Epic battles were introduced during Epic Warfare Tournament. When a battle became epic, triple prestige points were awarded. After the tournament was over, they were kept just as a visual effect – with different battle background and special icon on campaigns page, but with no triple prestige points being awarded anymore.
Please note that starting with Day 3,083 Full Scale wars become Epics as long as the wall is between 49.5% and 50.5%

Before division changes, damage needed for battle to become epic was like this:
