Austria is a landlocked country in Central Europe. Neighbors are Italy to the west, Hungary and Slovakia to the east, Slovenia to the south, Germany to the northwest and Czech Republic to the north. Though it's lands - with the exception of Hungarian controlled Burgenland - were briefly assimilated by Germany to form Germany-Austria in March 2009, a resistance war led by both PEACE GC and disenchanted Austrians freed territories held by Germany. President Silent Bob decided to hand over most of the newly freed territories to Hungary, Italy, and Slovenia until Austria's population grew. While these territories were later returned peacefully, Hungary's congress was reluctant to return Burgenland, voting down the proposal. However, a resistance war led by elements of PEACE GC, Hungary, and Austria freed Burgenland, and returned it to Austria on September 5th.
A growing nation, Austria has developed into a competitive democracy since its re-emergence in the spring. While there was initially only one party - the Rot Weiss Rot led by Metallon, parties of differing opinions have emerged, including the leftward leaning People's Socialist Party, authoritarian Nationale Partei Oesterreichs, and the Austrian Independence Party which was opposed to PEACE's war in North America. However, only three people have been president since the restoration - Metallon in April, May, and September 2009, Lynari in June, July, and August 2009, and Rangeley in October and November 2009.

The October 25th congressional election gave representation to 5 different parties - Illuminus Austria, National Front Austria, the Austrian Independence Party, People's Socialist Party, and Rot Weiss Rot. It marked the first time the National Front contested the election - with the Party of Austrian Empire falling out of the top five. 134 votes were cast in total. The Illuminus Austria party received the most seats for the fourth straight congressional election.
National Front Austria picked up 10 seats, for second place, while the Austrian Independence Party came in third with 6 seats. The People's Socialist Party recovered from previous setbacks by achieving 5 seats. Though Lynari of the Rot Weiss Rot picked up the most votes of anyone individually - 17 - the party ultimately came in 5th place with only 4 seats.

History of Austria
See also: History of Austria
Austria was formed in December 2007 with the start of the game, and it had only a small population until March 2008. This changed when Slovenians began to move into Austria's regions, especially Salzburg, due to Slovenia not yet existing. They founded the Austrian Socialist party and on April 5th, Emdvojka won the President seat. Starting that month, and continuing into May, large amounts of people from Italy started to move into Austria, forming the Austrian International Movement. There were some fears from Slovenians - then the majority - that the Italians would try to take over Austria, which the new party Alternative Way used as propaganda against them successfully.
On June 10th, Slovenia was formed, so many of Austria's Slovenians left, causing the ATS to drop in value, and hurting the economy. This left a power vacuum, which the Austrian International Movement took advantage of. Mappina won with their backing, and proved a popular leader - serving 3 consecutive terms. Austria built a professional army, wellness program, forums, and joined the Mediterranean Alliance. Later, when PEACE GC was founded in late August, Austria joined this alliance.
Aanok Tourmil followed mappina, becoming president in October 2008. After serving one term, he stepped down, supporting Danny Boodmann T. D. Lemon Nov as his successor in November. However, by this point interest in Austria was declining, with many returning back to Italy. He was the final president to be elected by the Austrian International Movement. After V1 was implemented Aanok Tourmil ran again, this time with the Austrian Liberal Party, and won his second term as president. Though he strove to achieve Austria's first constitution, there was too little momentum behind it and his term ended.
Azoo Lazzo and Chicco
Starting in November 2008, many people from Serbia began to move into the nation. Like Slovenians earlier, they saw the relatively small nation of Austria as a suitable temporary substitute. With the biggest group from the summer of 2008 declining, they filled the vacuum once more. On January 5th, Azoo Lazzo of the Austrian-Serbian Alliance was elected President of Austria with broad support, having earned the trust of most of the previous residents. But after being elected, he disappeared for 10 days without saying a word. Finally re-emerging, he took a vast sum of money from the Austrian treasury to use it as a start-up capital in recently announced Serbia.
Threatening dire consequences should anyone question the move, Austria was thrown into complete turmoil, with its economy once again collapsing. Negotiations with Serbian community leaders were undertaken, and ultimately most Serbians disagreed with the misuse of national funds. With most Serbians leaving for their own nation once it was made, it left another vacuum, out of which emerged Chicco as President of Austria in February 2009.
Believing that Austria was ultimately not a viable nation, being constantly prone to takeovers, Chicco supported the creation of a Germany-Austria.
March presidential elections were the closest yet - with Chicco and a Hungarian, Silent Bob, tying in votes. As Silent Bob held a higher level, he received the presidency.
However, Germany-Austria proved controversial after the union decided to join ATLANTIS. As Austria was a member of PEACE GC, some in Austria began to object to the union, as did many in PEACE GC. Thus, the Austria-PEACE Resistance War began.
Wars of resistance began in the other territories, which proved successful.
