin23230, will the Czechs and Slovaks get butthurt if we use the flag of Czechslovakia? I know the split was amicable, but issues with language come big national feelings. What about the ending of the two Portuguese? I know that there are differences, but do we need to split them and have both? We must keep in mind the purpose of wiki translation = to make the wiki more accessible to players. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 21:04, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
Let's just solve this debate using majority rule for the English menu option: USA = #1 English Speaker, UK = #2 English Speaker
We should just either keep it the same, revert to just US\UK flags, or create a combined US\UK ball flag. Combined flags might work for other language-nationality conflicts too.
--VSkyzv 06:55, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

(undent) Just to throw it out there, see User:AgentChieftain/Sandbox/Template:LangMenu. Personally, I think the lower one looks great. Much smaller, no words. You can hover other them to see what languages they are, even if you can't tell by the flags. In case you haven't noticed, I did make File:Icon-English.png and File:Icon-Czechoslovak.png a while ago at Agent's request. Feel free to implement them if you wish. I personally would prefer using just the UK flag, as QJ said we could get into the same arguments with Portugal and Spain. If we have the UK and USA, why not Canada, Australia, Ireland, Malta… Something like this for German? Plus the eRepublik site uses the British flag for the English language. As for the Czechoslovaks, I would think it would make more sense to have the flag of when they were united. Since this happens to be the same flag the Czech Republic uses now, that will have to do. Plus, I don't think there are any Slovak editors on the wiki, the only pages other than the tutorial to be translated are a Czech Party, the Czech Armed Forces page and the country's page itself. Compare to Slovakia/Českoslovenština.--Martin23230 11:06, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

+1 Sounds good.--VSkyzv 01:53, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

Housekeeping on this Wiki

Do we have bots continuously running through our articles? I'm just wondering if we have something like AutoWikiBrowser that helps find orphaned articles, spelling mistakes, so forth... If not, then I was going to see if I could perhaps get in contact with the AWB guys and see if I can start running it on our eRepublik Wiki. I'll also have to start keeping a new dictionary considering adding an "e" before just about anything in this game is acceptable ;) Icon-China.png - Jameson L. Tai talk / HKGOLDEN 18:47, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

Everything is manual. (Though I have been accused of being a cyborg.) With us having multiple languages in the wiki, would a bot like that work? Also, could it deal with the different forms of English used (both British and American spellings are used and accepted here). --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 19:00, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
Are you talking about this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser ? --Belea2008 08:50, 24 November 2009 (UTC)
Yes, that's the one I'm referring to. At the moment I'm having problems getting my old IRC credentials to work on Freenode, so it might take a little bit, but we'll see. AWB tries to catch spelling mistakes, but it only highlights the changes to the user and the user can doubleclick anything that he/she doesn't want AWB to change and it won't change it, so it will be up to the user to catch these mistakes (so it's not fully automated). Icon-China.png - Jameson L. Tai talk / HKGOLDEN 09:52, 24 November 2009 (UTC)
We have no automated bot. ATM I'm the only person to own a bot account, User:MiniBot, which is used by a bot I wrote that makes automatic changes following my instruction (I usually check its operate before letting it free anyway) --Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 08:50, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Redirect/Red Link Clean Up

I have been working on cleaning up redirects and red links. The eventual goal is to get rid of most redirects in the system. There are still a lot of redirects that need to be removed, specifically abbreviation redirects, cities, and pages spelled/capitalized improperly. However, these have to be checked and pages edited first before we remove the redirect. Please, if you have questions, ask. Process

  • Go to Special:ListRedirects
  • Select a link from the list
  • On the side bar toolbox click “What links here”
  • Open a page that has the link
  • Search for the redirect
  • Replace it with where it was redirecting to

For example, I am replacing USWP with United States Workers Party. I go to a page that uses it, Search the page and replace all links to USWP with United States Workers Party
Cities
Since we have no word on if cities will be reentered into the game it seems best to get rid of these redirects. If someone has Mayor of Lincoln in the citizen page template, type this in the “location field = Nebraska | Lincoln” The link will appear as Lincoln, but take you to the Nebraska page. If a city is used in text, create a link like this Lincoln. Remove links from city names on country pages, see France for an example.
Be Careful
If you can and are willing to help with this task, great. Actually if I can have people work on replacing all of the "EP" and "Experience Points" links with "Experience points" it would be a major help. Please feel free to ask questions. If you are unsure of anything, please ask. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 03:35, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

I would add also that you could also update the article that you are editing... Especially if it hadn't been updated for a while (if it has been update up to one week ago, then you just replace the link). Also, view is there other links that you could change (Example: United Kingdom/List of Mayors... All city links have been replaced with region links in one update!)--AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 11:42, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, if you see other red links on the page fix it! If it is a citizen page and it has a link to "Field Marshall" change it to the right spelling "Field Marshal".--QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 13:16, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

Bar/Translators Bureau

Lets face it, the only Bar that really gets used here is the Bar in English. So I have a suggestion... Lets archive/remove all of the Bars in other languages, ditch the templates, and make the Wiki Translators Bureau act as a Bar for translations. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 18:29, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

My "vision" on this idea was slightly different:
I also wish that, along with the reorganization of the Bar, a section in the Main Page to be added related to it, but I'm not very convinced of its overall utility and results.
Of course, if what I have in mind it is too complicated, we can tackle this in baby steps: go with your simpler idea and, with time, implement the rest of the ideas.
--Belea2008 19:41, 24 November 2009 (UTC)
I'd like to see translated Bars archived rather than deleted. And I kind of like the Belea's idea because like that everything would be "near" and easy to access.--Icon-Finland.png Kuhaa|sTalk to me! 19:55, 24 November 2009 (UTC)
I have no problem with your idea Geo, but can you rework the templates? I know I can't. How is it going to mesh with our monthly archival system? Another question, why are we even putting press releases in the wiki when there is a site for eRep press releases? http://press.erepublik.com/ Also it seems I have had to recategorize about half of the translated press releases... which makes me very sad/angry. The conversations from translated bars should be saved if they have relevant info. If they don't, then they should just be deleted. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 20:22, 24 November 2009 (UTC)
"I have no problem with your idea Geo, but can you rework the templates? I know I can't." - we'll do it together. If someone could make a "mock-up" (visual representation of how it should look like - anyone who knows "photoshop" can do it); I'll handle the code. I'm not that good at putting visual representations from my head to paper; and regarding the code, if I or other contributors cannot pull it through, I'll bribe with beer some "coding" friends in order to teach me.
"How is it going to mesh with our monthly archival system?" - I do not understand fully what you mean.
"Another question, why are we even putting press releases in the wiki when there is a site for eRep press releases?" - The Wiki Translations system is very easy to handle. Adi Furk can give you detailed info on why the Wiki was chosen as a translation environment for Insiders/Press releases/etc.
"Also it seems I have had to recategorize about half of the translated press releases... which makes me very sad/angry" - Leave a message to Adi Furk, please. He and his "team" wish to learn new things regarding the Wiki system (basically they will use it for a long time and the faster they learn, the better is for everybody).
"The conversations from translated bars should be saved if they have relevant info. If they don't, then they should just be deleted." - Let's archive them all. It hurts no one to have them (even if they are irrelevant).
Cheers. --Belea2008 20:45, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

Inconsistent capitalization

Being a very junior wiki editor, I'm wondering about a couple of things:
After fixing a lot of "Experience points" links lately, I started wondering about the capitalization of P in "Forfeit Points". Is the capitalization inconsistency going to be changed as well, or is there some hidden meaning behind it?
Cheers, Scadens 07:36, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

I have no idea why capitalization was used. I'm in favor or "Experience points" - as in, no capitalization, except the first letter.
This is a big problem. Houndreds of articles are written with capitalization in every word, and houndreds of them are written with capitalized only the first word. We have to bring a conzensus on how to proceed with it and this would be a great time to do it. A lot of redirects are deleted and many more will be deleted so what are we going to decide? Honestly, I don't have any opinion which is better, I will adapt. --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 11:42, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
The Wikipedia standard of capitalization is first word capitalized, second not, Wikipedia:WP:Naming_conventions. However, when we started the wiki we did not have this standard and most Americans (myself included) have been schooled that the words in a Title should be capitalized. So if we are going to institute this naming convention, we need to serious find a bot that can change links for us, because I a freaking tired of changing links :P. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 13:25, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

Also, as you probably have noticed, the country Moldavia was changed in game to Republic of Moldova. This obviously creates a lot of work here in wiki. How do you go about starting such a change? I'm assuming simple peons such as me need to wait for some sysop to pull a magic switch somewhere before going on a massive edit spree? Or is it just a matter of someone getting hands dirty?

Emerick

Could someone please check his contributions from the last 3 days. He is a good and hard working contributor when he's around, but he has the tendency of adding "spicy flavors" to the pages he edits (and some of these "flavors" may be out of line).
For example: http://wiki.erepublik.com/index.php?title=Woxan&curid=44556&diff=219973&oldid=218949

  • added a video without using Template:Video
  • used autoplay and autoloop (annoying in my opinion)
  • the video itself might be considered offesive and ironic towards Woxan.

Thanks in advance for the help! --Belea2008 18:20, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

If you would like Woxan to approve the video, I will get him to. Also, I can easily turn off the autoplay if the mods here decide that they should. --Emerick 23:36, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
I found nothing wrong with the video, because it is a video clip using the character in his avatar. Woxan is a chill guy so I don't think he would freak about it. Contracts in Wiki

Synopsis:

We would like to know how the Wiki Community feels about moving the whole Contracts Process and all the important valid contracts in here. Thanks in advance for any questions and suggestions you will have. --Admin 17:08, 26 November 2009 (UTC)

I like the fact that on the forums once you post you lock in what you post. On wiki, unless admin is asked to lock the page to "pageprotect=sysop" every time, a contract may be edited by another party during any point of the contract period by either party, or from a foreign unrelated party altogether. I would feel comfortable if there were measures in place to prevent that from occurring. (Yes, I know going through page history would identify who changed what, but it is still a pain to have to sort through edits instead of knowing there's always the original version of the contracts are safe and stable.) Icon-China.png - Jameson L. Tai talk / HKGOLDEN 12:38, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
I absolutely do not want the contract process moved here. We have a difficult enough time managing quality here. Contracts would be a lot of crap pages that are only relevant to two people. It would also mean that you would have to give every citizen a wiki account, which I am also against. I have already given you a rewording of the contract guidelines to make them easier to understand. I think the contracts between countries rule is a joke, because Admins have enforced contracts signed by presidents before. And you can't call something invalid where there is no rules stating what IS valid. Where the wiki can help with the contract process? Provide good, standardized formats for contracts... like one for trading a house for gold. One for an organization partnership. One for a country to country. One for governing a country organization. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 20:41, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
I would really like that Contracts remain for several reasons. Better styling of the contract is possible, linking to other people / regions / nations is possible from contract to that people and ad least 2 links will point to the contract (countries involved, but there is an option to add a history link to it (date signed), people who signed it (ad least two), etc) but it could easily be 10 links to it. And all of the contracts would be in one place. So I am for leaving the contracts here. --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 17:23, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
Wait, Country to Country contracts are ok in the wiki because they are relevant to a large group o people. Person to person contracts are not. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 20:00, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
OK, I am against person to person contracts on wiki also. But country to country contracts and alliance contracts are definite must on wiki! ;) --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 22:34, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
Having congressmen sign a contract in the forums is extremely difficult, having them come over to wiki to sign a contract is downright impossible. I don't see how contracts in wiki would work, I'm afraid. However, if you mean the admins verify contracts in the forums and the valid contracts are moved there, then that's another matter. Purge

Purging unused files would be very good! Also we need a way to change links... For example [1], we have this stupid redirect, every one that uses it needs to be replaced with "Experience points". Is this possible? --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 14:59, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

Around 50 files is there as a part of cleanup process of replacing national flags with only one official flag. Another 10 files is a part of something that I would call - attack on wiki - Special:Contributions/Lpcyu. Editor Lpcyu has added several RL files to it, changed one wiki article to put his RL things online. What about other 500 files that are in it... I do not know. Other

There are some issues to be resolved on this wiki... For example Leon Fitzergald article. It was deleted, it has 3 files connected to it, 4 links are pointing to it and in fact it is a part of history... Divinity changed his name to Leon Fitzergalded and finally to Leon Pong. Can we do something about it? Ad least creating an article - This citizen changed his name to Leon Fitzergald on XX day on divinity page, and on Fitzergald page the same thing, but for Leon Pong page... OR something else, just deleting part of history is not the solution. :( --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 17:43, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

I have temporarily undeleted the article, ad least until MiniBill purges the unused files next week. --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 14:18, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Another similar issue - Ryan Burnetti. He edited his own page, and then one day he decided that the time is that the page should be deleted, no matter that there are several links pointing to it. What about the fact that noone owns the page? And especially if that page is a part of eRepublik history and already interconnected with wiki? --AndyCro Icon-Croatia.png Click here to talk with me baby! ;) 14:18, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

A few comments...I don't like the report and donate links, I think they aren't useful. The link to the profile is enough. The country rank is not needed as that changes sooooooo much. I don't like the economy section because people change jobs so much this info would quickly get out of date and there would be a lot of red links to companies. But if someone wanted to put "General Manager" positions only, it is ok, but I don't like it for Employees. I also don't like the listing of wars and resistance wars in the template. It is just too much information. Oh and for the ability to change the color, I don't want to give the citizens that ability... what if we set each template to a certain color, citizen blue, org green, etc. --QJ Lincoln Talk To Me 00:40, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
The template structure was copied straight from AC draft. Anyway, I too second the idea of the country rank being useless, as it's the thing that changes most frequently. About the job part, I don't think ppl change work that much, but I'm open to discussion. +1 on the report and donate links not useful, but they really occupy not much space, which would be empty anyway. About colours: I too don't think giving citizens the ability to change color is a big idea (I imagine the full variety of colour perversion the human mind can picture). The type/color idea is nice, but doesn't meet one of the causes of template redesing: having a wiki apperance more similar to the game one --Mini "Template" Bill Icon-Italy.png bother me! 08:31, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Leaving ironies aside, from my knowledge, all texts in the game have proofing in British English.
But that does not necessarily means that the Wiki must be also in British English. What you guys and ladies decide, goes!
