Whaka is the name of New Zealand's kiwi mascot. He was christened by citizens of New Zealand during the country's first presidential elections as a way of creating community spirit.
Birth of the Kiwi
The motto of the New Zealand community, even before New Zealand came onto the map, was WE ARE ALL KIWIS NOW, a statement of leaving past home countries and prior alliances behind for the sake of creating something new and organic. That statement was put to the test when a faction from Serbia came in the days prior to the first Congressional elections in October 2010; the Serbs and the original community stalemated with nineteen seats apiece, but in a fortunate act of solidarity and diffusion of tension, both sides negotiated for coexistence. While only time will tell, the fact that the pro-Serbian party, the New New Zealand Party, endorsed The New Zealand Union Party candidate Calbe for Prime Minister shows there is some real effort being made, not just pretty words.
It is in this spirit that Arjay Phoenician started a NAME THE KIWI campaign in his newspaper and at the national forum. He started a contest whereby the one who created the name with the highest vote would get five gold. Carr De Vaux was the first to come up with the name Whaka, and at the end of the vote, that name received 24% of the vote, more than the other five candidates.
Whaka is a shortening of whakamānawa, the Maori word for "honor".
