In Sammy Tanghe's term as president in January 2011, Mittekemius served alongside LeValeureuxLiegeois as Minister of Foreign Affairs. She was also elected to serve in the Congress of Belgium on the 25th of the same month. After serving several months in Congress and as a Minister of Foreign Affairs, she took the step to the presidency and became President of Belgium for two consecutive months. After an attempt to get some rest, she decided to move to the United Kingdom and Turkey before eventually coming back to Belgium.
