The New Zealand Liberal Party was an early political party formally active in New Zealand. It was formed by Marcus Cicero and other members of the Provisional Government. It disbanded after its very controversial party elections in October.

History

Many members of the New Zealand Liberal Party (NZLP) were active in the Provisional Government or "Kiwi Kontrol" when it was first formed in September 29, 2011. These members were migrants from various eNations who were moving to NZ when it came onto the map.

The party founder Marcus Cicero was active in the Provisional government as a Minister. Other notable members include Matt Johnson, Snowey and Mattj2. The party was controversially received as its members had originally pledged to remain part of the consensus party, New Zealand Union Party. It was the second party, after the Peace 'n' Prosperity Party to form outside of the NZUP.

Tensions continue to grow between the party and Kiwi Kontrol. Although the Liberals remained dedicated to supporting the NZUP, they disliked the tactics being advocated by Kiwi Kontrol. This came to ahead when Kiwi Kontrol announced they would run an Anti-Takeover (ATO) candidate in the Liberals party elections.

On election day, October 15, Cicero stood against ATO candidate Adasko. Thanks to careful migration of Kiw Kontrol members to the Liberals, Cicero was defeated in a vote of 35 to 19. Subsequently, Adasko dissolved the Liberals to form the Galactic Empire Party and later the Kiwi Social Democrats.

Aftermath

The ATO campaign proved to be one of the most divisive actions taken by Kiwi Kontrol. For many Liberals it was a undemocratic exercise. A good portion refused to remain in the party and migrated to the Kiwi Independent Party.

Some of the more vocal replies came from Matt Johnson who stated "This is without a doubt a PTO. And the so called anti-PTO organization Kiwi Kontrol, obviously controlled by the new 'government' seems to support this.", he said, and continued "Isn't that what you would call ironic?"
