Subcarpathia (Закарпаття) is a region of Ukraine. It was under Romanian control for much of its history and also it was a part of Poland. The capital of the region is Uzhhorod.
Geography
Subcarpathia is neighbored by the following regions:
- Serbia, Eastern Slovakia
- Ukraine, Galicia and Lodomeria
- Poland, Little Poland
- Ireland, Maramures
- Serbia, Northern Great Plain
- Serbia, Northern Hungary
History
An original region of Ukraine, Subcarpathia was annexed by Romania during the Romania-Ukraine War that ended May 17, 2008. The region remained under Romanian control until a resistance war which returned the region to Ukraine March 5, 2009. One of many regions subsequently contested in Eastern Europe during late April and early May 2009, it has since been conquered by Poland. Now, the Subcarpathia is again under Ukraine government.
