How to upgrade
If you are the general manager of a company, you can choose to upgrade a company's quality for a certain amount of gold (see 'Cost of Upgrading and Downgrading' below). To upgrade/downgrade companies click the button and then click the button next to the building you want to upgrade/downgrade.
After you've found the "Company upgrade" pop-up, you can choose to either upgrade or downgrade your company by clicking on the button under the desired company level (with each level corresponding to a different product).

Costs of Upgrading and Downgrading
Upgrading and downgrading require gold. Downgrading returns half of the investment originally involved in upgrading it. The table below shows the total amount of gold required to upgrade and the total amount of gold returned with downgrading with the original level on the left column and the desired level on the top row. (Use this table as you would a multiplication table.)
