Map of United Kingdom

Last update January 7th 2012

The United Kingdom (commonly known as the UK, officially the United Kingdom of Great Britain) is a medium sized country in western Europe. With twelve regions bordering seven other nations, the unusually large number of borders makes the UK a key tactical crossroads which is frequently fought over. This is especially true for the ocean crossings between North America, Western Europe and Scandinavia. The UK has a relatively small population and relies on diplomacy and mutual protection pacts for its defence, and although not an overly strong country militarily, it's citizens have often taken leading roles in alliance headquarters. The UK's relatively old community and high-traffic national forums have maintained high activity, strong politics and stable elections throughout it's existence.

History

The UK was originally part of the Icon-ATLANTIS.png ATLANTIS alliance network until its defeat and dissolution in mid 2009. In the aftermath, the UK switched to the opposing Icon-PEACE.png PEACE network after disputes with Icon-Sweden.png Sweden and Icon-USA.png USA. This flipped the UK's tactical status from a safe nation surrounded by strong allies into a new front in wars between major alliances.

Since then the UK has been used as a land bridge to stage attacks on other nations by all alliances, most notably by Icon-Hungary.png Hungary in the PEACE invasion of North America. The very act of switching alliances has also made the UK itself a target of ATLANTIS' successor alliances Icon-EDEN.png EDEN and the Brolliance, with several unsuccessful sieges launched to wipe the country off the map.

The UK joined the PEACE successor alliance, Icon-Phoenix.png Phoenix, at the end of 2009 and exited in early 2011.

In February of 2011 the UK become a member of the Terra alliance from which they subsequently withdraw on the 25th of April after an unsuccessful invasion of Icon-Belgium.png Belgium, claiming that Terra did not support the UK against the Belgians.

Following it's withdrawal from Terra, the UK has grown closer to ONE, the successor alliance to Phoenix. The UK is an official member of ONE, , and has signed MPP with many ONE member nations, such as Icon-Poland.png Poland and Icon-Spain.png Spain.

Due to real-life conflicts and beliefs, the UK is often at odds with it's neighbour to the west, Icon-Ireland.png Ireland. Northern Ireland, an original region of the UK, is frequently a cause for conflict and is often the site of Irish invasions into the UK.

Geography

The UK is unique in linking Scandinavia, Western Europe and North America. With seven neighboring countries and many more only a few regions away, the UK is a key tactical position in wars fought between nations in Europe and North America. This, as well as frequent conflict with Ireland, has often led to volatile borders.

The UK is commonly reduced to one region or in ownership of many foreign regions via region swaps and counter attacks. The most frequent UK conquests tend to be temporary occupation of enemy bordering regions and nations such as Icon-Ireland.png Ireland, although the UK has in the past owned regions as far east as Icon-North Korea.png North Korea.

Like many other countries, the UK community has renamed the generic institutions of eRepublik as far as possible, such as Congress and the President, to assign a cultural flavour to them and an element of uniqueness. The elected members of the UK Congress are commonly called Members of Parliament (MP) and make up the national forum based House of Commons, while the President is commonly referred to as the Prime Minister.

Prime Minister

The President of the United Kingdom is the head of the UK Government, he or she appoints and manages the Ministers who perform the day-to-day administration of the country. The current Prime Minister is Talon Karrde of the The Unity Party.

Parliament

The UK usually has 40 Congress seats, although this can fall during invasions. Each region will typically have three candidates with four wildcards making up the total of 40. As the region of London holds a large proportion of the UK population, most wildcards tend to be selected from London candidates. During the December 2011 term, there was no people in Parliament due to the invasion, which continued through to the March Presidential elections.

As well as voting on in-game proposals, the House of Commons votes on legislation in the eUK Forums. Legislation comprises of proposals written up and enforced entirely by the UK community and are not part of the in-game mechanics, legislation covers such things as constitutional issues, government structure, government procedure and any schemes or projects that might draw significant public funds.

Armed Forces

Main article: British Armed Forces

The United Kingdom has a healthy military and has played a key strategic role in the various conflicts throughout erepublik history. Its armed forces are contained in four main branches, and uphold the long-running traditions of the eUK military. They fall under the command of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defence of the UK military. All branches are deployed to various conflicts throughout the New World, at home or abroad in order to defend the United Kingdom and her allies.

The British Armed Forces currently recruit any citizen able to fight and are willing to travel, regardless of strength or rank. Higher skill players receive higher quality supplies to maximize damage.

Alliances

Recent history has seen a great deal of change. The United Kingdom was once a member of the Flag-ATLANTIS.jpg ATLANTIS alliance but adopted a policy of neutrality following the organization's dissolution, initiating a period characterized by extremely low relations with it's former allies such as the USA and Sweden. As a consequence the UK eventually joined Seal-PEACE.png PEACE Global Community in a memorable episode of political turmoil prior to the PEACE Invasion of North America, a controversial move as PEACE and ATLANTIS were traditionally enemies. The United Kingdom left PEACE in November 2009 after many key allies had also left. The United Kingdom became a member of the Icon-Phoenix.png Phoenix Alliance, the successor of PEACE, on December 06, 2009. On the 24th of February 2011, the United Kingdom left Phoenix and joined 20pxTerra but left on April 25th 2011, due to dissagreements with other member nations mostly over their treatment within the alliance and foreign policy.

After leaving Terra the United Kingdom tried to maintain the Strasbourg Treaty and for a time succeeded. However with the changing political climate and growing ever-closer to ONE nations the treaty became a Non-Agression Pact despite both France and Germany remaining Terra members. It was eventually disolved (neither side will agree on the reasons), and currently the United Kingdom is at war with all of their former Terra allies.

The UK joined ONE in December as a full member nation of the alliance, having been pro-ONE for most of the year.

Tax

The UK tax system encourages maximum productivity in the companies which supply it to lower prices, increase exports and raise tax revenue. Products which the UK can produce at optimal productivity have a low local tax and high import tax, while products which the UK cannot produce with high productivity have a high local tax and low import tax.

Trade

The United Kingdom occasionally blocks trade with enemy nations. Due to poor diplomatic relations, frequent targets include Icon-Ireland.png Ireland and Icon-USA.png USA. In June 2011, Greece and Croatia were both embargoed by Jamesw, following their support of Ireland during the UK's invasion.

The Monarchy

Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
Emblem of King Woldy - the reigning Monarch

The United Kingdom officially became a "Kingdom" on September the 18th 2009 when the Monarchy Act was passed by both Houses of Parliament. The Act established Stephen John Fry as the first "Monarch" of the United Kingdom, a position holding absolute legislative and executive authority. However, this power is exercised by the Prime Minister and Parliament who govern as representatives on his behalf.

The eUK has so far been presided over by five Monarchs, the most recent and longest serving ruler is His Britannic Majesty, King Woldy I of the electronic United Kingdom, whom ascended the throne on October 14th, 2010. He passed away on March 6th, 2012, ending his 18 month reign.

On March 6th, a Revolution began between two warring factions in the United Kingdom. The Red Team, headed by Lily Jayne Summers was the principle head against the Blue Team headed by ApronChef, to decide who will be the next monarch of the United Kingdom. This war is still on going, but a date has been set by the Government, acting as a mediator between the two, to decide the next monarch by the 1st of April.

Houses of Parliament

The Palace of Westminster, also known as the Houses of Parliament or Westminster Palace, is the meeting place of the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom—the House of Lords and the House of Commons. It lies on the north bank of the River Thames in the heart of the London borough of the City of Westminster, close to the historic Westminster Abbey and the government buildings of Whitehall and Downing Street. The palace has status as a royal residence for ceremonial purposes.

The House of Lords

The Palace is one of the centres of political life in the United Kingdom; "Westminster" has become a metonym for the UK Parliament, and the Westminster system of government has taken its name after it. The Clock Tower's fame has surpassed that of the Palace itself. The structure known as "Big Ben", the heaviest of the five bells it houses, is an iconic landmark of London and the United Kingdom in general, one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city and an emblem of parliamentary democracy.

The King Stephen I Art Gallery

The King Stephen I National Gallery is open to everyone and has the intention of displaying and celebrating some of the best artwork the eUK has ever produced. Inside you will find artwork ranging from avatars to political campaigns all with one thing in common: they were designed by eUK citizens for eUK citizens. This is the first organization of its type in the New World and if it meets success, more may follow!

It was founded by King Stephen I the First of the United Kingdom, and planned by Asher Di Immortales, under Minister of Home Affairs and Congressman.
