Overview
Austria has been a nation in eRepublik since the beginning of eRepublik in November 2007. It was among the first nations to have been established in the newly created eRepublik. Since the beginning of eRepublik, Austria has joined a few alliances, most notably PEACE GC. Although, since the later months of 2009, Austria has taken a neutral stance in global affairs but leans towards Phoenix more often than not.

Involvement in World War III
Prior to the start of World War III in July, it became a topic of contention in the Austrian media. Initially, however, most in Austria remained supportive of the war and the prospect of Austrian involvement. President Lynari ordered troops to participate in several of the early battles in the war, deploying troops to fight in Prince Edward Island, and later in Spain, with Minister of Defense Metallon carrying out the operations. The war effort was boosted by the apperance of the Illuminus Austria - a group of high level fighters strongly supportive of the war.
By August, the first party explicitly opposed to the war had formed in the Austrian Independence Party, led by Travis James. With a large media presence, including critical postings by Rangeley, the party began to gain ground as August drew to a close. A vital test of Austrian sentiments occured in the September Presidential election - as President Lynari had begun to become critical of PEACE's policies himself. Challenging him was his own Minister of Defense, and Predecessor, Metallon, supported by the Illuminus Austria. The election would be narrowly won by Metallon - though notably on his last day as President, Lynari saw Austria re-united for the first time since rebirth, with Burgenland being freed by resistance war.
Under President Metallon, involvement in the war continued, but the media became dramatically more contentious now that the Illuminus Austria and Rot Weiss Rot found themselves at odds. Nykoal, leader of the RWR, led the charge and accused the Illuminus Austria of unethical behavior and of secrecy, while the Vice President of Austria, Jazar, would frequently dismiss the charges as coming from inexperienced players.
With Nykoal and Metallon headed into the October Presidential election, the Austrian Independence Party looked to tread a middle ground and provide an alternative, fielding Rangeley in the race for President. In addition to supporting a change in the political atmosphere, Rangeley continued to oppose involvement in World War Three and vowed to end aggressive operations, as well as try to reform the alliance itself. Nykoal would go on to drop out of the race and endorse Rangeley - and with this additional support, Rangeley won the presidency.
Non-Aggression
Fulfilling his promise, Rangeley's first act was to withdraw the Austrian armed forces from all operations in World War III.
