History
The United Greece Party was a Greek political party founded in April, 2008. It rose to prominence with the merger of the top 3 Greek political parties at the time, the Greek Nationalist Party, The Family and Spartans. This merger, announced May 25th 2008, made the UGP the primary power base in Greece until the arrival of the Greek Republic Resistance party in mid-June. On July 10, 2008, a coup dealt a deathblow to the three month-old United Greece Party.
July Coup
In early July, shortly after a landslide Resistance victory in the general election, a number of disgruntled Resistance members left the GRR and pledged their support to the United Greece Party, nominating Maria Anistonopolous as their candidate for Party President. Maria won the party elections with over half of the vote, and quickly instituted changes to the party's platform and image, including changing the name of the party to the Socialist Unity Party.
