Admiral Ranks
There are numerous Admiral ranks of various grades that have been used:

The rank of Admiral is comparable to General in land-based armies, and Air Chief Marshal in airforce-based armies.
United States
Admiral was the most senior officer rank in the United States Coast Guard.
United Kingdom
In the Royal Navy, the rank of Admiral was given to the last Commanding Officer, John F Baker, after partial military rank reforms. Previous Navy commanding officer ranks had been Brigadier and later Admiral of the Fleet. The rank of Admiral is also given to officers of the Defence Staff, the HQ of the British Armed Forces.
