Brand was a member of Congress from Styria region of Austria, the Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs, and a member of the Rot Weiss Rot party.

First entering into political consciousness in April 2009, Brand became a member of the Rot Weiss Rot Party, the dominant party in Austria at the time.
In June 2009, Brand was elected to the Austrian Congress. He has served three terms.
